(ANS) Many nations have harvest festivals and Thanksgiving days, while many other cultures observe the veneration of ancestors, but no one has anything quite like the Korean Chusok. Historians tell us that the Chusok festival originated during the reign of the third king of the Silla Kingdom nearly 2,000 years ago. Chusok involves many things. It is an offering of thanks to heaven for the harvest, an appeal for the good fortune of another harvest in the next year, and an offering of sacrifices to one's family ancestors for all they did for the clan and family. In addition, of course, there are family gathering, much hearty eating, and such activities as the circle dance in the light of the full harvest moon.

[比較] refuse, waste, rubbish, trash, garbage
a stream polluted by refuse from a manufacturing plant/ heaps of refuse left by the former tenant

Throw it in the rubbish barrel
In its center stood the abandoned capitol building. Its steps were littered with trash.

The sizes and shapes of coins are different in various countries, and the size and color of paper money vary.
In the United states, for example, all paper money is the same size and the same color;
only the printing on the bills is different.

Conflict arises whenever your needs interfere with those of other people.
Since everyone's needs are different, conflict is a natural and healthy part of all human relationships.
This lesson shows you how to resolve conflicts in a way that is both effective and satisfying.
Gaining skill in resolving conflicts positively reduces the anxiety associated with conflicts and produces more enjoyable relationships.

Some young children were talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up.
Jimmy said he wanted to be a *philanthropist.
When the other kids asked him to explain, he replied, “I heard they're the guys who have all the money.”
Jimmy was only partially right.
According to the dictionary, a philanthropist is “one who loves and seeks to benefit mankind.”
Simply having a lot of money, then, doesn't make one a philanthropist.
In fact, a poor person who “loves and seeks to benefit mankind” out of his limited resources
is more of a philanthropist than a person of great wealth who is a miser.

Our parents always made sure that we understood how important our relationships to each other were.
We were taught to love and respect our siblings because they were the only people that we would always be able to count on.
From a very early age, we learned to share what we had with each other.
Later, we learned to support each other through hard times at school or around the neighborhood.
The long-term result of this is that we are all very close today.

How do birds know when to fly south?
Some people think it's cool weather that tells them to leave.
But other don't believe this is true.
They think the birds start to migrate when the fall days grow shorter.
Some birds migrate only short distances.
Others fly thousands of miles.
And the birds don't get lost at all!

On Valentine's Day, Tom asked me to have dinner with him.
He insisted that my two daughters, aged 9 and 11, be at home when he picked me up.
When arriving, he asked us to sit on the couch.
From his pocket, he took three small boxes.
One contained a diamond engagement ring.
Each of the other two contained a heart-shaped ring with a tiny diamond in the center.
He proposed to all three of us and, needless to say, I didn't have a chance.
The four of us have been married now for three and a half years.

One of the most powerful kinds of storms is the hurricane.
Each year hurricanes injure more people and damage more property than any other kind of storm.
The winds lion hurricanes can reach speeds of up to 200 miles per hour.
Rail often pours down in solid sheets, causing floods and water damage.
These dreaded storms pack so much that the energy from just one day of a hurricane
could supply electricity to all of the United States for several years!

Our experience of life comes through our five senses.
Each sense gives us specific and useful information about our physical world.
Imagine for a moment that you didn't have the sense of smell.
How much less rich your world would be.
In our traditional work culture we act as if we have only one sense, either visual or auditory.
Most of us are trained to use one of these two senses as our dominant sense, to the exclusion of our other senses.
Learning to use all your senses is a good way to enrich every moment of your life.

A mother wanted to teach her daughter a lesson on money.
So she gave her little daughter a quarter and a dollar for the church,
"Put whichever one you want in the collection basket and keep the other for yourself," she told the girl.
When they were coming out of church, the mother asked her daughter which amount she had given.
"Well," said the little girl, "I was going to give the dollar, but just before the collection,
the priest said that we should all be cheerful givers.
I knew I'd be a lot more cheerful if I gave the quarter, so I did.

