1) 진실로: really; from the bottom of one's heart
2) 희망하다: hope [or wish] for; aspire after
We should make up some counterplan for it.
It is necessary for us to work out a new countermeasure.

실현되지 못하고 만 '소망'이나 '의도'는 hoped(intended, wanted)+to have+p.p로도 나타낸다. ex) 그는 당신을 만나기를 바랬었어요(끝내 만나지 못했다는 뜻으로): He had hoped to see you.=He hoped to have seen you.
I had given weekly lectures.
I had my own personal reason.
(ANS) Last April I intended to go to Chunchon, but the trip did not materialize after all. I had wanted to visit the Sacred Heart Women's College in that city, where I had given weekly lectures one fall semester. The weekly trip to Chunchon was tiring, but I had taken the job out of courtesy, because I could not decline the honor when Sisters Choo and Kim had taken the trouble to come to see me. Besides I had my own personal reason.

[比較] sure, certain, confident, positive
I am sure(certain) that he is honest./ He is sure(certain) to lose./ I felt for time sure of his innocence; I am now certain of his guilt.
There is no certain cure for his disease.와 The soldier faced certain death. 그러나 대개 A certain person phoned.와 He had a certain charm.
He's confident he'll win./ We are confident of success./ He feels confident of passing(confident that he will pass) the examination.
Are you positive it was after midnight?/ He's too positive in his beliefs./ As I can't be certain, I won't be positive.(확실하지 않아서 단언하지 않으련다.) ~21

That's THE LAST STRAW.
☞ the last straw - the final thing after a series of bad things the thing that
finally makes you angry

* take a pick : "골라잡다"
A : The wage per hour is $7.
B : It's time and a half after 5 until midnight, and midnight to 8 o'clock in the morning it's double time.
You can take (have) a pick.

A: (After sneezing) Excuse me.
B: Bless you.
A: Thank you.

You look like(take after/ resemble) your father.
-
You are a dead ringer(a carbon copy/ a double of) for your father. /
You are a chip off the old block.

Is the money good?
Do you make good money?
make money라 한다.

What do you do to unwind?
What do you do for relaxation after a hard day's work?

"Do you believe in resurrection?" the boss asked one of
his younger employees.
"Yes, sir."
"Well, then, that makes everything just fine," the boss went on.
" About an hour after you left yesterday to go to your grandfather's
funeral, he stopped in to see you."

After you, please.

``We have studied Japanese cases, and found that most of the
convicts with life sentences are eligible for parole after
serving the first 10 years. You would find it hard to come across
a case where a convict serves beyond 25 years,'' Lee said.

The principal of a school I was working for at the YMCA said,
you know, "I need a substitute teacher, will you come and do this job?" And I said, "Sure."
And then after I got in the class she said, "Oh, by the way, it's a classroom for children with autism."

The "Measure of a Man" had a lot of stuff about heartbreak, and breaking up with someone, you know, being angst after being... lost love.
Not something that I necessarily know too much about.
So, I'd love to have that... something a little bit more positive and upbeat on the next album.

S1 : Excuse me....uh.
T : Why are you late? We started ten minutes ago.
S1 : I'm sorry. I took the wrong bus.
S2 : Another excuse?
T : What will you say the next time you are late?
S3 : Probably that I was stuck in a traffic jam.
T : That's enough. Here's your detention slip. I'll see you after school.

But this is the result. I'm disappointed at myself.
S1 : Cheer up, Chul-su ! Pull yourself together. Be positive.
There are sunny days ahead. Don't worry about it. After the rain comes fair weather.
Forget it. You have another chance next time. You will get good grades.

T : We are going to study some new words that we shall need for the reading passage. Listen and repeat after me.
S1 : Mr. Kim, would you pronounce the third word again?
T : OK, listen again and repeat. Now, read the whole passage and guess the meanings of the new words. Do not use a dictionary.
(after a while)
T : If you are finished, here are some groups of words. Write the topic word for each group.
S2 : I wrote down 'some ways to get better grades' as the topic for this group of words. How about you?
S1 : Mine is similar. I wrote down 'how to study' as the topic.

