* Boarder : 하숙생 ?
원래 Board는 얇은판을 나타내죠. Board앞에 형용사를 붙여서 여러가
지를 나타낼 수가 있죠. 예를 들어서 칠판은 Chalk board, 판지를
Cardboard라고 하고요. 다리미판을 Ioning board라고 하죠.
한편 예전에는 식탁을 Table이라고 하지 않고 Board라고 지칭했다고
합니다. 특히 만찬식에 쓰이는 길쭉한 식탁을 Board라고 불렀는데 아
마 생김새가 판자모양하고 비슷해서 그랬겠죠. 바로 식탁을 뜻하는
Board에서 하숙생을 뜻하는 Boarder라는 단어가 나온 것입니다.
원래 영어에서 하숙하다는 Lodge죠. 그래서 하숙하는 집을 Lodging
House 또는 Lodging House에서 보통 식사가 제공되는데 이를 Boarder
라고 하기도 합니다.
