Now the steps to further widen the leeway for Korea's
economic maneuvering should include an early repayment of the
IMF's short-term loans with high interest. Of the total 16.8
billion dollars borrowed from the IMF, 2.8 billion, with 8
percent interest and a date of *maturity in December, must
first be redeemed. If the 40 billion dollars in foreign
reserves can be maintained until the end of this year, the
target for early repayment should be the 2 billion dollars
with maturities in January and February next year.

이제 경제계획에 있어서 한국의 입지를 보다 확대시키기 위한
조처로 고금리 IMF 단기부채의 조기상환이 포함되어야 한다.
IMF에서 빌린 총 168억 달러와 8%의 이자 28억 달러는 12월이
만기로 제일 먼저 상환되어야 한다. 만약 400억 달러의
외환보유고가 올해 말까지 유지될 수 있다면 내년 1월과 2월에
만기가 돌아오는 20억 달러도 조기상환 목표에 포함되어야 한다.

투자자가 만기 전에 조기상환청구권을 행사할 경우 발행사는 원금에 해당 기간까지의 약정이자를 더한 금액을 돌려줘야 한다.
If an investor exercises his or her right to claim early repayment before maturity, the issuer must return the principal plus the agreed interest up to that period.

은행권 관계자는 "통상적으로 ELS는 3∼6개월 주기로 조기상환이 도래한다"면서 "기존 투자자들이 환매하면 새로운 투자자들이 가입하면 되는 것이기 때문에 괜찮을 것"이라고 설명했다.
