Blindness is one of the most difficult of human handicaps because our eyes are so important to our learning.
One thing making education possible and life more pleasant for the blind is the development of a system by which they are able to learn to read.
Since the blind cannot use their eyes, they are taught to use the sense of touch in their fingers.
Reading raised printed matter of the common type is very, very difficult.
The special system now used was invented by Charles, and perfected by Louis Braille.

It's frustrating.
You're excited about the work you've just completed on your computer.
You start to print.
And suddenly it happens.
You run out of ink.
To make matters worse, when you take the empty color cartridge out of the printer and shake it, you can still hear ink inside.
Although only one color has run dry, the whole cartridge is now useless.
Obviously, throwing away unused ink translates into wasted money.
Well, the good news is that we recently introduced a system whereby each color is separated into individual ink tanks.
They're called ¡°Eco Tanks¡± and they dramatically reduce a printer's running costs.

Every human being will grow older and die.
Aging in itself is not a disease or a sickness, but as people age, disease often follows and the elderly need others' help.
In addition, the percentage of senior citizens in the world has increased very quickly, and our society is no exception.
The problem for us is that we have left the care of the elderly to their families.
We must change our attitude toward this issue and develop more systematic social programs.
The sooner we realize the importance of the role of government in this matter, the smaller the final cost to society as a whole will be.

Sue : Important social skills can be achieved through other activities, such as charity work for old people, instead of sports classes.
When something is forced, the benefits it may bring are destroyed.
After all, you can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
Taking part in a sports class should therefore be a matter of free choice for the students, although encouraged by the school.

Learning a language is not a matter of acquiring a set of rules and building up a large vocabulary.
The teacher¡¯s roles should not be directed at informing his students about a language, but at enabling them to use it.
The drills and exercises a student does have one end in sight: to enable him to become a skilled performer.
The student¡¯s command of a language will therefore be judged not by how much he knows but by how well he can perform in public.

On a very deep level we all want to be loved, accepted, encouraged and supported, no matter what our age.

¡°Boys and girls, playtime is over, get back to work.¡±
Most of us learned early in life that work and play are separate, and that if you are playing you could not possibly be working.
But to have a livable work environment, a certain amount of playfulness or lightheartedness is required.
An innovative environment demands even more playfulness.
Assuming the matter-of-fact attitude may seem more efficient, but it constricts one's capacity to generate new solutions when needed.
The freedom to be playful expands creative opportunities.
The spirit that allows people to wear a peculiar tie or to laugh out loud without fearing what others think is the same spirit that encourages them to consider new ideas.

Classes in literature are useful no matter what job you intend to have when you finish university.
Books are about life.
People who study literature learn the skills of reading carefully and understanding characters, situations, and relationships.
This kind of understanding can be useful to teachers and business people alike.
Literature classes also require a lot of writing, so they help students develop the skill of clear communication.
Of course, a professional writer needs to have this skill, but it is an equally important skill for an engineer.
Finally, reading literature helps develop an understanding of many different points of view.

The root of a word provides its essential, or main, meaning.
That root meaning never changes no matter what prefixes or suffixes you add.
Look, for example, at the two words farmer and farming.
What root supplies the essential meaning for both words?
The answer is farm.
Add the suffix er, and you refer to a person who farms.
Change that suffix to ing, and you are talking about the activity of farming.
You can change the prefixes and suffixes attached to a word, yet it will retain its original meaning.
Take away the root, and the meaning goes with it.

Social sciences study the area of human behavior.
Human behavior patterns vary from place to place and group to group.
However, natural sciences are somewhat different.
When a chemist studies hydrogen, he can assume that one hydrogen atom is very much like another,
wherever it is found, and that the conditions surrounding it can be quite accurately controlled.
The same is true when a physicist measures a metal bar;
he can be quite sure that it will not stretch or shrink in length as long as natural conditions are the same.
Because of the predictable nature of their subject matter, natural sciences are often called ¡°easy sciences.¡±

Falls are a serious public health problem among older adults.
More than a third of adults aged 65 years and older fall each year.
For seniors, the risk of falling may be heightened by medications that cause dizziness or that can impair balance.
Falls can also result from diminished vision, hearing, and muscle strength.
Fortunately, preventing falls is a matter of common sense.
You can start by targeting the bathroom.
Securely attach non-slip grab bars and rubber mats in tubs and showers.
Install a raised toilet seat if needed.

