「공적인 허가」를 나타낼 때는 permit가 쓰이고, allow는 permit보다는 일반적인 어휘로, 「…할 권리를 인정한다, …하는 것을 막지는 않는다」는 뜻으로도 쓰인다. let는 가장 일상적인 어휘로 허가나 동의를 뜻하기도 하지만, 「…을 막을 수가 없었다」는 뜻을 나타내기도 한다.

[比較] order, command, instruction, direction, directive, injunction
order는 가장 포괄적인 말로 법률에서는 법정·판사의 「결정·명령」을 의미한다.
ex) He paid alimony by court order.
군사용어로는(보통 복수형으로 사용된다) 군 당국에서 보내는 명령·통고를 가리키고, 때로는 「임무·부서의 지정」을 가리키기도 한다.
command는 옛날에 군주의 요청·희망(wishes)이 commands였고, 이 뜻은 지금 영국에서의 command performance(왕의 초청에 응해서 행하는 연주·상연, 어전 연주·상연)에 남아 있다. 군주의 명(commands)은 자주 wishes라고 표현되었다. 오늘날 command는 대개 군사 용어로 쓰인다. 군대의 소대 교련 등에서 큰 소리로 일정한 명령을 내리는 「호령, 명령」, 한 사령관 하에 있는 「휘하 부대, 관할 구역, 사령부」, 그리고 「지휘, 지휘권」 등을 의미한다.
ex) I'm in command here.
instruction은 보통 복수형으로 쓰여, 「명령」(order), 「지시, 훈령」(direction)이다.
ex) Please read the instructions before assembling the antenna.
direction은 instruction과 거의 마찬가지이고, 언제나 복수형으로 쓰이며, 보통 어떤 목적지에 이르는 데에 거쳐야 할 통로·노선(route)에 관한 지시를 가리키는 말로 쓰인다.
ex) If he follows my directions, he can't miss Rockefeller Center.
directive는 새로운 명사로서, 「당국의 지령·지시」(authoritative instruction or direction)를 말한다.
ex) A directive was issued by the Secretary of State on conduct of Foreign Affairs Officers.
injunction은 보통 법률 용어로서, 사람에게 어떤 특별한 일을 하라고(흔히는 하지 말라고) 요구하는, 재판소가 내리는 명령(강제 또는 금지)을 가리킨다. 그러나 일반적인 「명령, 지령」의 뜻으로도 쓰일 수 있다.
ex) In spite of all injunctions of secrecy, the news had spread.

It's open season on drunk drivers 음주 운전자 수난시대야.
* open season이란 원래 사냥 용어로서, 일년 중 어느 일정한
기간에 지정된 새나 짐승을 사냥할 수 있도록 하는 것이다.
그러니까 open season에 사냥해도 되는 짐승은 그 기간에
집중적으로 사냥군의 밥이 되는 것이다. 이러한 뜻의
open season이 일상 회화에서는 누구를 마구잡이로 잡아들이거나
누구를 집중적으로 단속 또는 공격하는 그런 뜻으로 쓰인다.
그러므로 위의 말은 '음주 운전자 일제 단속'이란 말이다.
어떤 범죄를 집중적으로 '단속'하는 것을 crack down on∼라고 한다.

* 미국에서는 공중전화 다이얼 버튼에 영문자(Alphabet)가 있다
는데 어떻게 이용을 하나요?
=> 다이얼 버튼 '2'에서부터 '9'까지 각각 영문자('Q'와 'Z'는
제외) 3자씩이 지정되어 있습니다.('2'에 'ABC', '3'에 'DEF'
...이런 식으로) 그런데, 국번 3자리 중에서 앞의 두자리가
본래 영문자로 되어있었다고 합니다. 거기에서 유래하여 숫자
버튼 밑에 영문자를 넣었던 것입니다. 그러나 지금은 영문자
국번을 사용하지 않고 전화번호를 쉽게 기억하기 위한 수단으
로 이용합니다.

* 공휴일에 대하여
=> 미국은 공휴일을 일요일과 겹치지 않도록 요일별로 지정한다
몇월의 몇째주로 무슨 요일로 정하는 방식이 일반적.
예) Easter : 부활절 - 3월21일이후 보름달다음 첫 일요일
Memorial day : 5월의 마지막 월요일
Labor Day : 9월의 첫번째 월요일
Thanksgiving Day : 11월의 4번째 목요일
따라서 일요일과 겹칠 염려가 없다.
요일로 지정하지 않는 경우 토요일, 일요일과 겹치게 되더라
도 앞당기거나 늦춰서 조정한다. 이땐 달력엔 예전과 다르게
기념된다 하여 Reserved, Observed라는 말을 붙여 표시한다.
예로 President Day, Washington's Birthday가 일요일과 겹
치면 달력엔 그 임시일을 위 용어로 표기하게 된다.
그러나 꼭 월요일이 공휴일이 지정되는 것은 아니다.

요즘 책 뒷면의 bar code 옆에 "ISBN 89..."가 씌여있던데
'ISBN'은 무슨 뜻이며, 숫자는 무얼 의미합니까?

법정관리란 기업이 자력으로는 도저히 회사를 살리기 어려울 만큼 빚이
많아졌을 때 법원에서 지정한 제3자가 자금, 기업활동 전반을 대신
관리하는 것을 말합니다. 보통 법정관리를 신청할 때는 대개 기존의
모든 채권 채무를 동결시키는 재산보전처분도 동시에 신청하기 때문에

Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose
general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a
country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take

homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be
learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the
