corridor while a foreigner, whom he considers aggressive, tries to
catch up with him," writes an anthropologist.

Robin Fox points out that "any human group is ever ready to consign another recognizably different human group to the other side of the boundary.
It is not enough to possess culture to be fully human, you have to possess our culture."

Although the error of this way of thinking about culture amy seem self-evident today, it is a lesson that anthropologists and the missionaries who often preceded them to remote areas learned the hard way, by observing the effects their best intentions had on people whose way of life was quite different from their own.
물론 문화에 대해 이렇게 생각하는 방법이 실수라는 것은 오늘날 자명하지만, 멀리 떨어진 지역에서 훨씬 문명이 앞서 있는 인류학자나 선교사들이 선의로 베풀었던 것이, 삶의 방식이 그들과 다른 사람들에게 미치는 영향을 살핌으로써 그것이(다른 문화에 그들의 선진문화를 전파하고 동화시키는 것이) 힘들다는 것을 깨달았다는 것은 교훈이라 할 만하다.