In 1876, Japanese government ordered each province to send its own map in order to make a modern map of Japan.
Shimane inquired whether it should include Ulleungdo and Dokdo in the East Sea.
Japan's Department of the Interior conducted an investigation for five months and confirmed that Ulleungdo and Dokdo belonged to Joseon.
However, considering the importance of the matter, the Department of the Interior decided to leave the final decision to the Prime Minister.
Reviewing its consultation, he reconfirmed that those islands belonged to Joseon and then sent an official order that the province delete the two islands from its map.
These historical facts further prove that Dokdo belongs to Korea.

The driving force of the movement is a feeling that Europeans have lost
control of their future, that they could be incinerated in a war between the
superpowers. In West Germany, the starkest of the protest slogans hits closest

articulated across Europe by a frightened young generation, and by its elders too.

In essence, Reagan aims to treat the causes, not the symptoms, of nuclear
proliferation. He believes that nations wanting nuclear weapons badly enough
will find the means to get them; that the best deterrent is to alleviate that
desire, through easing regional tensions and supplying conventional military aid.
At the same time, Reagan plans to increase exports of U.S. nuclear technology to
nations pursuing peaceful nuclear energy programs, a plan that will probably do
little to relieve America's perceived complicity - if not make matters worse.

As the American colonies in the seventeenth century prospered and
trade increased among them, an efficient way of hauling goods
overland was needed. The answer was the Conestoga wagon. It had a
boat-shaped body and was suited for mountain trails. No matter how
the wagon was tilted, the cargo stay in place. For feeding the
horses, there was a trough attached to the rear end. A Conestoga had
six or seven overhead bows, or arches, with the ones in the center
being a little lower than the ones on the end. These bows supported a
covering of white canvas that protected the good from the weather.
The wagon was capable of carrying up to eight tons, though for each
ton a horse had to be added to the team.

When the newspaper chooses to make a scapegoat of some perhaps quite
harmless person, the results may be very terrible. Fortunately, as yet
this is a fate which most people escape through their obscurity; but as
publicity gets more and more perfect in its methods, there will be an
increasing danger in this novel form of social persecution. This is too
grave a matter to be treated with disdain by the individual who is its
victim, and whatever may be thought of the great principle of the freedom
of the press, I think the line will have to be drawn more sharply than
it is by the existing libel law.

My friend's neighbor has to walk his dog, Cindy, no matter what the weather.
One evening there was a heavy downpour, but he dutifully grabbed his rain
gear, called Cindy and headed out. The hood of his slicker gave him tunnel
vision, but enabled him to face the storm. After grudgingly making a
four-block circuit for the dog's sake, he headed home, cold and wet¡ªand
found Cindy patiently waiting for him in the garage.

I have frequently experienced myself the mood in which I felt that all
is vanity; I have emerged from it not by means of any philosophy, but
owing to some imperative necessity of action. If your child is ill, you
may be unhappy, but you will not feel that all is vanity; you will feel
that the restoring of the child to health is a matter to be attended to
regardless of the question whether there is ultimate value in human
life or not. A rich man may, and often does, feel that all is vanity,
but if he should happen to lose his money, he would feel that his next
meal was by no means vanity.

All great books contain boring portions, and all great lives have
contained uninteresting stretches. Imagine a modern publisher confronted
with the Old Testament as a new manuscript submitted to him for the
first time. It is not difficult to think what his comments would be,
for example, on the genealogists.
"Mr. dear sir," he would say, "this chapter lacks pep; you can't expect
your reader to be interested in a mere string of proper names of persons
about whom you tell him so little. You have begun your story, I will
admit, in fine style, and at first I was very favorably impressed, but
you have altogether too much wish to tell it all. Pick out the high
lights, take out the superfluous matter, and bring me back your
manuscript when you have reduced it to a reasonable length."
