Needless to say, tobacco is poisonous and smoking does great harm
to the health. Among the more than 4,700 chemicals in tobacco are 42
cancer causing substances, two of which are tar and nicotine. The World
Health Organization (WHO) has posted a warning that the number of
people around the world who die of smoking will increase to 10 million
in 2025, up from the three million in 1994, and some 30,000 of them will
be in South Korea.

When my grandmother began to have problems in seeing, hearing and walking, a number of family meetings were held.
We discussed what we should do for her.
We talked of placing her in a nursing home, but that idea was quickly given up.
Although my grandmother would be with more people of her own age, she would see even less of her family, and that would break her heart.
Mother would not allow her own mother to grow old and weak in a strange place.
She said, ¡°I will not let Grandmother end up in a nursing home,¡±
and I admire my mother greatly for this decision.
It was not an easy decision for her.
When so many others are running away from the problem of what they should do about their old parents, my mother stands out remarkably.

He has, we may suppose, a charming house, a charming wife, and charming
children. He wakes up early in the morning while they are still asleep
and hurries off to his office.
There it is his duty to display the qualities of a great executive; he
cultivates a firm jaw, a decisive manner of speech, and an air of
sagacious reserve calculated to impress everybody except the office boy.
He dictates letters, converses with various important persons on the
phone, studies the market, and presently has lunch with some person
with whom he is conducting or hoping to conduct a deal.
The same sort of thing goes on all the afternoon. He arrives home, tired,
just in time to dress for dinner. At dinner he and a number of other
tired men have to pretend to enjoy the company of ladies who have no
occasion to feel tired yet. How many hours it may take the poor man
to escape, it is impossible to foresee.

Great attention should be paid to the letterhead.
It should, of course, carry the name of the firm, and other important items such as address, telephone number, and possible the department and name of the executive.
Law firms customarily list all the partners and associates on the letterhead.
In some cases, a slogan or a list of the main products is included.
A common error is to show both a post office box number and a street number, which can be confusing to the person replying.
Also distressing is printing the address in microscopic type with pale, almost illegible ink.

A great number of people came from Europe.

Science and technology have changed a great deal since the latter part
of the nineteenth country. The world has changed, too. It has become more
complex and increasingly specialized. There is much more to know in every
field. It is not only the scientist and the computer expert who need
special training now, but also the government official and the business
manager. Besides, a rapid increase in the number of college graduates has
made the competition for jobs much greater than it used to be. The one
best qualified, the expert, wins.

People are happy with developments in medicine. Then they worry about
the increased number of births. Scientists make great advances in
agricultural chemistry, greatly increasing our food supply. Then our
rivers become so polluted that we cannot even swim in them. We are happy
with the developments in air transportation and impressed by the great
airplanes. Then we are frightened by the horrors of air crash or air war.
We are excited by the fact that space can now be entered. But we will
undoubtedly see the other side there, too.

Finally, there is safety in numbers at communal roosts since there will
always be a few birds awake at any given moment to give the alarm. But
this increased protection is partially counteracted by the fact that
mass roosts attract predators and are especially vulnerable if they are
on the ground. Even those in trees can be attacked by birds of prey. The
birds on the edge are at greatest risk since predators find it easier to
catch small birds perching at the margins of the roost.

by bouncing high-frequency sounds off objects, it interests scientists in many
disciplines. Echolocation serves the bat as a substitute for vision in the
perception of near and moderately near objects.
