(ANS) Many nations have harvest festivals and Thanksgiving days, while many other cultures observe the veneration of ancestors, but no one has anything quite like the Korean Chusok. Historians tell us that the Chusok festival originated during the reign of the third king of the Silla Kingdom nearly 2,000 years ago. Chusok involves many things. It is an offering of thanks to heaven for the harvest, an appeal for the good fortune of another harvest in the next year, and an offering of sacrifices to one's family ancestors for all they did for the clan and family. In addition, of course, there are family gathering, much hearty eating, and such activities as the circle dance in the light of the full harvest moon.

Benjamin Franklin once worked as a printer.
From his work, he realized how difficult it was to make books.
However, he really enjoyed reading and wanted to get as many books as he could.
Franklin came up with a good idea - to set up a club where people could share their books.
At last, fifty members joined the club in 1732.
The club members were allowed to take the books home with them.
This club, called Franklin's Club, is said to be America's first circulating library.

Finding evidence doesn't always mean a criminal will be convicted.
Proving that a person is guilty or innocent of a crime is the job of lawyers.
One of the most famous lawyers of all time was Clarence Darrow.
Darrow was very famous in America around the start of the twentieth century.
He often defended people who were thought to be guilty and took on many unpopular cases.
In particular, he defended poor people who usually would not be able to afford a good lawyer.
During trials, he was a great speaker and argued very well.
He won many cases, even when the evidence was against him.

As many factories started to be built and cities grew, there were more and more jobs in city areas.
As more people moved to cities for the jobs, they needed places to live in.
Soon houses gave way to apartment buildings.
Also, to provide goods and services for so many people, new businesses grew up in the cities.
These new businesses also needed space, and unused land was hard to find.
When most of the land was taken up, builders started to build in the only direction left¡ªup! This is why skyscrapers were first built in the cities.

After many years, critical attention has finally been paid to the portion of the Miss America pageant called the swimsuit competition.
Thankfully, people are beginning to complain about this event.
In 1996, a telephone poll was conducted to determine if the swimsuit competition should remain.
Although the majority of callers voted to keep it, a good portion was critical and argued that the swimsuit competition should be eliminated.
The question will undoubtedly be raised again, and the next time the answer may well be different.
Let's hope so, because this portion of the pageant only lowers the dignity of women.

Credit card misuse remains at an alarmingly high level.
It is a cause not only of personal tragedies, but also of more serious social problems.
But how can we deal with this situation?
Whatever solution we choose, it must focus on changing consumers' spending habits for the better.
Up to now, people have been encouraged to use credit cards for various reasons.
This was good for those who used their cards wisely, but many have taken on large debts as a result.
Now is the time, therefore, to emphasize sensible individual credit card use.
Various financial support programs can be helpful in this, but unless consumers spend within their means, there can be no solution.

Many traditional parents measure their success in bringing up their children in terms of how well they control them.
These fathers and mothers feel that only with strong parental control is it possible to raise ¡°good kids.¡±
As more and more people are coming to realize, however,
such parent-oriented child raising actually has a number of long-lasting negative effects on children.
Young people raised by controlling parents, first of all, grow up with a distorted self-image.
During childhood, emphasis has been placed on pleasing the parent,
and any negative behavior has been brought from the parent rejection not of the behavior but of the child as a person.

Life is unfair. Yet life is good.
Our ability to thoughtfully deal with the unfairness and build on the good can make the difference between a happy and unhappy life.
One reason so many of us cannot get out of pain easily is our tendency to think,
¡°That shouldn't have happened to me. That was unfair.¡±
When we allow such thinking to dominate our thoughts, we begin to bear resentments.

Only two harambee students in 1,000 will attend a university.
Why then do so many students continue to flock to harambee schools?

The seeds of most plants are very durable.
They often travel long distances and survive harsh weather before they finally take root in soil.
Grape seeds are one good example.
If left on the vine, grapes will dry up and become raisins.
The raisins will eventually drop off the vine, and some of the seeds will be driven into the soil by rain or by animals walking over them.
Many grapes are grown for wine, so they are picked from the vine when ripe.
They are then boiled or crushed to extract their juice.
The farmers then use whatever remains of the grapes as fertilizer.
Amazingly, many grape seeds survive the crushing and boiling.
When they are inside the soil, the grape seeds take root and grow.

I have heard so many good things about your camp from my friends.
I am eighteen years of age and a graduate of North Hills High School in Pittsburgh.
At present I am completing my first year at Temple University.
During the past seven summers I have gained invaluable experience through my dealings with children of all ages.
For five of these summers I was a camper at Camp Walden, Massachusetts.
I participated in all the camp activities and I was able to discover what qualities campers want most in their counselors.
For the last two seasons I was a counselor at the same camp.
If you feel that I measure up to your qualifications for the counselor,
I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know when and where I may meet you.

