(ANS) Last Sunday an old friend of mine, whom I had not seen for a long time, came to see me, and we had a good talk for some five hours.
※ Some five hours「약 5시간」에서, some은 about와 같다.
(1) 의논드리고 싶은 중요한 문제가 있어서 내일 오후에 찾아뵙고 싶습니다. 그러나 만일 비가 오면 기다리지 말아 주십시오.
→ 의논드리고 싶은: 의논할: to discuss (또는 to talk about)
→ 당신과 몇 가지 의논해야 할 문제가 있습니다: I have several problems to discuss with you.
→ 기다리다: 남의 오기를 기다리다의 경우는 expect 가 좋다.
(ANS 1) As I have an important matter to talk with you about, I'd like to call on you tomorrow afternoon. But don't expect me in case of rain.
(ANS 2) I'd like to come to visit you tomorrow afternoon. I have some very important things to discuss with you. But if it should rain, forget about it, please.
(11) 당신이 원하는 사항이 이 책자에 들어 있을 것으로 기대합니다만 자료가 더 필요하시면 주저 마시고 말씀하십시오.

4. 처음으로 미국에 가는 사람들이 과연 자기가 하는 영어를 알아듣게 할 수 있을지 에 관해 불안해하는 것도 당연하다.

Should가 that절에 들어가는 이유는 전에 소개했는데, 다시 말하면, 제안. 요망. 명령 등의 표현에 동반하는 절 안에서는 should가 쓰인다. 이때 미국식 영어는 should를 생략하여 동사 원형을 쓰는 경우가 많다.
→ 「너는 내가 하는 말을 안 믿는다니 유감스럽다」 → That you don't believe me is a great pity. = It is a great pity that you don't believe me.
위의 예처럼, natural을 비롯해서, necessary, important, essential, strange가 들어가는 경우 that 이하의 절은 for + 목적어 + to부정사로 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. ex) It is (only) natural for those who go to the United States for the first time to fell uneasy.
(ANS) It is (only) natural that those who go to the United States for the first time should fell uneasy (or anxious) about whether they can make themselves understood in English.

'너는 나를 잃어 버렸다.' 즉 '너와 나는 끝장이다.'는 뜻일거라고
생각할지도 모른다. 그러나 이와는 달리 '니가 무슨 말을 하는지
모르겠다'는 말이다. 그러니까 I don't understand. 또는
I don't know what you are talking about. 또는
I don't get(or dig) it. 또는 I don't follow you.등과 같은 말이다.
You are talking over my head.란 말은 글자 그대로 해석하면
'네 말은 너무 어려워서 못 알아듣겠다'는 말인데 여기서 head를
신체적 의미의 '머리'가 아니라 정신적인 의미의 '머리' 다시
말하면 '머리가 좋다'고 할 때의 '머리' 즉 '지능 수준'으로
생각하면 '너는 내 지능 수준 이상으로 말하고 있다.'가 되어
우리말 '네 말은 너무 어려워 못 알아듣겠다.'는 말이 된다.
이 말은 약간 빈정대는 뜻으로 흔히 쓰이는 말이므로
점잖은 상대에게 함부로 쓰면 않 된다. 예를 들어 비즈니스
얘기를 하는데 미국 사람이 어려운 단어를 많이 써서 알아듣기가
곤란하다. 이럴 때 I don't follow you very well. 또는
Would you mind using simpler words?
'좀 더 쉬운 말을 써 주실수 있겠습니까?' 라고 말하는
것이 좋다. 어떤 영화를 봤는데 무슨 뜻인지 잘 모르겠다.
이럴 때 This movie is over my head. '이 영화는 내 지능수준
위에 있다.' 즉 '이 영화는 어려워서 모르겠다.' 는 말이 된다.
It's beyond me도 I don't understand.와 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다.
I can't do it.과 같은 뜻으로 쓰이기도 한다.
It's in the ballpark. 대충맞다.
* 우리는 '대충 얼마나 됩니까?' 등 대충 이란 말을 많이 쓰는데
about란 말을 써서 about how many? 또는 about how much? 라고
하면 된다. 그러나 미국인들은 꼭 그렇게 말하지 않고
Approximately how many? 또는 Roughly, how much?,
Give me a rough figure, Give me a ballpark figure등
여러 가지로 표현한다. '대충맞다'는 말도 just about right라고도
하고 It's in the ball park 라고도 한다. 이 말은 '그것이
야구장 안에 있다'란 의미인데 공이 떨어진 정확한 지점은
모르지만, 하여튼 야구장 안에는 있다. 그러니까 '대충은 맞다'는
뜻이 되는 것이다.

"인상이 어때?"라는 뜻으로 물었는데, 한국인들이
가장 저지르기 쉬운 오류 중의 하나이다. 여기서
명사인 impression을 받는 것은 how가 아니라 what이다.
"그를 어떻게 생각해?"의 경우도 how를 쓰는 게 아니라
"What do you think of him?"이다.
① What is your impression?(인상이 어때?)
② Can you give me your impression?(네 인상을 말해줄래?)
③ How do you feel about that?(그게 어떤 건 같아?)
④ Tell me your impression of that.(그것에 대한 인상을 말해봐.)

"잘 모르겠는데요." 기막힌 코메디다. 동사 know는 막연히
'안다' '모른다'라는 대답 외에는, 항상 그 내용을 목적어나
전치사(about)구로 동반한다. '잘 모른다'는 결국 '난 모른다'는
말이다. 하지만 이 영문대로 하면 '조금밖에 알지 못한다'라는
뜻이므로 말하려는 의도와 상반된다.
우리말의 '잘 모른다'는 영어로 '확실치 않다, 정말 모른다'라는
개념으로 옮겨야 한다.
① I'm not sure.(확실치 않군요.)
② I don't really have a clue.(정말 모르겠어요.)
③ It's a mystery to me.(오리무중이군요.)
④ Beats me.(낸들 별 수 있겠어요?)

기 위하여 시간이 좀 필요할 때, 군소리로 쓰는 말들이다.
you know와 마찬가지로 아주 일반적이며, 별 뜻은 없습니다.

( 무슨 말인지 이해를 못하는군. 그러면, 아! 이런 식으로 생각해
보는 것이 어떨까 ? )

2) '안됐지만' I am sorry.
'가진 것이 없지만'는 '가지고 있지 않다'로 생각합니다.

<주의> 몸에 지니고 있다는 뜻일 때는 with me 를 빠뜨몸
않도록 합시다.

다른 말로는 me too 또는 I agree를 들 수 있겠다. 상투적인 이
런 말보다는 참신한 기분이 드는 말이다.
참고로 same difference라는 것은 언뜻 모순된 두 단어가 짝을
이루었으나 의미는 "전혀 차이가 없는 똑같은 것(the same)"이
다.
Ex) A: I feel sort of cold. What about you?
B: Same here.
Whether you go or I go, it's the same difference.

When you leave these extra details out, it gives you room on your invitation to put much more important things:
