The two snakes that you are most likely to encounter around your home or garden are the Common Garter snake and the Eastern Ribbon snake.
At first glance it is difficult to tell them apart.
Here are a few clues.
The Garter snake has two rows of black spots.
His tail also isn't as long as that of the Ribbon snake.
The Ribbon snake by contrast has a tail that is about a third of its total length.
Measure the length by starting from the end of the tip to where the snake's body width stops widening.
The Ribbon snake also has three yellow stripes that run the length of his body.

A recent survey by America's most popular teen magazine revealed that

Even more recently, USA Today published the eye-opening results of a study of teens under stress.

All of the wild Giant Pandas in the world live in western China.
They are found in dense bamboo forests high up in the mountains.
The forests are so dense that it has always been hard for people to find out much about wild pandas.
The pandas stay hidden in the forest most of the time, where people can't even see them.
In many ways, the Giant Panda is still a mysterious animal.
Nobody is really sure what kind of animal they are.
Some scientists say that the Giant Panda is a member of the raccoon family.
But others claim that it belongs to the bear family.
And a third group is sure that it doesn't belong to either family.

At the beginning of this decade, one-third of the doctors graduating from medical schools were women.
Now the figure is around 40 percent.
Women doctors will soon be in the majority in some specialties, and they are rapidly getting into traditionally male positions.
This shifting balance in what has been considered a male profession is changing medicine in a number of ways.
One can already see changes in medical education as the number of women professors in medical schools increases.

Being the “brightest” member of my third grade class, I was asked to recite a rather lengthy poem for a school event.
My initial response to the task was “No big deal,” and I jumped at the opportunity to be in the spotlight yet again.
I casually practiced my presentation at home.
The day came.
I began to recite the poem, but I suddenly lost my memory and could say only two lines before I dried up.
My face became red with embarrassment as the audience giggled quietly and my teacher secretly fed me my lines.

Many people have been thinking of the possibility of sending human beings to Mars.
But we aren't really at that point yet.
Why? The first reason is safety.
Different nations have sent more than thirty probes toward Mars, but only one-third of them have survived the trip.
The second reason is cost.
It costs about a million dollars per kilogram to deliver robots to Mars.
It would take at least fifty billion dollars to get a person to Mars.
The last reason is the cosmic radiation that astronauts would absorb during the mission.
Much of this radiation is blocked on Earth by the Earth’s magnetic field.
Mars has no magnetic field.

Several factors can interfere with having a good memory.
One such factor is a lack of motivation.
Without a real desire to learn or remember something, you probably won’t.
Another cause is a lack of practice.
To stay sharp, memory skills, like any other skill, must be used on a regular basis.
A third factor that can hurt memory is self-doubt.
If you’re convinced you won’t remember something, you probably won’t.
A person with a positive attitude will do much better on a test than someone who is sure he or she won’t remember the material.
Lastly, distraction can interfere with memory.
If you are being distracted by the sound of a television or a conversation nearby,
try to find a quiet environment before you attempt to commit something to memory.

Falls are a serious public health problem among older adults.
More than a third of adults aged 65 years and older fall each year.
For seniors, the risk of falling may be heightened by medications that cause dizziness or that can impair balance.
Falls can also result from diminished vision, hearing, and muscle strength.
Fortunately, preventing falls is a matter of common sense.
You can start by targeting the bathroom.
Securely attach non-slip grab bars and rubber mats in tubs and showers.
Install a raised toilet seat if needed.

Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament.
Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches.
The third match proved to be more difficult, but the boy used his one move to win the match.
Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced.
For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched but he went on with his match.
When his opponent made a critical mistake, the boy used his move to pin him.
The boy had won the match and the tournament.
He was the champion.

I recently had an encounter with a dog owner letting his large German shepherd run free around the park.
For the third time in the last month, I asked the man to restrain the dog while I ran past with my leashed dog, and he refused.
Another man who regularly plays with his dog simply stares when I ask him to restrain his dog.
Dog owners like these two men usually say their dogs are “safe.” But I've seen apparent “hellos” escalate into vicious fights between two “nice dogs.” Dog fights are brutal and bloody affairs impossible to break up without risking serious injury.
I was seriously bitten some years ago breaking up a fight between my dog and an unleashed dog, and had to have stitches and a rabies shot as a result.

But there is a controversial side to globalization - a dark side, the side that has so many people demonstrating when the World Bank and IMF meet.
They are concerned that the poor and weak are being left behind in this new global world, that the Third World may never even feel any of the benefits.
In fact, some of the power we once had to control our environment, our economy, our lives, has slipped away.
Increasingly, foreign banks, corporations, and institutions are affecting our communities.

