Tragic Loss of Lives : 비통한 인명 손실
Nearly 50 military personnel were killed in landslides triggered by
heavy rains that pounded the central part of the peninsula Friday. They
were neither engaged in a military operation nor on a field exercise. The
young lives would not have been sacrificed if military commanders paid
a little more attention to the safety of their men.
금요일 한반도의 중부 지방을 강타한 폭우로 말미암은 산사태로 인해 거
의 50명의 군 병력이 목숨을 잃었다. 그들은 전투 중에 있던 것도 아니고
군사훈련중에 있던 것도 아니었다. 만약 군부대 지휘관들이 자기 부하들의
안전에 대해서 좀더 관심을 기울였었다면 젊은 생명들은 희생당하지 않았을
것이다.

right face
영어는 한 단어에 여러 가지 뜻이 담겨 있는 다의어다.특히 주의할
것은 품사에 따라 뜻이 달라진다는 것이다. fat이 형용사로는 (뚱뚱
한) 이란 뜻을 갖지만 명사로는 (지방)을 뜻하고 불을 의미하는 fire
가 동사로는 (해고하다)되는 식이다.
얼마 전 뉴스위크에서 공화당의 승리로 끝난 미국 중간선거 결과를
커버 스토리로 다루면서 RIGHT FACE라고 제목을 달았다. 얼른 직역하
면 (올바른 얼굴). 다듬으면 (적당한 인물)정도가 될까. 그러나
right face에는 각기 (우측)과 (향하다)라는 뜻도 있다는 점을 생각
한다면 (우향우)란 의미를 떠올리수 있을 것이다. right에는 보수라
는 의미도 있으므로 RIGHT FACE는 결국 보수공화당이 승리함으로써
미국 정치가 (보수화,우경화)되리라는 뜻으로 쓰인 것이다.

Following the completion of candidate registrations with the
election management committees nationwide, hopefuls for the
June 4 local elections officially launched intensive
campaigns. With the heated electioneering climate, the
political parties have gone all out to support their
candidates running for mayor, provincial governor, local
administrator and councilor positions across the country.
전국 선거관리위원회에서 후보등록이 끝나고 오는 6월 4일 지방
선거 후보들은 공식적으로 본격적인 선거 운동에 들어갔다. 과열
선거 양상을 보이고 있는 가운데 각 정당들은 전국의 시장,
도지사, 지역 단체장 및 시의원 후보들에 대한 전폭적인 지원에
나섰다.
지방 선거에 대해 우리말 신문이라도 읽었던 분이라면, candidate
registrations는 후보 등록, election management committees 는
선거 관리 위원회, hopefuls는 candidates와 같은 후보, local
elections는 지방 선거, electioneering climate은 선거 운동
분위기, provincial governor는 도지사, local administrator는
기초 단체장, councilor는 시의원 이라는 걸 감잡을 수 있을
겁니다.

In this regard, the last local elections, especially the
contests for Seoul mayor and Kyonggi governor, indicated a
solid electoral preference for the reform platforms of the
ruling National Congress for New Politics. Those electoral
constituencies cover over 45 percent of the country's
population. Public opinion is also for overall social change
and the *forces of the future as against the status quo and
the forces of the past.
이런 관점에서 최근 지방선거 특히 서울 시장과 경기도 지사
경선에서 여당인 새정치국민회의의 개혁정책을 지지한다는 결과가
나왔다. 국민회의가 승리한 수도권 선거구는 전국 인구수의
45%이상을 차지한다. 또한 여론은 전면적인 사회변화를 지지했고
젊은 세대들은 현상유지와 기득권 세력을 거부했다.

실제 1994년 대통령·국회의원·지방선거일이 모두 법정화된 이후 30여년 동안 선거일정이 바뀐 사례는 없다.
In fact, there has been no case of changing the election schedule for over 30 years after the dates of presidential, parliamentary, and regional election were all legalized in 1994.