In schools, we all learned that dinosaurs were slow and cold-blooded reptiles.
However, the opposite may be true.
New scientific evidence shows dinosaurs might have been warm-blooded animals that behaved more like mammals than reptiles.
Such a conclusion can be drawn from the following two facts.
One is the growth patterns of dinosaurs, which are more like those of warm-blooded mammals.
The other is that their body temperatures had to be higher than the air to hatch eggs.

In mystery books and movies, fingerprints play a big role.
The police get them from a gun left by the thief.
Then, soon the thief is in jail.
But in real life, the police rarely get prints from guns.
First of all, a smart thief won't leave his gun where it can be found.
And, even if he did, the gun doesn't leave good prints.
That is because it is usually oily.
Finally, anyone who fires a gun holds it tightly.
That also blurs the prints.
So real-life detectives have to find other kinds of clues.

The giant panda bear is a favorite of children and animal lovers throughout the world.
Though so well known and loved, the panda is slowly dying out.
At present, there are only about 1,230 wild pandas left in the world.
They all live in China.
Pandas used to be common in other areas.
However, as the human population increased and the forests shrank, panda territory gradually disappeared.
And so did tile panda.
Now the Chinese government has created a number of “panda reserves” to protect pandas.
Within these reserves, human settlement and tree cutting will be limited.

Good jugglers make juggling look so easy that it is difficult to imagine all the physics that comes into play.
Gravity has a significant effect on the number of objects juggled.
Each ball must be thrown high enough to allow the juggler time to handle the other balls.
While throwing higher gives the juggler extra time, it also increases the risk of error.
Juggling low, on the other hand, requires the juggler to catch and throw quickly, also increasing the risk of error.
The need for speed or height will change dramatically as the number of objects being juggled increases.

But is it all good news? Not always.
They don't operate well when the battery is low.
When a communications satellite failed in 1998, some users lost their phone service.
They are also dangerous to use when you drive.
More and more car accidents happen while people are talking on their cell phones.
In addition, cell phone conversations are not private.
Some people can listen in to other people's conversations when they are talking on their cell phones.

Sociologists have noticed several things about young people today.
First, they like to hang out in malls, at coffeehouses, and in parks.
They seem to enjoy being with their friends in large open places.
Second, these young people seem to expect special treatment like not having to follow the rules.
They can also work quickly with their hands on things like computers and other electronic tools.
Fifty or sixty years ago, teenagers all wore white sailor hats.
Now something else is trendy: sports clothing.
There is, in fact, a boom in sales of sports clothes.

Restaurants require their cooks to handle food carefully to make sure that it stays fresh.
First of all, the cook must keep the kitchen clean so that no dust or dirty water comes into contact with the food.
He must keep in the refrigerator all food which can go bad.
Uncooked meat, for example, should be frozen or kept in the refrigerator in a covered bowl.
Milk, juice, and other drinks should be kept in closed bottles and kept cool.

All of the goals of space science share a common end.
It is to learn more about the earth.
Only by exploring other bodies in the skies can we answer some of the questions we have about the earth.
The things we have learned about other planets have helped us to know our own planet better.
It is important to understand the forces that control the earth.
With that understanding we may be able to manage those forces.
This control would help mankind.

The arctic tern is an extraordinary bird that makes difficult journeys.
It flies up to 35,000 kilometers every year―all around the world from the North Pole to the South Pole and back again!
That's more than any other animal.
Arctic terns fly through all types of weather, using the sun and stars to help them.
They spend almost all of their life in the air.
When they need food, they catch fish from the sea.
Some arctic terns live thirty years or more―so they travel over one million kilometers in their lifetime.
The bird is only thirty-eight centimeters long and weighs around 300 grams.

The first thing the English teacher did was to pass around a tea bag.
She said, “I was making my usual cup of tea this morning, and I found this strange tea bag.
It smells of tea, and it looks the same as all the other tea bags in the box, but there is nothing inside it.
I'd like you to write something, using this as a metaphor.”
We got into it right away and came up with some really cool ideas.
The teacher said tea bags bring good luck, so she hung this one above her desk.

Sue : Important social skills can be achieved through other activities, such as charity work for old people, instead of sports classes.
When something is forced, the benefits it may bring are destroyed.
After all, you can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
Taking part in a sports class should therefore be a matter of free choice for the students, although encouraged by the school.