Will you have good luck if you carry a silver dollar?
Many people believe that carrying a certain coin can bring good luck.
Sometimes women wear a coin on a bracelet for luck.
A coin with a hole in it is supposed to be especially lucky in some countries.
This idea got started long ago, before coins were used.
People believed that a shell or a stone with a hole in it could keep away evil spirits.
Coins with a hole would do the same.
There are many other beliefs about how money can bring good luck:
a jar of pennies in the kitchen will bring good luck.
A coin in the bride's shoe at a wedding will lead to a happy marriage.

For the past half-century, those lucky enough to have been born in a rich country have had every prospect of growing richer.
On average, incomes in Britain, America and Japan have easily doubled over that time.
On top of this come the benefits of longer lives of better quality, thanks to advances in medicine
and to a plethora of consumer goods making living easier and more enjoyable.
You might even expect folks to be a great deal happier today than in the 1950s.
You would be wrong, according to many surveys taken in rich countries.
These tend to show that, once a country has lifted itself out of poverty,
further rises in income seem not to create a meaningful rise in the proportion of people who consider themselves as happy.

A strong, healthy body can do an amazing job of resisting disease.
There are many things you can do to keep your body healthy, such as eating proper foods.
Getting plenty of sleep is another good habit.
A tired, run-down body is like a car that needs a tune-up; it does not function efficiently.
Exercise is important in reducing stress and keeping the body healthy.
Regular, moderate exercise will relieve muscle tension, keep the muscles firm, and make the heart and blood vessels healthy.
Exercise, like sleep, makes the body function more efficiently.
People who exercise regularly can even strengthen their hearts.

Hundreds of celebrities fail to make a favorable impression because they don't listen attentively.
They are so much concerned with what they are going to say next that they do not keep their ears open.
Very important people have said that they prefer good listeners to good talkers,

And not only important people strongly desire a good listener, but ordinary folks do, too.

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

Many superstitions abound in Chinese culture about brooms.
The use of brooms should only be for cleaning the house, shop, etc.
Traditional Chinese culture holds that a broom is inhabited by a spirit, thus explaining why it should not be used for games, playing, etc.
The broom should not be used for cleaning the household gods or altar as this is disrespectful.
These objects are cleaned with a cloth or a special small brush.
During the Spring Festival, Chinese custom prohibits the use of the broom for three days from New Year's Day,

In a good many cases unnecessary timidity makes the trouble worse than
it need be. Public opinion is always more tyrannical towards those who
obviously fear it than towards those who feel indifferent to it.
A dog will bark more loudly and bite more readily when people are afraid
of him than when they treat him with contempt, and the human herd has
something of this same characteristic. If you show that you are afraid
of them, you give promise of good hunting, whereas if you show
indifference, they begin to doubt their own power and therefore tend to
let you alone.

The uncertain economic conditions of recent years have caused union and

Workers have always wanted to share in the profits when the company has
good times.
Now management representatives are saying, "Fine. We'll share the profits

Workers are having to decide whether they are willing to take the chance
of salary and benefit cuts in bad times. They are having to decide whether
job security is more important than other benefits.
In effect, they are having to decide whether they are willing and able to
pay the cost of sharing.

We cannot study the lives of great men without noticing how often an
apparent misfortune was for them an exceedingly fortunate thing.
If Walter Scott had not been crippled by disease as a child, he might
not have stayed in the country that made him a great poet and a romancer.
One hears of so many instances, indeed, of bad luck turning into good
that one sometimes wonders whether one ought not to be sorry for the
people to whom the apparently unlucky things happen.

Everybody in the world is seeking happiness¡ªand there is one sure way
to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn't
depend on outer conditions. It depends on inner conditions.
It isn't what you have or what you are or where you are or what you are
doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.
For example, two people may be in the same place, doing the same thing;
both may have about an equal amount of money and prestige¡ªand yet one
may be miserable and the other happy. Why? Because of a different mental
attitude. I saw just as many happy faces among the Chinese coolies
sweating and toiling in the devastating heat of China for seven cents
a day as I see on Park Avenue.
"Nothing is good or bad," said Shakespeare, "but thinking makes it so."
Abe Lincoln once remarked, "Most folks are about as happy as they make
up their minds to be."

