오래전 부터 쓰여졌는데 유래는 정확히 알려지지 않았지만 ...
짐작하기를 미국 개척 초기에 배인들이 인디언들과 거래를 할때
당시 귀중한 물건이었던 buck skin(사슴가죽)을 돈 대신 사용하지
않았나 추측 될 뿐입니다.(그러므로 skin역시 $의 의미가.....?)

In the traditional Korean housing '사랑방' was the main room for
the head man of the household where he often studied and received
guests.

을 맞이하는 방이기도 하지요.
'사랑방' was usually furnished with a low writing table, bookshe-
lves, stationary chests, and a smoking tray.
사랑방에는 주로 앉아서 읽은 책상, 책꽂이, 필기 도구 상자, 그리고
담배함이 구비되었습니다.
