◆ naive, ingenuous, artless, unsophisticated
모두 "순진하다, 천진난만하다"등의 의미를 갖고 있는 말들이나 다음과 같이
미묘한 차이를 갖고 있습니다.
1) naive : 순진하고 천진난만한 그리고 때로 어리석을 만큼 세상물정을 모른다는
뜻으로 사용됩니다. naive한 사람이라고 해서 반드시 무식하고 어리석은 사람을
말하는 것은 아닙니다.

foil 이라고 부르지요. 그런데 이 foil은 보통 진지한 인물이기 때문
에 straight man이라고 부릅니다. 여기서 straight는 '진지한'을 의미
하지요. 참고로 이 straight가 이런 뜻으로 쓰인 표현에는 keep a st-
raight face 라는 말이 있는데 이 말은 진지한 표정을 유지하다, 어떤
일에 대해서 웃음을 참다 라는 말이 됩니다. 일반적으로 연극에서 가
식이 없는, 어떤 효과를 노리지 않는 것을 straight 라고 합니다. 신
문 잡지에서는 있는 그대로 객관적으로 쓰는 글을 A straight story라
고 하지요. 참고로 우리나라에서는 희극 배우를 흔히 gagman 이라고
부르는데 원래 gag라고 하는 말은 '익살, 말장난'을 뜻하고요. gagman
은 희극 배우를 위해서 익살스런 문구를 써주는 작가를 가르키는 말이지요.