We are all very glad that the new train line has opened to take people to Euro-Disney.
However, I must report that the trains are very crowded and uncomfortable.
This is especially true at the busiest times when many people are trying to get to work.
In order to attract more visitors to the park, we must put more trains in service during peak hours.
There are also many tourists who do not speak French; therefore, we need train employees who speak English and other languages.
If we do this, I'm sure more visitors will come to Euro-Disney in comfort and safety.

When you're having a conversation with someone and he is angry, listen patiently.
Once you get impatient and start arguing, your position hardens, the other person's position hardens, and it becomes impossible to find a mutually agreeable solution to the issues being discussed.
So if you don't want to get into an argument, stay calm and say nothing, though you'll certainly be tempted to interrupt and respond to the person's statements.
Within a few minutes the person will use up all of his anger and energy and talk himself out.
Now that he has calmed down, you can have an intelligent conversation.

He looked up and saw, on the bridge over his head, an overturned truck.
The truck had smashed into another truck.
The accident was so bad that all of the money the truck was carrying spilled into the road.
The wind was blowing hard, so the bills were floating all over.
He saw people running from everywhere.
They were shouting to each other to hurry up.
They were gathering money and putting it in purses and bags.
He had never seen people working so quickly.

What would my life be like if my children didn't play sports? Well, it may be more relaxed on one hand.
However, like other parents, I can see the immense benefits sports provide our children!
Organized sports offer children of all ages the chance to exercise, to be part of a team, and to form relationships they may not otherwise have.
Working out not only helps to lessen depression, it also helps teenagers overcome the uneasiness they may feel at times as they develop and change.
And being on a sports team can be helpful and stabilizing at a time when so many things in their lives seem devastating.
And sharing in both its accomplishments and failures is a wonderful experience.

The first year of my college was terrible for me.
I didn't know how to handle myself.
I had a growing fear that I might flunk out.
The turnaround came one day during my second semester, on a day when my English professor was returning some essay papers to the class.
She held mine up, and I could see all the red marks and comments she had put on it.
I thought, “Oh, what is she going to do? Criticize my work in front of all these other students?”
Instead, she said, “Your grammar and spelling need a lot of work, Arthur, but this is an example of a very well-organized paper.”
Surely she had no idea what she had done for me.
She had blessed me with an affirmation.
She had shown me I could do something.

Go to any vacant lot and look around.
Under the “no dumping” signs you will find old tires, rusting sinks, junked refrigerators, and other trash.
There are also laws about the care of dogs, but some dog-owners seem to be ignorant of them.
They let their dogs run loose and do not clean up after them.
Perhaps the most disregarded of all laws are our traffic regulations.
More and more drivers are speeding, going through red lights, and double parking on the road.
And some drivers, apparently not even worrying about being fined,
have been parking in spaces clearly marked as reserved for the physically challenged.
These are some examples that show a lack of respect for the law.

A movie set is the area where a motion picture is filmed.
Most sets are built inside movie studios.
These sets are built in large, windowless buildings, called “sound stages.”
Here, both the picture and the dialogue are recorded.
Indoor sets on sound stages are convenient because all the necessary cameras, sound equipment, and wiring can be permanently installed.
At other times, however, a movie set is built “on location,” which means o

Dr. Ward, a famous paleontologist specializing in mass extinction, says:
“We have finally said out loud what we have thought for so long.
Life, at least complex life, is rare in the universe.”
His colleague Dr. Brownlee comments:
“People say the sun is a typical star, but that's not true.
Almost all other environments in the universe are terrible for life.
It's only in the Garden-of-Eden like Earth that it can exist.”

How do other people's reactions affect you?
In almost all cases, we are affected in some way by how others respond to us.
From the workplace, to home, to school we interact with others.
We respond to them and they to us.
If a little boy likes to play dolls with his sister,
his parents' responses to his play will affect his belief about what is appropriate male behavior.
His future reactions to dolls, even perhaps to real babies, will be affected by the responses of these important others in his life.
Thus, our behavior, our ideas and our emotions are shaped through such interactions with other people.