S1 : Mr. Kim, this is math class.
T : I know. After second period, I have to go on an official trip. Because of this, English class and math class are being switched with each other. Do you understand?

T : First period and third period are being switched around.
S2 : Mr. Kim, can you speak a little louder?

T : What's wrong with S1? Why is he lying on his face?
S2 : He's not feeling well. He has caught a bad cold. He has been sick for two days.
T : Oh! That's too bad. You should be careful about your health, especially during the winter.
S1 : (Standing up) Mr. Shin, may I go to the infirmary to take medicine and rest for a while? I have a fever and a bad headache. I can't stand it any longer.
T : Of course you may go. And after school, you'd better go see a doctor.

(In the infirmary)

S1 : I'm going to Cheju-do for a week.

Mr. Kim and a flight attendant spent about fifteen minutes filling everything out together.
Mr. Kim finally handed in the forms.
After half an hour wait, the supervisor called him over and said,
“Unclaimed luggage usually comes in on the conveyor belt on your right,
but since it was broken today, all luggage is coming in downstairs at gate 5.
You can go down now; your bags are there.”
Mr. Kim thanked the supervisor, went downstairs, and finally got his luggage.

Mr. Kim

Water is the best drink when you are thirsty.
It is absorbed by the body more quickly than a drink with a lot of sugar in it, such as soda.
Within 15 minutes of drinking a glass of water, most of it has already left the stomach.
It is flowing to other parts of the body, helping to cool and clean them.
A soda, on the other hand, is still sitting in the stomach 15 minutes after drinking.
Sodas that have caffeine in them actually take water from the body.
So do other drinks with caffeine, such as coffee and tea.

It is well known that doing a service for other persons benefits the giver as much as the receiver.
When you do a good deed for someone else, you become a better person.
The positive effect that your good deed has upon you lasts long after it is forgotten by the recipient.
Good deeds need not be large.
The greatest gifts are gifts of your time and yourself.
A kind word or small courtesy will be remembered and appreciated.

After he stopped boxing, Muhammad Ali became a good magician and frequently entertained guests with his tricks.
He often explained the secret behind each trick.
“Never do a trick twice,” he once said.
“And never show the audience how you do it.”
“I don't get it, champ,” one of his friends said.
“If that's the case, then why did you show them?”
“To prove to them how easy they can be tricked!” Ali replied.

It's not so crazy to eat nuts after all.
The US Food and Drug Administration recently affirmed that eating just a handful of nuts per day may reduce the risk of heart disease.
Sure, they're fatty, but the fat is primarily the good kind, and nuts fill you up,
since they're high in fiber and protein.
Studies show they may even help prevent cancer.
So grab a handful as a snack, put some in yogurt or work them into your meals.

It's a common scenario.
You are sitting on an airplane in economy class
and another passenger seated very close to you coughs and sneezes continually throughout the flight.
You arrive at your destination and within a couple of days, you come down with a cold, the flu or worse.
Don't be surprised.
It is reported that one in five passengers gets a cold after being on an airplane.
What's a person to do?
Experts suggest a number of measures you can take.
These range from washing your hands to bringing along your own pillow.
You should also be careful not to touch your nose, mouth and eyes.

One day, a poor man named Scott, came to visit Taylor.
He said, “Taylor, I need your help. I am a poor man, a man with no money.”
Taylor looked at him kindly and answered, “I'll help you. Tell me what's wrong.”
Scott said, “Yesterday I stopped in front of the door of a restaurant.
The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.
However, he wanted me to pay him for the food.
And he called the judge.
The judge said I must go to the court today.
Please Taylor, can you help me?”
In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.
Taylor

If you get a blow-out while you are driving, you should know what to do.
A blow-out is a sudden flat tire.
It can be a very frightening experience, especially if you are traveling at high speeds.
If your car gets a blow out, the first thing to do is to hold very tightly to the steering wheel.
You can easily lose control of the car if you do not have a good hold of the steering wheel.
The next step is to get off the road.
However, you must not try to stop or turn too quickly.
After you check the traffic, you should move over to the side of the road and slow down gradually.
Then you should turn on your flashing lights so other cars can see you.

