1) ~와 거리가 멀다: know nothing about ~; be a complete stranger
It may [or can] safely be said that ~ ; We can safely say that ~
3) 그저 시간 죽이기: a mere means of killing time; only for an idle hour
They took it for granted that I would attend the reception.
He always assumes that his friends are interested in what he is doing.
There is a man who always thinks that money is to be borrowed (from others).
ANS 1) It may safely be said that those who assume that books are to be read by borrowing know nothing about the true joy of reading. These people think of reading as a mere means of killing time.
ANS 2) It is not too much to say that a man who takes it for granted that reading books is borrowing them of others does not know anything about the true joy from reading. Such a man thinks reading is nothing but a mere means of killing time.

1) 진실로: really; from the bottom of one's heart
2) 희망하다: hope [or wish] for; aspire after
We should make up some counterplan for it.
It is necessary for us to work out a new countermeasure.
It is necessary for us to take measures to deal with [or meet] a new situation.
He lost no time in taking measures for its reduction.
I will take steps to see that your application is processed.
We should consider the counterplan for our collective security.
ANS 1) If you really want peace, it is no use merely hoping for it. You must study about war and take necessary steps to prevent war.
ANS 2) If you aspire after peace from the bottom of your heart, it is of no use just to wish for it. You must have more informations about war and take all the necessary precautions against it.

Everybody would like to make a trip to some distant stars in the space as well as into the future and past.
But we know that we could not make such a trip by means of an ordinary vehicle.
It would take thousands of years to reach the nearest star ever at the speed of millions of immensity of the space by all means.
That is to say, we must dash through the space by means of some mysterious method of transportation.
But, to achieve this exploit we should know much more than we do now about space and time.
Do we really know what space is? Probably the answer is "No". It is fortunate, however, that we can now control the space.

→ 어떻게 부르면 좋을지 망설이다: have a hard time deciding what to call the occasion
→ …라고 부르는 것도 알맞지 않다: nor is it properly called~
Chusok deeply rooted in the culture of Korea; Chusok with a special importance; have a remarkable significance
(ANS) Because there are so many levels of meaning to Chusok, foreigners often have a hard time deciding what to call the occasion. It is not the same as Thanksgiving celebrations, though it includes the thanks for the harvest and the family gathering and eating. Nor is Chusok properly called an autumn moon festival, for the more important meaning to Koreans is to be found in the veneration of the family ancestors. Probably the most important thing about Chusok today is its very Koreanness. At a time when the people of this country are deeply concerned to discover and affirm their true national identity, events with a long history in the culture of Korea a special importance.

While world population growth has, in general, slowed down…
→ 년간 1.9%의 성장을 이룩하다: grow at 1.9 percent a year
으로: largely because of~
→ 국제원조의 삭감: the cutback in international aid
→ 「인구증가율은 2.02% 였다」: The population grew at…
→ 1% 상승한 데 불과하다: rose by only one percent a year
(ANS) Despite an overall slowdown in world population growth, the populations of many developing countries are continuing to grow at high rate. Between 1980 and 1982 the economies of the developing countries grew at only 1.9 percent a year, largely because of the economic recession and the cutback in international aid. At the same time their populations grew at 2.02 percent. But per capita income in the poorest nations rose by only about one percent a year between 1960 and 1981. At present per capita income of the richest country is 220 times the per capita income of the poorest country. The gap between the developing and developed countries will widen still further.

(ANS) Last Sunday an old friend of mine, whom I had not seen for a long time, came to see me, and we had a good talk for some five hours.
※ Some five hours「약 5시간」에서, some은 about와 같다.

→ 아무리 화가 났어도: no matter how angry you were; no matter how much you were offended라는 양보 표현이 있다.
→ no matter how는 however로 대치할 수 있는데, 이들 뒤에는 반드시 형용사나 부사가 온다.
→ ~와 말다툼을 한다: quarrel with~; have a quarrel with~.
→ ~하지 않았어야 했다: should not have+과거분사, 또, ought not to have+과거분사로 한다.
→ 앞으로: from now on ; in (the) future
(ANS 1) No matter how angry you were, you should not have quarreled with him at that time. Unless you talk calmly with each other in future, neither of you will possibly be able to settle this important problem, I am afraid.
(ANS 2) However much you were offended, you should not have had a quarrel with him at that time. If you do not talk calmly with each other from now on, I am afraid that neither of you will possibly be able to solve this important problem.

