현상을 Doorknocker syndrome, 우리 말로 하면 '중류의식 증후군'
이라고 합니다.
Doorknocker는 문에 달린 쇠장식 같은 것을 말하는 것인데요.
방문객의 내방을 알리는 용도로 쓰이는 이 쇠장식이 달린
집에 살려면 어느 정도 경제 능력이 있어야 되겠죠.
그런 이유로 영국에서는 Doorknocker이 붙어있는 집에
산다는 것이 중류계층의 상징으로 여겨왔습니다.
풍요의 시대라는 요즘에는 노동계층에서도 이 Doorknocker이
달린 집에 사는 사람들이 많아 졌구요. 스스로를 중산층이라고
여기는 사회 풍조가 두드러지게 되었죠.
아뭏든 Doorknocker Syndrome이란 말은 중류층을 문에 다는
쇠장식에 비유한 재미있는 신조어입니다.
