7. 「여행은 길동무」라고 말하는 것처럼, 혼자서 여행을 하고 싶을 때가 있는 것이다.

[比較] journey, voyage, trip, travel, tour
journey는 육로를 이용한 「여행」을 뜻하는 점에서 해상여행을 뜻하는 voyage와 대립한다. 그렇기는 하지만 voyage가 선박만을 이용한 여행을 뜻하는 데 반해서 선박을 이용한 여행이 전 여행의 일부인 경우에는 journey를 쓸 수 있다. 「인생이란 나그네 길」과 통하는 표현으로 life's journey가 있는데, life's journey가 가장 일반적인 의미에서의 여행을 뜻함을 보여준다. trip이 반드시 출발점으로 돌아오는 여행을 뜻하는 데 반해서, journey는 반드시 출발점으로 돌아오는 것을 전제로 하지는 않는다는 점이다. trip은 거리의 장단이나 교통수단과 목적의 여하에 관계없이 가장 자유롭게 쓰이는 낱말이다.

danger는 가장 일반적인 말이며 손상(injury)· 해악(evil)이 일어날 가능성이 예상되지만, 반드시 닥쳐온다던가 모면할 수 없다던가 하는 것은 의미하지 않는다.
the danger of failing on icy walks(빙판 길에서 넘어질 위험)/ troubled by the danger that the manuscript might be lost/ Miners at work are always in danger.
peril은 보통 절박한 뜻이 danger보다 강하고, 더 큰 두려움을 초래하며, 상실과 손상의 가능성도 한층 높은 것을 의미한다.

When a mine caves in, the miners are in peril.(광산의 지반이 떨어지면 광부들은 큰 위험을 당한다.)
jeopardy는 보통 흔히 쓰이지 않는 말이고, 본질적으로는 peril과 같은 뜻이지만, 우연한 곤경에 처하는 것, 그리고 극도의 위험에 처하는 것을 강조한다.

hazard는 예기할 수는 있어도 피할 수 없는 또는 어떻게 손을 쓸 수 없는 위험을 가리키며 우연적인 요소를 강조한다.

risk는 hazard에 비해 자진해서 위험을 무릅쓰는 뜻을 품는 수가 많다.

The day races past us without our really being aware of it.

Just try looking at objects for at least five seconds.
You can do this when you're walking or looking out of the car.
You'll find that five seconds is a long time.
This slight increase in the time we take to observe things can increase our passion for life and the quality of life.

The seeds of most plants are very durable.
They often travel long distances and survive harsh weather before they finally take root in soil.
Grape seeds are one good example.
If left on the vine, grapes will dry up and become raisins.
The raisins will eventually drop off the vine, and some of the seeds will be driven into the soil by rain or by animals walking over them.

Bing Crosby writes of an experience he had while traveling by train through the
Southwest many years ago.
Our train was stopped, and we were told there'd be a wait, so I walked up and down
the track behind the train. The rear brakeman, a hard-bitten little Texan, was walking
up and down, too, swinging his lantern. He came up to me and said,"They tell me that
rascal Bim Crosland's aboard. They say he's quite a singer, but as far as
I'm concerned, Larry Ross could run him in a gopher hole."
I agreed with him and thought no more of it. In the morning, there came a knock
on our door. It was the brakeman. He eyed me with a twinkle and said, "You
hoaxed me, didn't you? You're Bim Crosland yourself! Just for that, you've got to
sign my book."
So I signed it:"Bim Crosland."

"Not at all, son" came the reply. "It's the only way to learn."
