Chopsticks are handy eating tools that have been around for a very long time.
The Chinese invented them over 2500 years ago.
Chopsticks are still used widely today, even though many people in Japan and China are using knives and forks
because they want to learn more about Western ways of eating.
While interest in using knives and forks is growing throughout Asia,
more and more Americans are learning to use chopsticks.
They use them mainly when they eat in Asian restaurants.
Waiters in most Japanese, Korean and Chinese restaurants in America will give you chopsticks if you ask for them.

An old man got on a train with a gorgeous hat his son bought for him.
A young man beside him saw the hat on his lap and said, “Look, how elegant it is! Where did you get it?”
The old man said, “My son bought it at H. S. department store for me.”
The young man stealthily slipped his calling card into the hat and yelled,
A few weeks ago, I bought the same hat at H. S. department store
and stuck my calling card inside the hat, but the hat was stolen the other day.
Now I see the calling card in your hat, so it must be mine.
Now give it back to me.”
The old man thought for a while what he should do.
At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
“In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!

Some years ago, Fortune magazine conducted a survey of many of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.
The goal was to try to find traits that these successful people had in common.
Surprising to say, there weren't many! Some of these top executives had gone to excellent universities, others not.
Some brought years of experience to their jobs, while others had enjoyed a quicker rise to success.
One of the few things they shared was that, along the way, they had each experienced a major career setback.
Most of them, in fact, had been fired from at least one job.
Understandably, none of them at the time felt they had been treated fairly.
Dwelling on life's unfairness and cruelties will not make your life better.
Those CEOs learned to move beyond setbacks.
We might even conclude that, without confrontation with negative events, they would not be where they are today.

I recently had an encounter with a dog owner letting his large German shepherd run free around the park.
For the third time in the last month, I asked the man to restrain the dog while I ran past with my leashed dog, and he refused.
Another man who regularly plays with his dog simply stares when I ask him to restrain his dog.
Dog owners like these two men usually say their dogs are “safe.” But I've seen apparent “hellos” escalate into vicious fights between two “nice dogs.” Dog fights are brutal and bloody affairs impossible to break up without risking serious injury.
I was seriously bitten some years ago breaking up a fight between my dog and an unleashed dog, and had to have stitches and a rabies shot as a result.

Bing Crosby writes of an experience he had while traveling by train through the
Southwest many years ago.
Our train was stopped, and we were told there'd be a wait, so I walked up and down
the track behind the train. The rear brakeman, a hard-bitten little Texan, was walking
up and down, too, swinging his lantern. He came up to me and said,"They tell me that
rascal Bim Crosland's aboard. They say he's quite a singer, but as far as
I'm concerned, Larry Ross could run him in a gopher hole."
I agreed with him and thought no more of it. In the morning, there came a knock
on our door. It was the brakeman. He eyed me with a twinkle and said, "You
hoaxed me, didn't you? You're Bim Crosland yourself! Just for that, you've got to
sign my book."
So I signed it:"Bim Crosland."

The following story is told of Prince Bismarck.
A famous English diplomatist, while calling upon the Prince one day, asked
him how he managed to get rid of the class of visitors whom he didn't like
to meet.
"Oh," replied the chancellor, "I have got a very simple method. My wife
knows them pretty well, and, when she sees they are with me, she generally
contrives to come in and call me away on some pretext or other."
He had scarcely done speaking when the princess put her head in at the
door and said: "Otto, you must come and take your medicine. You ought
to have taken it ten minutes ago."

Passing through successive generations of a single family, Winterthur
has been a private estate for more than a century. Even after the
extensive renovations made to it between 1929 and 1931, the house
remained a family residence. This fact is of importance to the
atmosphere and effect of the museum. The impression of a lived-in house
is apparent to the visitor; the rooms look as if they were vacated only
a short while ago ― whether by the original owners of the furniture of
the most recent residents of the house can be a matter of personal
interpretation.

Several years ago while sheltering from a typhoon in a sleazy motel in
Cincinnati I came across a tattered beer-stained notice above a public
telephone. It reads simply: `This isn't a rehearsal. This is Life. Don't
miss it.'

The Grand Canyon, a long, narrow gorge in Arizona, is rich in geological
history. Its record of past plant and animal life also makes it an exciting and
invaluable object of study for biologists. Using samples from the two hundred
and seventeen miles of the canyon's walls, scientists analyze the building
materials that form the earth's surface and study the natural processes which
have affected the canyon over its four-billion-year history. These processes
include the eruption of volcanoes, which were active as recently as one thousand
years ago, and gradual decomposition by erosion. Scientists also study a great
variety of fossils that can be found in the canyon. These imprints of past forms
of life are preserved in rock. The lower levels of canyon rock contain fossils
of seashells and primitive algae, while the upperlevels contain fossils of such
creatures as dinosaurs and other prehistoric land animals. All of these
discoveries provide scientists with information both on the earth's history in
general and on the area around the Grand Canyon in particular.

씨름 much like wrestling is a hand to hand combat sport between
two opponnents.
The objective of the match is to throw the opponent to the ground.
If any parts of the body besides the feet of the wrestler touches
the ground he loses the match.
THe best way to picture 씨름 is to combine the conventional wrest
-ling with a little bit of judo and a little bit of 스모wrestling.
But unlike the other types of wrestling mentioned above a wrestler
taking part in a 씨름 match must bind his loins and the upper thi
-gh of his right let with a two foot long cloth called '샅바.'
One wrestler wears a red 샅바 while the other wears a blue 샅바.
The 씨름 match begins with the two participants kneeling down on
the ground facing each other.
Each wrestler grabs a hold of the샅바 at the loins with his right
hand while grabbing the 샅바 at the thigh with his left hand.
The two participants then stand up and try to get the opponent on
the ground by employing various tactics and skills.
As to the origins of 씨름 it is believed to have gained its popul
-arity approzimately 1500 years ago as paintings of this sport we
-re discovered on a wall in a 고구려 tomb.
씨름 was a sport that was enjoyed by people in all levels of the
society from the king to the lowly servants.
And during the 신라 and 고려 periods 씨름 became a part of annual
festivity. On every fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month call
-ed '백중' the biggest '씨름' contests were held.
This day was special because the servants had a chance to proove
their worthiness and to even climb up the social ladder by displa
-ying his dominance on 씨름 matches.
씨름 still remains very popular among Koreans. Participants range
from children to the very competitive professionals. The biggest
씨름 matches are usually held on national holidays.
