[比較] pupil, student, scholar, disciple
pupil(생도)은 어리거나 전공 학과 때문에, 선생의 세밀한 감독 밑에 있는 이를 말한다. 영국에서 pupil이라고 하면, Eton, Harrow 같은 사립학교(public school, 대학 입학 예비 교육을 주로 하는 중·고등학교), 또는 미국의 고등학교(high school)에 해당하는 중등학교(secondary school)에 다니는 이를 가리킨다. 미국에서 pupil은 흔히 초등학교에 다니는 이에 한해 쓰인다. 나이 여하를 불문하고 전공학과 때문에 pupil이라고 불리는 이(주로 대학생)는, an art pupil, a music pupil처럼, 흔히 전공하는 학과 이름을 붙여 말한다.

student는 고등 교육 기관에 다니는 이를 말하지만, 미국에서는 고등학교의 학생도 가리키는 수가 있다.

이 뜻으로는 pupil과 동의어지만, 특별히 대학에서 장학금(scholarship)을 받고 있는 학업이 우수한 특대생을 가리킨다. 이 뜻으로는 미국에서보다는 영국에서 더 흔히 쓰이고, 미국에서는 흔히 장학금 명칭과 함께 쓰인다. 또한 scholar는 학문에 전심하는 이, 학식이 있는 이, 「학자」를 의미하며, 이것이 가장 일반적으로 쓰이는 현대적 뜻이다.
disciple은 a disciple of Jesus처럼 성서의 영향을 크게 받아서, 어원적인 pupil의 뜻으로는 영어에서는 별로 쓰이지 않는다. 때로 옛 시대와 관련해서, 또는 유머러스한 용법에서 쓰이지만, 그런 경우에도 스승의 가르침에 대한 헌신적인 신봉의 뜻을 품고 있다.

replace는 지금은 잃어버린, 가버린, 깨뜨린, 낡은 물건(또는 사람)의 자리에 다른 물건(또는 사람)을 두는 것, 「～의 자리를 차지하다」(take the place of), 「～의 뒤를 잇다」(succeed)를 뜻한다.
Mr. Kim will replace Mr. Lee as president./ We replace defective tubes.
또한 「제자리에 돌리다, 돌려주다」(restore, return)를 말한다.

supplant는 「대신 들어앉다」또는 폭력·음모·술책 따위로 남을 내쫓고 그 자리를 차지하는 것을 말한다.

supersede는 「대신하다」또는 대신 사용한 것이 개량된 것임을 암시한다. 우수한 것, 더 현대적인 것으로 대신하는 뜻을 품고 있다.

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14)
MPEG-4 Part 14, formally, ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003, is a multimedia container
format standard specified as a part of MPEG-4. It is most-commonly used to
store digital audio and digital video streams, especially those defined
by MPEG, but also can be used to store other data such as subtitles and
still images. Like most modern container formats, MPEG-4 Part 14 allows
streaming over the Internet. The official filename extension for MPEG-4
Part 14 files is .mp4, thus the container format is often referred to
simply as MP4.