Wherein lies the value of educating aesthetic taste?
The most straightforward answer is seemingly obvious.
There is much pleasure to be derived from appreciation of fine art works, and so providing students the means to appreciate them will make their lives more enjoyable later on.
But this answer itself raises two further questions.
First, does a person's overall aesthetically derived pleasure typically increase when that person is trained to appreciate the 'higher' as opposed to 'lower' art forms?
Second, does appreciation of the 'higher' forms really depend on a person's being educated to appreciate them?
Clearly a third question is implicit here as well, namely: in what sense are the 'higher' forms higher?
The issue of requiring or even encouraging aesthetic education is tied also to the question of whether certain sorts of taste in art are objectively better than others.

In parts of Africa the farmers cut down trees and bushes so that they can till the land.
When the soil is exhausted they move on.
Most old fields can be re-cultivated after a period of rest.
Early farmers in Europe did the same.
When there was not enough unused woodland left they used a third of their fields for pasture, letting the animal manure fertilize the soil before the next tilling.
Then it was discovered that plants like clover and beans enrich the soil, so that they can be used every year.
Later, minerals were added to the soil to replace those used up by the crops.
Modern farming uses many chemicals, which must, however, be tested to see that they do not affect human and animal health.

A motor-vehicle survey has revealed that, in 1940, each car on the road contained
an average of 3.2 persons. In 1950, the occupancy had declined to 2.1 persons per car.
By 1960, the average was down to 1.4 persons. If we project the statistics to 1980,
every third car going by will have nobody in it.

The third error is the notion that learning and teaching always ought to
have immediate results, show a profit, lead to success. It is true that education is
intended to benefit the entire personality. But it is not possible, not even
desirable, to show that many of the important subjects which are taught as part
of education will make the learner rich, fit him for social life or find him
a job.

Explains Young Yoo, a south Korean economist, "We find ourselves sandwiched
between the powerful developed countries and the Third World."

During semester bread out neighbor's daughter invited her boyfriend to a
homecooked meal, an invitation he eagerly accepted. At dinner he was soon into his
third large helping, while everyone watched in amazement.
After the fourth plateful he complimented the hostess on her cooking. Then,
noticing the dessert fork next to his plate, he asked, "What's this fork for?" Without
hesitation his girlfriend answered, "That's in case the first one wears out."

Three boys were bragging about their fathers. One said, "My dad's so fast
he can shoot an arrow and get to the target before the arrow does."
"That's nothing," the second boy replied. "My dad's so fast he can shoot
a deer at 500 yards and get to the deer before it falls."
"Big deal!" the third said. "My dad works for the government and gets off
work at 4:30, but he's so fast he gets home by 3:45."

As a product demonstrator, my mother had to promote a diet beverage in
a supermarket. During the first two days she was indisposed, so she asked
her sister to substitute for her. Back on the job the third day, she
noticed two salesgirls walking past several times.
They looked at her, then shook their heads skeptically. Finally my mother
asked them what they found so odd. "This must be a real miracle drink
you're offering," they replied. "Amazing, how much weight you've lost
in only two days!"
My mother and her sister look very much alike, but my aunt is about
30 pounds heavier.

By the year 2000, the area of the earth's forests is expected to
diminish by a fifth. Most of the loss will be in tropical forests in
developing countries and will be permanent. For developed countries, the
decline will mean price rises for wood products, but for developing
countries the impact will be more severe. Nine-tenths of the wood
consumed in the Third World is used for cooking and heating. Shortages
will mean that a larger portion of cash will be used to pay for this
basic fuel.

Now we are about to enter a third wave known as "ubiquitous computing."
Computers in the 21st century will be distributed throughout our public and private spaces and embedded in everyday objects, from clothes to chairs, from coffee cups to cakes.
With their own computing capabilities, these "smart" things will relieve human beings of some of life's more mundane chores and help out with a host of trickier tasks.

Achieving all three of those feats over a sustained period of time will be a very difficult task, given the uneven pace of technological and commercial change and the unpredictable fluctuations in international politics.
Yet achieving the first two feats or either one of them without the third will inevitably lead to relative eclipse over the longer term, which has of course been the fate of all slower-growing societies that failed to adjust to the dynamics of world power.
As one economist has soberly pointed out, "It is hard to imagine, but a country whose productivity growth lags 1 percent behind other countries over one century can turn, as England did, from the world's indisputed industrial leader into the mediocre economy it is today."

Third, we, as citizens of the world, should recognize that there are many peoples and cultures in the world, and should understand them.
Many people around the world do not understand others and deny each others.
Those foolish thoughts like ours are the best cannot help at all.
Besides, to win the competition against other countries, it must be a reasonable way to understand them.

A total of 135,000 married couples divorced in 2001, the National Statistical Office reported Wednesday.
That number works out to 2.8 divorces for every 1,000 people, the world's third-largest break-up rate.

A low birth rate signifies a higher level of education and the growing presence of women in the work force.
Added to that are a greater hesitancy toward marriage by women, a growing tendency toward staying single and the world's third-highest divorce rate.
Thus, the government will do well to start resolving realistic and immediate issues at hand, such as sharing the burdens of child rearing and establishing mid- to long-term social policies to prop up the birth rate.
The governments of Japan, Singapore and Taiwan have child-birth incentive policies from which Korea could learn much.