Health is generally regarded as a private property. There have indeed been
slogans which have emphasized this, often inaccurately. It is not true, as
sometimes claimed, that "health is wealth." There are many healthy people
who are not wealthy and also the other way around.
Another slogan is to the effect that life is not worth living without good
health. Certainly it is true that good health contributes greatly to the
joy of living and should be preserved and cherished. At the same time there
are many handicapped persons who have been able to make a good life for
themselves and to set a notable example to their fellow human beings by
the courageous way in which they have faced and conquered disability,
disease, and suffering. Obviously it is foolish to sacrifice health
needlessly. It is just as unwise to lie down and give up when your health
is impaired.

When are we most creative? Some reporters looked at daily and monthly
records kept by many famous people such as Goethe and Charles Darwin.
These studies indicated that great artists, writers, musicians, and
scientists tend to have peaks of creativity every 7.6 months, followed
by a low period.
Moreover, the studies propose that high points of creativity come in a
longer seven-year pattern. Possibly, we all have high points and low
points in our creative cycles. This may be the reason why we have
"good days" or "bad days" at work, or do well or poorly on an exam.

There is no finer cure for backache, liver, stomach or intestinal problems than a mudbath, according to Professor Oren Mathenson of Newcastle University.
He says there is no need to go to a health club or spa.
You simply buy the right mud and fill the bath at home.
A warm mudbath relaxes the muscles and opens the skin pores to herbs millions of years old.
Mathenson states that the mud found in northern England has more than 300 different plants in a highly concentrated form and that their goodness is absorbed through the skin.
The only problem is getting the mud to go down the plughole after the bath.
Many of the mud packs which can be ordered from various health spas, however, come with instructions.

Many things, good and bad, can happen to us in our lives. Yet there are
days which are usually marked by some kind of special ceremony: the day
we are born, the day we get married, and the day we die. All human beings
are affected by these events, and all societies share common
characteristics. Marriage as well as birth is a time of joy. Death is a
time of sorrow. The only difference among societies is the way these
events are celebrated.

How often are we introduced to someone only to forget his or her name
moments later? In fact, many times we never knew the name. Today
introductions are made in an unclear manner so that it is very hard to
remember others' names. Forgetting people's names often means we do not
really care about them. When we know their names, we are saying, "You are
important. I remember you." A clear introduction should be made,
therefore, if you want to build good social relationships with others.

For the first three weeks, things ran smoothly. According to your
instruction, I watered the grass every day, before 10 a.m. or after 4
p.m. Also, Mom, I walked the dog four times a day just because you said
it was very important that she be out that many times -- I disagreed, as
you'll recall, but nonetheless I walked her. Yes I was a good boy. But
when Susan, your darling daughter, got home from summer camp, I had to
become a part-time parent. That's when the trouble all started.

In general, every achievement requires trial and error. A youth, we need
not feel ashamed of making mistakes in trying to find or win our place in
a social group. It is not easy to learn to fit into a group or to develop
a personality that helps us to fit in. It is somewhat like learning to
play a game like baseball or basketball. We can hardly expect to learn
without making a good many mistakes in the process.

It's late at night and neither one of us is sleeping
I can't imagine living my life after you're gone
Wondering why so many questions have no answers
I keep on searching for the reason
Why we went wrong
Where is our yesterday
You and I could use it right now
But if this is goodbye
* *
Just take my heart when you go
I don't have the need for it anymore
I'll always love you but you're too hard to hold
Just take my heart when you go
-
Here we are about to take the final step now
I just can't fool myself
I know there's no turning back
Face to face it's been an endless conversation
But when the love is gone
You're left with nothing but talk
-
I'd give my everything
If only I could turn you around
But if this is goodbye
-
* * repeat

Just take my heart

You know I won't forget
The times we shared together holding hands
And walking in the park
Sometimes we'll have to do it all again
We were so happy then
I have no regrets
Can't you tell from the look on my face
That I love you more today

The first time I looked into your eyes I cried
Do you remember the first time
When we fell in love
You looked into my eyes wiped the tears away
The first time when we fell in love

Although some time has passed
I still remember just like it was yesterday
But time is movin' fast
The love I have for you time won't ever change
I'll always feel the same now until the end

How can I just let you walk away
Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you
You're the only one who really knew me at all
-
How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave
'Cause we shared the laughter
and the pain and even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
-
So take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
There's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
-
Take a good look at me now
There's just an empty space
And you coming back to me
Is against all the odds
And that's what I got to take
-
I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all
-
So take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
There's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
-
Take a good look at me now
There's just an empty space
But to wait for you is all I can do
And that's what I've got to face
-
Take a good look at me now
'Cause I'll still be standing there
And you coming back to me is against all the odds
And that's what I got to take
-
Take a good look at me now
-
