Anteaters are solitary animals, and when two are seen together it is most
likely that they are mother and child. Anteaters feed almost exclusively on
termites, ants, and soft-bodied grubs. These types of insects build very tough
nests, and the anteater must use its sharp front claws to tear holes in them.
Once this is done it pushes its muzzle in and probes the cavities of the nest
with its eight-to-ten-inch tongue. When the food is located, the anteater
entraps it with its sticky saliva, making sure the nest is wiped clean.
개미잡이는 군거하지 않는 동물이다. 그러므로 두 마리가 함께 있는 것이 보인다면
그것은 십중팔구 어미와 새끼일 것이다. 개미잡이는 거의 전적으로 흰 개미, 그리고
말랑말랑한 유충을 잡아먹고 산다. 이러한 종류의 곤충들은 매우 튼튼한 집을 짓기
때문에 개미잡이는 날카로운 앞 발톱을 이용해서 그러한 집에 구멍을 뚫어야 한다.
일단 구멍을 뚫으면 개미잡이는 주둥아리를 그 구멍 안으로 들이밀고 8내지 10인치
길이의 혀로 그 집속을 탐색한다. 먹이의 위치를 찾아내게 되면, 개미잡이는
끈적끈적한 침으로 그 먹이를 사로잡으며, 반드시 그 집속에 있는 먹이를
깨끗이(모조리) 핥아먹는다.