It is (only) natural that those who go to United States for the first time should feel uneasy.
That you don't believe me is a great pity. = It is a great pity that you don't believe me.
위의 예처럼, natural을 비롯해서, necessary, important, essential, strange가 들어가는 경우 that 이하의 절은 for + 목적어 + to부정사로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. ex) It is (only) natural for those who go to the United States for the first time to fell uneasy.
(ANS) It is (only) natural that those who go to the United States for the first time should fell uneasy (or anxious) about whether they can make themselves understood in English.

→ 「빈둥빈둥 시간을 보내다」는 hang about/ loiter/ hang around로 표현하고 도중에 (시간을 낭비하지 말고) 「곧바로」는 go straight to ~ 로 한다.
(ANS) There is plenty of time, so you needn't hurry. But you mustn't loiter on the way.

^^The fact is that the leaders of Hanchongnyon and the inter-Korean
Pomchonghangnyon youth-student confederation are regarded here as a
pro-Pyongyang group with their support for the North Korean proposal
that unification of the two Koreas should be brought about through a
confederation. The leftist students at the same time refuse to recognize
the miserable plight of the North Korean people under the hereditary
tyranny of Kim Il-sung and his son, Chong-il. Incidentally, the two
delegates from Hanchongnyon illegally sent to the North via Europe
reportedly bowed in tribute at the tomb of Kim Il-sung, laying a
bouquet there. Ironically, pro-North Korean radical student leaders
here have rarely expressed respect for any of South Korea's presidents.

Now is not the time to tell him about it.
Let's leave it to the next time.

A: Are we going to the party?

B: But, I don't have anything nice to wear.
A: Don't worry about it.

Just let your hair down and have a good time.

About what time will it be delivered?

A: I'd like to send a bouquet of flowers to this address.

B: What kind of bouquet do you have in mind?

A: I don't know too much about flowers.
I was thinking of spending about twenty-five dollars.

B: No problem.

I'll make a nice bouquet of flowers for you.

think nothing of something

When he goes drinking he thinks nothing of spending most of his money at one time.

Luckily for most of us, that's the smallest bit of time we need to worry about.

One of two things will happen:
1.Everybody will arrive at 29 minutes and 38 seconds past 6 and get stuck in your doorway.
2.They will think you're quite strange and decide not to come at all.
Of course, the seconds are too short to worry about, so leave them out.
A few minutes don't matter so much, so just say "half past six" or "6:30".
On the other hand, a year is so long that everyone knows what year you are talking about.
So you don't really need to put the year in, either.
When you leave these extra details out, it gives you room on your invitation to put much more important things:

There are some events whose exact time is usually given in more detail than others.
Astronomers are probably silliest about this.
They sit at their telescopes for days and then proudly tell us that there will be a complete eclipse of the sun at 8 minutes and 19 seconds past 4 o'clock on the morning of January 5, 2167.
It's funny that these same people can also be very uncertain about other times, such as:

It was back in nineteen eighty something.... I think.

I'm telling you for the last time.
You cannot have your ears pierced.
I don't want to talk about it any more.

If you spent as much time thinking about math as you do about earrings, you would be at the top of your class.

S1 : I got a D on my spelling quiz.
S2 : Don't worry. You can do better next time. I will help you.
S1 : How can you help me?
S2 : I will show you how to memorize big words easily.
S1 : Really? Thanks! But how?
S2 : Even though the words are difficult, try not to think

S1 : Nam-su, what is the topic sentence in the second paragraph?

Most people act superstitiously from time to time.
Many persons may joke about keeping away from bad luck by not walking under a ladder or avoiding the number 13.
But they have such beliefs anyway.
Scholars once believed that all superstitions dated back to man's early history.
But many superstitions have appeared in relatively recent times.

Yesterday I went to a bookstore to buy a book about computers.
I asked a clerk where they had books about computers.
She said that they were on the second floor.
I was surprised that there were a large number of books.
It took me a long time to find one that was for beginners like me.

It's a good idea to bring a small gift when you go to a dinner party.
Flowers are always nice, or you might bring a bottle of wine if you know that the family drinks it.
You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late.
Don't get there early.
If you're going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.
Try to relax at the dinner table.
If you are confused about choosing the correct fork, knife, or spoon, just watch the other guests, and follow them.

If you recognize your friend Jack feels depressed, what should you do?
First talk to him about it.
Try to discover what he is feeling.
If you can't persuade him to discuss the problem,
try an approach like "you remind me of the time when I was depressed."
This may keep him from feeling lonely.
Then, provide emotional support.
Please don't forget to listen sympathetically, point out the realities of the situations and always offer hope.