As a result of the tighter job market, an increasing number of job seekers with strong academic backgrounds are showing interest in non-paying jobs.
According to a recent survey, one-third of job seekers would work without pay since they are desperate to gain employment experience in order to get a foot in the door.
The findings showed 32% of males and 37% of female job seekers said they would work without payment.
Despite the increasing numbers of job seekers who are willing to work as unpaid interns, the ratio of companies hiring interns or part-time employees as regular employees is still very low.

The effects of CO2-induced climate warming on Antarctica have been studied using numerical models that simulate ice flow and changes in ice sheet and ice shelf size over time (Huybrechts and Oerlemans 1990, Budd et al. 1994).
The model predictions can be summarized in three main points.
First, the glaciers and ice shelves of the Peninsula are lost.
Second, the large Ross and Ronne-Filchner Ice Shelves, into which the West Antarctic Ice Sheet drains, are lost to basal melting assumed to be caused by increased SST.
Third, the volume of ice in both the West Antarctic and East Antarctic ice sheets increases as a result of increased snow accumulation.

Researchers believe the damage is probably minimal in the first two weeks, but during the rest of the first trimester, when the fetus' organs are forming, the effects may be especially severe.

Solitary roosters shelter in dense vegetation or enter a cavity - horned
larks dig holes in the ground and ptarmigan burrow into snow banks - but
the effect of sheltering is magnified by several birds huddling together
in the roosts, as wrens, swifts, brown creepers, bluebirds, and anis do.
Body contact reduces the surface area exposed to the cold air, so the
birds keep each other warm. Two kinglets huddling together were found to
reduce their heat losses by a quarter and three together saved a third
of their heat.
brown creepers, bluebirds, and anis

In the longer run, too, American hotels made other national conventions
not only possible but pleasant and convivial. The growing custom of
regularly assembling from afar the representatives of all kinds of
groups ― not only for political conventions, but also for commercial,
professional, learned, and avocational ones ― in turn supported the
multiplying hotels. By mid-twentieth century, conventions accounted for
over a third of the yearly room occupancy of all hotels in the nation;
about eighteen thousand different conventions were held annually with a
total attendance of about ten million persons.

After the Civil War(1861-1865), as ice was used to refrigerate freight
cars, it also came into household use. Even before 1880, half the ice
sold in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, and one-third of that
sold in Boston and Chicago, went to families for their own use. This had
become possible because a new household convenience, the icebox, a
precursor of the modern refrigerator, had been invented.

An alien exploring Earth would probably give priority to the planet's
dominant, most-distinctive feature ― the ocean. Humans have a bias
toward land that sometimes gets in the way of truly examining global
issues. Seen from far away, it is easy to realize that landmasses occupy
only one-third of the Earth's surface.

The Second World War mobilized the Germans in more than one sense. Not
only did the majority of the male population swarm out as far as the
North Cape and the Caucasus, not to mention nearly the whole Jewish
population who were forced into emigration and death, but Germany also
abducted as many as ten million laborers, a third of them women, from
all over Europe, so that thirty per cent of all jobs, and in the
armaments industry more than half, were done by foreigners. After the
war, there were millions of displaced persons; only very few remained in
Germany. Compared to these catastrophic movements all contemporary
turbulences appear harmless.

Slavery is an obvious and dramatic example of the exploitation of one
group by another. There are several hypothesized conditions which can
lead to this use of other human beings. First, the culture must have one
primary goal, the maximization of profit. Second, societal organizations
such as the busi- ness and educational establishments must also support
this primary goal. Third, there must be a large labor force for the
unpopular and menial jobs. Fourth, the inferior group must be considered
heathen or subhuman and therefore deserving unequal treatment.

Some users swear by the tapes. Melissa Farrell of Lake Wellenpaupack,
Pa., had always thought that reading aloud would affect the unborn. When
she became pregnant, the electronic fetal-improvement system seemed a
good way to give daughter Muryah Elizabeth “as much of an opportunity
as possible and see if it would stimulate her thought process.” Though
only 21 months old, Muryah plays with toys designed for youngsters twice
her age, Farrell says. In Kirkland, Wash., Lisa Altig is using the tapes
for a third time. Her two child- ren, Natalie, 3, and Richie, 18 months,
were relaxed babies who now “seem to pick up on things fast” says
their mom. “They have an energy for learning.”

Yet its alloys can possess the strength of steel, with only a third of its weight.
Thus, when Alexander Calder designed one of his last mobiles-a soaring
creation eighty feet long-his choice of aluminum over steel cut two tons
from its weight. Alumnium also assures the masterpiece virtual immortality.
The instance the metal is exposed to air, its surface aquires a
transparent film that seals the interior against further corrosion.
