[比較] smell, scent, odor, aroma
smell은 가장 일반적인 말이며 가장 색채가 없는 말이고, 냄새의 근원·질 따위를 꼬집어 말하지 않아도 좋은 경우에 쓰기 적당한 말이다.
I like the smells in the country after a rain.
또한 냄새를 한정하는 수식어와 같이 쓰기에 좋은 말이다.

scent는 엄밀한 용법에서는, 냄새를 맡아보는 물체에서 발산하는 기를 말한다. scent는 후각 신경에 주는 인상에 중점이 있지 않고, 후각 신경에 이르는, 물체에서 발산하는 희미한 기에 중점이 있다.

odor는 보통 짙은 냄새를 암시해서, scent의 경우처럼 미묘하고 고도로 날카로운 후각이 필요함을 암시하지 않는 것이 보통이다.
The odors of the kitchen clung to her clothes.
또한 odor는 흔히 「향기로운 냄새」이며 불쾌한 냄새는 a rank odor, a foul odor처럼, 형용사로 수식된다. 특히 형용사 odorous는 쾌적한 향기만을 가리킨다. 반의어는 malodorous이다.
aroma는 본래는 향미료(spice)를 의미한다. 옛 종교 작품에, The three Maries brought aromas for to smear our Lord.(세 분 마리아는 우리 주님께 바를 향료를 가지고 왔다.)의 예가 있다. aroma는 odor보다 직접적이면 톡 쏘는 듯한 날카로운 냄새의 뜻이 강하다. 반드시 향기로운 냄새를 가리키지는 않지만 불쾌한 냄새를 가리키는 일은 없다. 또한 aroma는 무슨 상미할 물건을 암시하는 것이 보통이어서, 후각과 미각에 호소하는, 확대되어 사람의 미감에 호소하는 물건에 쓰일 수 있다.