Chopsticks are handy eating tools that have been around for a very long time.
The Chinese invented them over 2500 years ago.
Chopsticks are still used widely today, even though many people in Japan and China are using knives and forks
because they want to learn more about Western ways of eating.
While interest in using knives and forks is growing throughout Asia,
more and more Americans are learning to use chopsticks.
They use them mainly when they eat in Asian restaurants.
Waiters in most Japanese, Korean and Chinese restaurants in America will give you chopsticks if you ask for them.

Many boys and girls in the United States start thinking about being on their own during the late elementary school days.
They think about the time when they will be able to live by themselves.
They look forward to eating what they like whenever they like, going to bed when they want to and buying what they choose.
The big choice for many of them is not what career they are going to follow
but when they are going to leave home and be on their own.

Once I began writing my essay at 2:30 a.m.
At that time, I was proud of my material I had gathered.
However, after handing in my essay, I began to worry about what I had actually written.
Several days later, my teacher handed back the corrected essays.
Mine came back with red ink all over it.
Not only had I made a lot of spelling mistakes, but I had written strange sentences like, “Jazz, a direct result of hot dogs and hamburgers....”
Needless to say, I did not get a very good grade on that essay.

It's great that you're thinking about your future.
You have a lot of time before you need to decide on a career, though.
And there are ways to prepare for whatever you will do.
You can spend time finding and doing the things that you really like.
It will help you figure out what you most enjoy doing.

Robert: Do you think e-mail is convenient to use?
Sophia: I'm afraid not. It can take time to check and clear my e-mail box.
And it is wasteful of my time. Sometimes, the lines are busy, and it's difficult to log on.
Sometimes, the system crashes and can't be used.
Robert: Have you made mistakes when you send an e-mail?
Sophia:Yes, of course. The other day I complained about my boss in an e-mail to another employee.
I pressed the wrong key to send it, and everyone in the office got the mail, including my boss.

At one time, homeschooling was used for students who could not attend school because of learning difficulties.
Today, however, more parents are taking on the responsibility of educating their children at home due to dissatisfaction with the educational system.
Many parents are unhappy about class size.
In many schools, one teacher is responsible for thirty or forty students.
The result is often that children are deprived of the attention they need.
Increasing classroom violence has also motivated some parents to remove their children from school.

All of the wild Giant Pandas in the world live in western China.
They are found in dense bamboo forests high up in the mountains.
The forests are so dense that it has always been hard for people to find out much about wild pandas.
The pandas stay hidden in the forest most of the time, where people can't even see them.
In many ways, the Giant Panda is still a mysterious animal.
Nobody is really sure what kind of animal they are.
Some scientists say that the Giant Panda is a member of the raccoon family.
But others claim that it belongs to the bear family.
And a third group is sure that it doesn't belong to either family.

You'll find the unknown word comes again, perhaps several times, and by the end of the chapter you'll have guessed its meaning.
That's how we learn the meaning of words in our own language, isn't it?
When I'm telling a story to children, they seldom stop to ask what a word means.
Even when they read, they don't run for the dictionary every time they see an unknown word.
When I read my New York Times these days I often find articles about space programs.
There are sometimes words I don't know ―and some of them are so new that they're not yet in the dictionaries.
But I'm slowly beginning to understand what some of the words mean ― simply by meeting them so often.

Question : Are police fair to minorities?
James : Most police do treat minorities fairly.
If one officer makes a mistake, you can read about it everywhere.
Yet, thousands of police ―black, white, men, women―have been killed over the past years.
Betty : Blacks are not treated fairly.
Blacks have been in this country more than 400 years.
Yet, we are still treated as undesirables who should pack their bags and go back to Africa.
That is why we get no respect from the police.
Joe : Most of the time we forget that police are, in fact, people.
And they react in the same way we react.
On the whole they are doing a fine job.
Betty :

After many years, critical attention has finally been paid to the portion of the Miss America pageant called the swimsuit competition.
Thankfully, people are beginning to complain about this event.
In 1996, a telephone poll was conducted to determine if the swimsuit competition should remain.
Although the majority of callers voted to keep it, a good portion was critical and argued that the swimsuit competition should be eliminated.
The question will undoubtedly be raised again, and the next time the answer may well be different.
Let's hope so, because this portion of the pageant only lowers the dignity of women.

Although restrictions against opening adoption files make the search much harder,
they do not necessarily discourage those adoptees who want to discover who their biological parents are.
Those men and women who are desperate to find what they want to know will, if they can afford it, hire a detective to find out.
If not, some of them are willing to devote all their time and energy to finding more about their origins.

