→ Have supper나 come to dinner의 경우 관사를 붙이지 않는다. 그러나 어떤 특정한 저녁 식사를 말할 경우, 예를 들면, That was a delicious supper 인 경우는 관사를 붙인다. (Go to [school]과 visit [the school]의 관사의 유무도 위와 마찬가지이다.)

친구를 보고 What are you going to do this weekend?
'이번 주말에 뭘 할거니?'라고 물었을 때 It's up for grabs.라고
대답했다면 '아직 뭘 할지 잘 모르겠어'란 뜻이 된다.
up for grabs는 어떤 자리가 '비었다(open)' 는 뜻도 되고,
'누구든지 이기는 자의 차지다'는 뜻도 된다.
예컨대 The manager's position is up for grabs.라고 하면
'매니저 자리가 비었다.'는 말이 되고
Twenty-four Senate seats are up for grabs in this election.은
'이번 선거에서 24개의 상원 의석은 누구든지 이기는 자의 차지가 된다.'는
말이다. It's a toss-up. 이란 말도 있는데 toss-up은 동전을 던져
무엇을 결정하는 것을 가리키므로 '예측을 불허한다.' 또는
'승부의 가능성은 반반씩이다.' 정도의 뜻이 된다.

- 평생에 한 번밖에 없는 기회를 놓쳤다.
* There goes∼는 미국인들이 무엇을 놓쳤거나 무슨 일을 망쳤을 때
'∼하긴 다 틀렸구나' 또는 '∼은 이제 물 건너 갔구나'라는 뜻으로
흔히 쓰는 말이다. 주말에는 집에서 좀 편히 쉬려고 생각하고 있는데
아내가 친정 어머니의 생신이니 처가에 꼭 가야 한다고 했다고 하자.
이럴 때 남편의 입에서는 There goes my weekend! 즉
'주말에 쉬기는 다 틀렸구나!'란 말이 절로 튀어나올 것이다.

* quarterback은 football의 중요한 포지션 이다. 그러면
Monday morning quarterback은 주말에 풋볼 경기를 보고 월요일
아침에 그 경기에 대해서 이러니 저러니 비판을 하는 사람을
가리키는 말이다. 이것이 일상 회화에서는 '이미 지나간 일을
가지고 이러쿵 저러쿵 시비를 거는 사람'을 가리키게 되었다.
이것을 동사로 쓰면 '지나간 일을 두고 시비한다'는 뜻이 된다.
이와 같은 뜻으로 second-guess란 말도 많이 쓴다.
armchair general이란 말도 있는데 '안락의자에 앉은 장군'이란
뜻이니까 실제 경험은 없으면서 이론적으로만 아는 체 하는
사람을 가리키는 말이다.
