antipsychotic (항전신병약, 정신병 치료제, 항정신병의) 정신병 치료에 유효한 것. 항정신병
약물(neuroleptic drugs 및 major tranquilizers 라고도 부른다)은 화학적으로는 다양하여,
phenothiazines, thioxanthenes, butyrophenones, dibenzoxazepines, dibenzodiazepines,
diphenylbutylpiperidines 등이 여기에 속한다. 약리학적으로는 다음과 같은 정신병의 치료에
사용하는 비슷한 계열의 약물이다. 즉 정신분열증, 파라노이드, 분열정동형 정신병 및 기타
정신적 장애 등의 치료에 사용한다. 항정신병 약물은 도파민성, 히스타민성, 콜린성, 알파 아
드레날린성, 세로토닌성 수용체와 결합한다. 이들 약물의 주요 효과는 여러 부위에서 도파민
성 전달을 차단함으로써 나타날 것이라고 생각되고 있다. 즉, 항정신병 작용은 mesolimbic
및 mesocortical 부위에서, 추체외로 부작용은 기저핵 부위에서, 항구토 효과는 연수의 화학
수용체 발동대 부위에서 도파민 수용체 차단에 의한다고 한다. 기타 각종 부작용(혈압하강,
시력장애, 입안건조증, 코출혈, 변비 등)은 자율신경성 수용체의 차단에 의하여 일어난다.