Yesterday I ate lunch at your restaurant, which you advertised as “a dining paradise.”
It was so completely packed with people that the line snaked out the door, and by the time I reached the counter, I was exhausted.
I decided on the hamburger steak special and side dishes, but there was no potato salad left and the beans were burnt more than baked.
At the table, the truck driver sitting across from me wouldn't stop talking about highway taxes.
Finally, when I rose to leave, the waiter “kindly” yelled at me to clean up after myself.
Throwing away that plate of food was the most enjoyable part of dining at your restaurant.

Because of technological advances, now more than ever before, personal privacy is hard to achieve.
For example, if you use a credit card, every charge you make is on a database that police, among others, can check.
If you use an automatic bank teller, the bank records the time, date, and location of your transaction.
Those bank records can be checked by anyone who has your Social Security number.
If you browse the Web, you should also know that many sites record what you looked at and when you were surfing.
Some web sites have been known to share information about who’s been looking at what sites.

Expect the Unexpected!
You should prepare yourself to be tolerant of uncomfortable bus trips and unfamiliar food.
You may encounter people with different concepts about time and personal space.
Be ready to learn about and observe differences.
The differences you observe while abroad will undoubtedly enrich your understanding of your own culture.
Try to learn as much as possible about local customs, beliefs, and language.
Talk to others who have been to your destination and seek opportunities to see movies and read up on the country and culture.

I have a special rule for travel: Never carry a map.
I prefer to ask for directions, and I can find out about different “style” of directions every time I ask, “How can I get to the post office?”
Here are some illustrations of those differences.

On the other hand, people in Los Angeles have no idea of directions or distances on the map.
They measure distance in time.
They might answer, “I guess it’s about five minutes from here.”

The farmer asked whether the student could answer a question he was wondering about.
He asked, “What is it that God is doing up in the sky tonight?”
The student pondered for a long time but confessed that he didn't know the answer.
“Never mind,” said the farmer. “Maybe there is no answer.”
The farmer gave the student a cozy room in which to sleep and a big breakfast the next morning.
“Now,” said the student, “I'll be on my way. Thank you.”

Whether it is a business-to-business transaction or a retail sale, e-commerce shifts the balance of power in favor of the customer.
This happens because the Web reduces distances.
Instead of spending hours driving around comparison shopping, a Web shopper can quickly gather information about products and sellers almost anywhere.
Businesses have found that the real distance between producers and consumers has disappeared.
In this new economic situation, the buyer is king.
If one seller cannot deliver a superior product at a competitive price in real time, another seller will.
The realization that any business can directly reach a final consumer is changing the relationships among producers, wholesalers, distributors, retailers, and consumers.

We have moved from going to a football game once a week to having sports on television twenty-four hours a day.
Billions of dollars go to the salaries of sports heroes each year.
Clearly, we are obsessed with sports and in particular, winning at sports.
The effect on our children is tremendous;
some children have no time with one or both parents who are locked to the television on a daily basis.
More important is the huge increase in parental concern about their children being on a winning team.
Winning has become more important than playing to do your best and have fun.

have long believed that either a change in climate or widespread disease killed the world’s huge animals, such as the woolly mammoth.
Some evidence suggests, though, that these theories may be incorrect.
In Australia, scientists have dug up bone and eggshell fossils that indicate a massive die-off of large animals about 46,000 years ago.
This extinction occurred after humans arrived on that continent about 52,000 years ago.
These time frames suggest that people are responsible for the animals' disappearance.
Similar evidence comes from North America.
Humans arrived there about 13,000 years ago.
Approximately 1,200 years after their appearance, about thirty species of large animals were gone.

A few years ago, due to road construction, my usual forty-five-minute commute was doubled.
I was spending ninety minutes to two hours in my car, twice a day!
During this time, my wife was away, traveling on business.
Each night we would talk on the phone, and I was quick to complain about the frustrations of my commute.

When Angela moved to our small town, everything started to change.
At the time, some members of the town's swimming club, including myself, were preparing for the National Championships,
which were just six months away.
I had always been the best, and everyone thought that I would be chosen for the relay race.
But now I had the new competition.
There was only one place for the butterfly on the relay team, and we both wanted it.
For two weeks it was awful.
Angela was always the star.
She was faster than I, and her form was better, too.
My chances of being selected were disappearing fast.
My fear caused me to be unfriendly to Angela.
I refused to speak to her and never said anything good about her.
Angela
