워크아웃(Workout): 금융기관이 거래기업의 '군살'즉 과다한 자산과
채무등을 없애줌으로써 재무구조를 건전하게 바꿔주는 작업.
미국의 여배우 제인폰다가 80년대 헬스클럽을 운영하면서 여성의
군살빼기운동을 '워크아웃'이라 부른데서 유래했다고 한다.
기업경영에서 이말을 처음 사용한 사람은 미국의 제네랄 일렉트릭 잭 웰치
회장으로 알려져 있다.
워크아웃은 기업에 돈을 주더라도 무조건 지원하는 것이 아니라 근본적
체질개선처방을 함께 내리기 때문에 협조융자(Bail-out)와는 다르다. 퇴출을
뜻하는 아웃(out)이란 단어 때문에 기업들로부터 오해를 사고 있어
금융감독위원회는 최근 워크아웃을 '기업개선작업'으로 통일해 사용하고
있다.
금융기관을 통한 기업구조조정과 관련, 의미가 가장 폭넓고 핵심적인
용어로 기업과 금융기관이 서로 협의해 진행하는 일련의 구조조정 과정과
결과를 지칭한다.
기업이 단기부채 때문에 어려움을 겪고 있지만 중장기적으로 자생력이
있으면 여러 부채를 만기가 긴 하나의 부채로 통합(Consolidation)한다.
기업의 자금사정과 회생 가능성에 따라 지급유예(Grace Qeriod)기간을
두거나 이자삭감(Interest Relief) 또는 부채삭감(Debt Relief)을 할 수도
있다.
