Hang in there라는 말은 글자 그대로 해석해 보면 '그 안에
매달려 있으라' 의역해 보면 '어려움을 참고 기다려라'가 되는
것이다. 같은 뜻으로 Hang on도 쓸 수 있고 Hang tough도 쓸
수 있다. 또 Tough it out이나 Stick it out도 역시
'어려움을 참고 기다려라'는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
hang on은 전화를 끊지 않고 '기다린다.'즉 hold on과 같은
뜻으로 쓰인다. hang around란 말도 있는데 이것은 stick around와

는 독선적인 특권 부유층의 사람들을 비꼬아 표현하는 것이다.
특히 fat cat은 정치인이나 사업가를 가리킨다.
이것은 제1차 세계대전시 큰 돈을 벌어 부자가 된 사람을 가리켜
사용된데서 유래한다.
" Clear the coast! " 는 "길 비켜!"이고 "The coast is clear." 는
"때는 지금이다." 라고 합니다.
어떤 이유에서 이런 표현이 나왔나요?

서양에서는 일찌기 바다를 통한 활동이 왕성해서 바이킹족이 전유럽
의 해안을 벌벌 떨게 했는가 하면 콜룸부스의 세계 탐험도 이루어졌고
전쟁시에도 해안을 통한 적의 침입이 이루어지기도 했습니다.
그래서 '바다는 세계와 통하는 길'이라는 인식이 깊게 자리잡고 있었
을 것입니다.
위의 두 표현은 그런 맥락에서 상통하고 있지요.
해안을 통해 침입하려고 벼르고 벼르던 적들이 철통같은 수비를 하고
있는 상대를 보고 후퇴해서 돌아가면 해안을 지키던 군사들은 "위험은
사라졌다!" 하고 소리를 지르겠지요.
바로 이 말이 "The coast is clear!" 랍니다.
그런데 이 말은 근대로 넘어오면서 밀수꾼에 의해 더욱 널리 번지게
됩니다.
해안의 경계를 맡던 경찰들이 사라진 후 잽싸게 물건을 들여오면서 하
는 말인즉, " 이 때다! " 했던 것이죠.
그리고 'clear'는 동사로 쓰여서 '깨끗이 없애다,치워버리다' 의 뜻이
므로 " Clear the coast. " 는 "길을 비켜라." 는 의미도 되지요.

이것은 미국의 여론조사 기관인 Ac Neilson 사에 의해 개발된 TV시청률
조사수단이다. 과학적인 표본 추출방식에 의해 뽑힌 일정수의 가구의 TV
수상기에다 people meter를 갖다 장치하면 중앙의 main computer에 그 가
구들의 수상기 작동방식이나 채널변환등이 초단위로 자동기록이 되면서
그 기록을 통해서 시청률 통계를 내게 되는 것. people meter의 특징은
가족구성원이가지고 있는 개별적인 버튼을 통해서 시청자의 성별, 연령
별, 직업별 집계가 가능하다는 것이다. 선진국에서는 이미 20여년전부터
이 people meter 를 통해서 시청률조사를 실시해 왔는데 우리나라에서는
1991년 12월부터 이방법을 이용한 시청률조사가 이루어지고 있다. 이 밖
에도 시청률조사에는 전화인터뷰나 일기식 조사방식, 낱낱이 사람에게 찾
아가는 방법 또 passive meter 이런 방법이 있다. 이에 반해서 라디오 청
취률조사는 이 people meter를 이용한 방법은 동원되지 않고 있고 라디오
청취률조사는 조사기관에 따라 조금씩 차이가 있는 반면에 people meter
를 사용하는 TV시청률은 비교적 정확하고 공정하게 그 시청률을 조사할
수 있는 특징을 가지고 있다.
