Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women, a favorite among stories in American
literature.

(5) 택시의 수가 이렇게 많지 않으면 교통 사고는 좀더 줄 것이다.
→ 「~이 줄다」는 수를 나타낼 때는 few/fewer로, 양을 나타낼 때는 little/ less로 각각 표시한다.
→ Traffic accidents would be fewer. 혹은 Traffic accidents would not be so many.처럼 few와 many를 보어로 사용하는 것은 불만족스러운 경우가 많다. 예외는 있지만 가산 명사인 경우는 less가 아니고 fewer를 사용해야 한다.
→ A reduction in the number of taxis would mean fewer car crashes.

→ 일반적으로: in general; generally (speaking)
→ 말씨가 빠르다: speak fast
→ 상당히 주의하지 않으면: unless we pay considerable attention; if we do not pay attention.
→ 무슨 말을 하고 있는지: what they are talking about
→ 알 수가 없다: can hardly follow (them); cannot understand (them)
(ANS 1) Foreigners, who have come to Korea recently, generally speak at such a fast pace that it is difficult for us to understand them if we do not pay attention.

2. 불타는 태양 아래서 수영을 즐기던 것이 엊그제 같은데, 벌써 아침 저녁 이면 쌀쌀하다.
→ 「~하던 것이 불과 엊그제 같다」는 It seems as if (or as though) it had been just a few days ago that~. It seems only a few days ago that~ 현재의 사실에 대해서「마치 ~인 것처럼」이라고 할 때는 as if (or as though) 뒤에 오는 동사는 가정법과거가 쓰이지만, 여기서처럼 과거의 일을 말할 때는 가정법과거완료형으로 한다.
→ 「그는 모든 것을 알고 있는 것처럼 말한다」 He talks as if he knew everything.
→ 「나의 아주머니는 마치 나를 자기 아들처럼 사랑해 주신다」 My aunt loves me as if I were her own son.
→ 「그는 아무 일도 없었던 것처럼 보였다」 He looked as if nothing had happened.
→ 「그는 아픈 것처럼 보인다」와「그는 아픈 것처럼 보였다」의 차이는 「~보인다」라는 현재와「~보였다」의 과거 차이인데, 이것을 영어로 옮길 때는 look와 looked로만 달라지지, as if 후반까지 시제를 달리할 필요는 없다. He looks as if he were ill./ He looked as if he were ill.
→ 「불타는 태양 아래서」under a (or the) scorching (or burning) sun. 형용사를 붙여, 특수한 모양의 태양이라고 말할 때는 부정관사를 쓴다. 달도 마찬가지로, a full moon(만월), a half moon(반달) 등.
→ 「아침, 저녁으로 쌀쌀하다」feel chilly in the morning and evening; have cool(er) mornings and evening.
(ANS) It seems as if it had been just a few days ago that we were enjoying swimming under a scorching sun, but it is already a little chilly in the morning and evening.

strong은 폭 넓고 가장 일반적인 말이며, 긴장·압력 따위를 지탱하는 힘, 질병·파괴에 저항하는 힘, 굳센 세력 뿐 만 아니고, 적극적으로 행사할 수 있는 힘을 가리킨다.
a strong body/ a strong will/ a strong foundation/ Fishermen need strong backs and arms.
확대된 용법에서는 효력이 강한 것, 색채·감정 따위가 치열하고 격렬한 것에 쓰인다.

stout는 strong보다 뜻이 강한 말로 부러지거나 굴복하는 일이 없이 긴장·압박·파괴력에 저항하는 힘, 또는 혹독한 사용·극렬한 고통·유혹 따위를 이겨내는 힘을 가리킨다. 사람에게 적용되는 경우에는 보통 결의·완고·대담함을 암시한다.
a stout rope(cane, ship, paper)/ He has a stout heart.
sturdy는 생물·무생물이 굳세거나 건강하다는 것을 암시하는 성질을 나타내는 말이다. 크다든가, 맹렬하다든가, 매섭다든가 따위에서 오는 힘을 암시하지 않고, 건강하고 왕성한 성장·튼튼하고 단단한 짜임새·단호한 정신 따위에서 오는 내적인 힘을 암시한다.
sturdy oaks(faith)/ The little fellow has sturdy legs.
stalwart는 그 어원의 뜻 「토대」(foundation)가 보여주듯이 깊이 세워지거나 든든히 뿌리박힌 데에서 오는 힘, 난공 불락의 힘, 완전히 신뢰할 수 있는 힘을 암시한다. 사람의 체구·체력에 대해서 쓰이는 경우에는 대단히 센 힘을 언제나 암시하지만, 영웅 같은 골격이라든가 또는 큰 체격을 강조한다.

tenacious는 그 품은 뜻이 tough에 가장 가까운 말로 획득한 것을 유지하는 힘, 지위·사상 따위에 집착해서 그런 것을 보유하는 힘을 크게 강조한다.
