After parking our car at my daughter's apartment late Saturday night,
I noticed the one next to it had its lights on. I left a note on the
windshield with the telephone number, saying I'd come down and give
the battery a boost if needed.
About 3 a.m. the phone rang and a man said, "I'm sorry to bother you,
but I read your note and sure would appreciate a boost."
I turned on my car lights to see what we were doing, and after I got
him started, he offered to pay me. "No thanks," I replied. "Just
help some other motorist sometime."
When I went to my car on Sunday morning, I discovered I had left
my lights on, and the battery was dead.
지난 토요일 밤 딸의 아파트에 차를 세운 후 옆에 있는 차에 불이 켜져
있는 것을 보았다. 나는 전화번호와 함께 필요하면 내려와서 밧데리를
충전해 주겠다는 쪽지를 차창에 끼워놓았다.
새벽 3시경 전화 벨이 울리며 한 남자가 말했다. "폐를 끼쳐 죄송하지만
댁의 쪽지를 읽었습니다. 밧데리 충전을 받을 수 있으면 감사하겠습니다."
우리가 작업을 하는 동안 내 차의 불을 켜놓았다. 그가 차를 움직일 수
있게 되었을 때 그는 내게 돈을 지불하려 했다. "괜찮습니다," 나는
대답했다. "언제든 다른 사람을 도와주도록 하세요."
일요일 아침 내 차로 갔을 때, 불을 켜놓아서 밧데리가 나간 것을 발견했다.
One evening my husband's golfing buddy drove his secretary home after she
had imbibed a little too much at an office reception. Although this was
an innocent gesture, he decided not to mention it to his wife, who tended
to get jealous easily.
Later that night my husband's friend and his wife were driving to a
restaurant. Suddenly he looked down and spotted a high-heel shoe half
hidden under the passenger seat. Not wanting to be conspicuous, he waited
until his wife was looking out her window before he scooped up the shoe
and tossed it out of the car. With a sigh of relief, he pulled into the
restaurant parking lot. That's when he noticed his wife squirming around
in her seat. "Honey," she asked, "have you seen my other shoe?"
남편의 골프 친구는 어느 날 비서를 집까지 태워주었다. 그녀가 사무실 회식
때 과음했기 때문이었다. 흉이 될 일은 아니지만 강짜가 심한 아내에게 말하지
않기로 했다.
그날 밤늦게 남편의 친구 부부는 차를 타고 레스토랑에 가고 있었다. 문득
아래를 보니 앞좌석 밑에 하이힐 하나가 살짝 보였다. 눈에 띄지 않기 위해
아내가 창 밖을 바라볼 때까지 기다렸다가 신발을 집어 차창 밖으로 던졌다.
안심을 하고 그는 레스토랑 주차장으로 들어섰다. 그때 아내가 자리에서
두리번거리는 것을 보았다. "여보," 그녀가 물었다. "내 신발 한 짝 못봤어요?"
