The defense may well raise objections to the court's decision to hear
the case twice a week, instead of the original schedule of once a week.
The defense, pleading for a more leisurely trial, argued the defendants'
health was being damaged and there was not enough time to prepare
from one session to the next, but lately they had abruptly started taking
issue with the judges'``bias'' toward the accused.

Ruling-Opposition Summits:
The political world is moving toward reconciliation with the
upcoming summits between President Kim Young-sam and the two
opposition leaders, Kim Dae-jung of the National Congress for New
Politics and Kim Jong-pil of the United Liberal Democrats. We hope the
political summits, to be separately held next week at Chong Wa Dae will
allow the parties to forge ahead in a new relationship of detente and
cooperation.

In fact, President Kim met with his two rivals shortly after the April
vote and asked for their cooperation to realize what he called ``grand
politics'' through dialogue and compromise. But this did not happen until
the rival parties struck a deal last week to normalize legislative activity
with the ruling party agreeing to consider opposition demands _ legal
and institutional guarantees for the political neutrality of law
enforcement authorities.

Despite the defense's protests, the court pushed the trial along

another mistake, the court failed to hear crucial testimony from former

Firm Measures For Labor's Return
The Korean Confederation of Trade Union(KCTU) has withdrawn from the
Tripartite Committee, comprised of labor, management and government
sectors.
The worry became a reality and even more concerning is that the other large
union organization, the Federation of Korean Trade Union (FKTU), is
preparing to back out this week, as well.
After only 13 months have expired since its creation, the Committee is in
danger of extinction. It will almost certainly cause additional instability in the
labor market.

A leader who has a good organizing ability makes efficient use of his time.
He organizes his mind, his day, his week, and his year.
He tells his people exactly what should be done, and makes them perform.
In addition, he gives careful consideration to each problem before he takes actions.
And he is willing to accept responsibility.

Abraham Lincoln showed his concern for everyday Americans while trying to lead his country through its greatest crisis.
Lincoln devoted one day a week to reading mail from the people and answering with notes on the back of the page.
Not surprisingly, many letters were written to seek jobs or other favors.
The president often tried to help these ordinary people even though they were strangers to power and influence.

When he was nine years old, he was brought to the door by a policeman who kept one hand on his arm as if to stop him from running away.
He had been caught writing with a crayon on a wall of the subway station and his parents were expected to discipline him.
The entire rest of the day he stayed in his room waiting for his father to come home from the shirt factory.
A slap in the face, he thought, perhaps that's all he'll get.
And maybe no pocket money for the coming week.

The two-day weekend is a great opportunity for students to relax after a week of hard study.
They can indulge in recreations and hobbies, and meet friends.
They can also do extra reading for self-improvement, for which they normally cannot find time.
However, there are students who waste their time on weekends.
Sometimes they waste both time and money playing computer games or hanging around on the street,
and as a result, are too tired on Monday to concentrate on their studies.
The best way to spend the weekend is to revise the previous week's lessons and prepare for those of the coming week.

In the Middle East, Israeli politicians never have to wear a tie in parliament but in Egypt where it's even hotter in the summer,
a politician wouldn't think of being in parliament without a tie.
No wonder a tie rebellion gets attention.
It happened during an African fashion show in the Netherlands this week.
The Dutch Queen's husband, Prince Claus, who was the host for the event,
suddenly decided and said out loud that his tie was like a snake around his neck.
That night on Dutch television the anchorman and the sportscaster took off their ties in support.

We have moved from going to a football game once a week to having sports on television twenty-four hours a day.
Billions of dollars go to the salaries of sports heroes each year.
Clearly, we are obsessed with sports and in particular, winning at sports.
The effect on our children is tremendous;
some children have no time with one or both parents who are locked to the television on a daily basis.
More important is the huge increase in parental concern about their children being on a winning team.
Winning has become more important than playing to do your best and have fun.

A recent study examined the Internet habits of 20 people who spent more than 30 non-working hours a week online over a three-year period.
Through research, it was found that these participants' habits met the criteria for a psychological disorder,
or more specifically, impulse control disorder.
The findings of this study have given rise to a new term, “Net compulsion,” to describe Internet addiction.
Since these findings, Net compulsions have been further defined to include “compulsive online gambling” and “online auction addiction.”

Older people can strengthen their brains as well.
A university studied a group of seniors, who aged from seventy to seventy-nine.
Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week.
The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate.

Thirty to forty years ago, doctors told mothers to lay babies face down to sleep so they would not choke on vomit.
Nowadays, doctors say babies should sleep on their backs.
Moms of the 1960s and 1970s also believed that wheeled baby walkers helped their children learn to walk.
Now, though, doctors say that walkers actually hinder babies' walking.
Decades ago, mothers bathed their infants daily.
Today's doctors say babies need baths only about twice a week.
In the 1960s and 1970s, mothers believed that their babies could sleep well only in complete silence.
Today, however, doctors advise parents to help their babies learn to sleep with background noise.

You've passed the interview and landed the job.
Now it is your first week on the job.
Is this job right for you? Is the job what you expected?
Maybe you thought you loved working alone,
but now you're stuck in a tiny office with minimal human contact,
realizing that you hate working in a secluded setting.
A job is like a marriage or having a spouse.
Sometimes you don't know it's right for you until you live with it.
So as the saying goes, “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.”

A group of researchers observed kindergarteners playing with crayons.
The kids seemed to enjoy it with great concentration and apparent pleasure for internal reasons.
Next, the researchers promised some of the children “Good Player Awards” for their drawing efforts with the crayons.
For one week, these children knew they would get a “prize” at the end of the week for their drawing behavior.
For the remaining children, no such promises were made.
There was a significant change in the crayon use among the kids promised external rewards.
Surprisingly, they spent much less time playing with crayons than before.
By contrast, the other children maintained their normal frequency and duration of use.

Americans today have different eating habits because their lifestyles have changed.
American lifestyles now include growing numbers of people who live alone, single parents and children, and double-income families.
These changing lifestyles are responsible for the increasing number of people who must rush meals or sometimes skip them altogether.
Many Americans have less time than ever before to spend preparing food.
Partly as a consequence of this limited time, 60% of all American homes now have microwave ovens.
They also eat out four times a week on the average.
The way people live determines the way they eat.

Last year, my husband was told by a resident physician at a highly respected teaching hospital that he would be called if anything "out of the ordinary" showed up.
He heard nothing and assumed that everything was OK.
Last week, he had annual checkup, and his doctor asked, "Why didn't you call to find out about the changes in your cells?"
The answer was, of course, "I didn't know about it."

A modern newspaper could not be sold at a profit without advertisements.
A single copy costs more to produce than the price paid by the reader.
A newspaper with a large circulation may cost about $200,000 a week to produce.
About a quarter of this sum is received from the business firms who advertise in its pages.

I wonder how many people know that the post office operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
This is essential in order to keep up with the half-billion letters a day that come through.
In a year the post office moves 171 billion pieces of mail across the United States.
In Boise, Idaho, alone, it moves 1,200,000 letters a day.

A short time later, the man arrived and identified himself.
He said he had just arrived in Las Vegas for a two-week vacation and all his money and credit cards were in that wallet.
He offered me $20, which I refused.
He insisted, and since I was in a hurry to catch the bingo game across the street, I accepted.