Hundreds of celebrities fail to make a favorable impression because they don't listen attentively.
They are so much concerned with what they are going to say next that they do not keep their ears open.
Very important people have said that they prefer good listeners to good talkers,
but the ability to listen seems rarer than almost any other good trait.
And not only important people strongly desire a good listener, but ordinary folks do, too.
As the Reader's Digest once said: “Many persons call a doctor when all they want is an audience.”
Reader's Digest

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

On the other hand, happy people derive deeper satisfaction from their connection with one another rather than the comforts of money.
For Leo and Shirley Smith, their most valued possessions are photo albums that show 52 years of family history.
Mr. Smith says, “They're a record of who we are and where we came from―the separation of war, my successful business,
two daughters' happy marriage, a son's birth defect and Shirley's cancer.”
Now the albums remind the Smiths that through thick and thin they managed to laugh, to enjoy life and,
most of all, to find happiness in each other.

Most of the middle-school texts are full of sidebars, boxes, and other presumably eye-catching special features bearing such titles as
“Flex Your Brain!”, “EXPLORE!”, “Find Out!”, and “Minds On!”
The claim is often made that with today's generation of television-reared children, books need to offer all sorts of bright, short, attention-getting features.
But several studies show the opposite: Some children try to read through a whole page from top to bottom as if it were a “traditional” text and become confused by the sudden jumps into sidebar material and captions.
Others look at the picture captions but never read the text.
Still others read the text but never read the feature titles.

Signs of globalization are everywhere.
From the foreign cars we drive to the foreign food we eat.
Today, the products we buy come from all over the world.
The capital investment that creates these products flows from one country to another with such ease as has never before been seen.
And with these products, came new cultural ideas.
Baseball, Americans' favorite sport, was being challenged by a global import, football, what Americans call soccer.
On the other hand, America influences other countries as well.

The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years.
Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do rape and other violent attacks.

Reading a book is a kind of conversation.
You may think that it is not, because the author does all of the talking, and you have nothing to say; but if you think that, you do not realize your duty as a reader―and you are not using your opportunities.
Actually, the reader is the one who has the last word.
The author has said what he wanted to say, and then it is the reader's turn.
The conversation, however, should be an orderly one, with first one talking and then the other.

"Talking" birds such as parrots are capable of faithfully reproducing words and phrases of human language that they have heard; but when a parrot says "Polly wants a cracker," she may really want a ham sandwich or a drink of water or nothing at all.
A bird that has learned to say "hello" or "goodbye" is as likely to use one as the other, regardless of whether people are arriving or departing.
The bird's utterances carry no meaning.
They are speaking neither English nor their own language when they sound like us.

Society is commonly too cheap.

We have had to agree on a certain set of rules, called etiquette and politeness, to make this frequent meeting tolerable and that we need not come to open war.

The fact is that the less developed countries(LDCs) should not have to be producing primarily for developed country markets.
In the first place, they could trade more with each other, and be less dependent on developed countries for trade.
The LDCs have within themselves all that is required for growth.
They have surpluses of fuel and of the principal minerals.
They have enough land to feed themselves, if they cultivate it properly.
They are capable of learning the skills of manufacturing, and of saving the capital required for modernization.
Their development does not in the long run depend on the existence of the developed countries, and their potential for growth would be unaffected even if all the developed countries were to sink under the sea.

In other words, by expecting these things to deliver lasting delight, we are setting ourselves up for a fall.

All of our expectations have been dashed.
Maybe we need a new job? And the cycle continues.

"We say that the universe is expanding."
"What makes it do that?"
"Most astronomers agree that the expanding universe can only have one explanation: Once upon a time, about 15 billion years ago, all substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small area.
The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot.
Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded.
We call this explosion the Big Bang."
"Just the thought of it makes me shudder."
"The Big Bang caused all the substance in the universe to be expelled in all directions, and as it gradually cooled, it formed stars and galaxies and moons and planets..."
"But I thought you said the universe was still expanding?"
"Yes I did, and it's expanding precisely because of this explosion billions of years ago.
The universe has no timeless geography.
The universe is a happening.
The universe is an explosion.
Galaxies continue to fly through the universe away from each other at colossal speeds."