Yesterday I ate lunch at your restaurant, which you advertised as “a dining paradise.”
It was so completely packed with people that the line snaked out the door, and by the time I reached the counter, I was exhausted.
I decided on the hamburger steak special and side dishes, but there was no potato salad left and the beans were burnt more than baked.
At the table, the truck driver sitting across from me wouldn't stop talking about highway taxes.
Finally, when I rose to leave, the waiter “kindly” yelled at me to clean up after myself.
Throwing away that plate of food was the most enjoyable part of dining at your restaurant.

Sue : Important social skills can be achieved through other activities, such as charity work for old people, instead of sports classes.
When something is forced, the benefits it may bring are destroyed.
After all, you can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
Taking part in a sports class should therefore be a matter of free choice for the students, although encouraged by the school.

I know that my apple trees bend over the fence and seem to look down at your children with interest.
And I also know that it is only natural that your children should return that interest by picking the apples that hang over your side of the fence.
But, to be plain with you, I am tired of seeing your children, day after day, tear the branches off the side of every one of my apple trees, and leave my trees looking as though a battle had been fought on one side of them.
I am even more tired of waking these fine autumn mornings to find even the apples on my side of the fence much decreased in number.

While an email address may be complicated to remember at first, it's actually very simple when you break it down.
There are three elements to an email address.
The first is the username.
This is the name that identifies the user of the email.
The part of the email address after the @ symbol is called the domain name.
It tells you who is providing the email service.
The last part after the dot is the extension.
It's a three-letter code that tells you something about the type of email service the user has.

make up
1. to prepare or arrange something: Could you make up a list of all the things we need?
2. to form as a whole: Farming and mining make up most of the country's industry.
3. to become friendly with someone again after an argument: Why don’t you two forget your differences and make up?

When you observe the night sky with a telescope, you must be patient.
If at first you don't see anything where a star cluster or nebula is supposed to be, keep looking.
Then look some more.
You'll be surprised at how much more of the scene comes into view with prolonged scrutiny: faint little stars here and there, and just possibly the object of your desire.
After you see your object once or twice, you'll see it more and more often.
After a few minutes you may be able to see it nearly continuously where at first you thought there was nothing but blank sky.

Conversation can be on two levels―the content one and the feeling one.
For example, yesterday my friend Scott came over and told me what Ann had done to him.
I started to tell him why I thought Ann acted that way and Scott got angry and started fighting with me.
After he left, I realized that he didn't really want me to explain why Ann was that way,
but he wanted someone to understand his feelings because no matter why Ann did it, she really hurt him.
I probably should have said something like, “She really made you mad, didn't she?” and waited until the next day to talk about it.

Go to any vacant lot and look around.
Under the “no dumping” signs you will find old tires, rusting sinks, junked refrigerators, and other trash.
There are also laws about the care of dogs, but some dog-owners seem to be ignorant of them.
They let their dogs run loose and do not clean up after them.
Perhaps the most disregarded of all laws are our traffic regulations.
More and more drivers are speeding, going through red lights, and double parking on the road.
And some drivers, apparently not even worrying about being fined,
have been parking in spaces clearly marked as reserved for the physically challenged.
These are some examples that show a lack of respect for the law.

It was a very hot day in the middle of summer, and there were no trees along the street.
Mr. Read closed his shop at half past five, and went out into the street and began walking to the bus stop.
He was very fat.
The sun shone straight down the street, and in a few minutes Mr. Read felt very hot.
A little girl came out of another shop.
The girl stayed very near him all the time, and she kicked Mr. Read's shoes several times.
Mr. Read looked at her angrily each time.
After the fourth time, Mr. Read stopped, turned round and said to the little girl,
“What are you doing? Stop following me like that!”
“I'm sorry, but don't stop me, please!” the little girl said.
“It's very hot today, and there isn't any shade anywhere else in the street!”

It takes time and effort to change the way you think and act.
Consider the way you brush your teeth.
This is a simple habit pattern.
But a considerable amount of effort is required to change it.
Before beginning to brush, you would have to remind yourself about the new method you plan to use.
While brushing, your mind would wander and you would catch yourself returning to your old method.
After a second reminder you would start using the new method only to forget and have to catch yourself again.
And so it would go until enough time and energy had been spent to make the new method as automatic as the old method was.
