alliance(결연, 동맹)는 특히 가족이나 국가의 이해 관계의 결합에 쓰인다. 또한 일반 용법에서는 조직된 것이든 아니든 서로 다른 단체들 사이의 상호 이익을 위한 관계에도 사용된다.

permit는 글로 적은 당국의 허가서, 면허, 인가를 말한다.

leave는 미국에서는 일을 쉬는 허가(permission to be absent from duty)라는 특별한 뜻으로 쓰인다.
ex) He got the usual two weeks' leave before going overseas.
전에는 leave가 「허가」를 의미하는 이 여러 말 중에서 가장 일반적인 말로 사용되었었다.
ex) May I have leave to speak?
그러나 약간 예스러운 데가 있고, 그 때문에 딱딱한 느낌이 있다. 그래서 고문체인 by your leave(실례하오나)는 얼마 전까지만 해도 please와 같은 뜻을 나타냈지만, 지금은 그 딱딱한 어감 때문에 주로 아이러니칼한 경우에 사용되고 있다.

teach는 배우는 이에게 지식, 설명, 훈련을 주고, 배울 것과 방법을 보여주고, 그 공부를 지도해서 무엇인가 배울 수 있게 하는 것을 강조한다.

instruct는 보통 어느 특별한 과목에 대해 조직적으로 필요한 지식을 넣어주는 것을 강조한다.

train은 ‘훈련하다’, 특히 현대 용법에서 조직적인 훈련, 연습 따위를 통해서, 어느 특별한 능력이나 기술을 발달시키거나 어떤 특별한 직업에 적응하도록 가르치는 뜻이 들어있다. 사람이나 동물에게도 쓰이는 말이다.

구두나 서면으로 ‘알리다’의 뜻에서 tell은 일반적인 말이며, inform(알리다, 통지하다)은 약간 격식을 차리는 딱딱한 말로, 한 사실이나 사정에 관한 지식을 어느 사람한테 직접 전하는 것을 강조한다.

관청계에서 inform이라고 하면, 정보, 지식의 일편을 주는 것뿐만 아니라, 그런 것을 알려 주었다는 것을 정보, 지식을 받는 이에게 통고하는 것까지도 말한다.

무슨 일을 inform한다면, 그저 알린다고 하는 경우보다 그 일이 한결 권위 있는 일이라고 보는 것이다. informed sources(권위 있는 소식통, 확실한 소식통)란 말은 신문에서 그저 소문(rumor, gossip)에 대한 완곡어로 쓰여지는 수가 흔하지만, 무슨 일을 단지 들은 사람보다는 믿을 만한 것이라고 일반적으 that this was their final notice.
acquaint를 ‘알리다’의 뜻으로 쓰는 것은 영국에서는 고문체이지만 미국에서는 표준적 용법이다.

'비가 억수로 내리다'는 말을 It is rainning cats and dogs 라고
하지요. 이 표현에는 재미있는 유래가 있지요. 옛날 그 하수도 시절이
좋지 않았던 시절에 폭우가 쏟아질 때면 개나 고양이가 빠져 죽는 일
이 많았다고 합니다. 비가 그치게 되면 길거리에는 죽은 개나 고양이
의 시체가 즐비하게 되었는데 그 모습이 마치 고양이와 개가 마치 비
와 함께 내린 것처럼 보일 지경이었다고 하지요. 또 어떤 사람들은 이
표현의 유래를 노르웨이의 신화와 연결을 짓는 사람도 있습니다. 신화
에 따르면 개는 폭우를 동반한 돌풍을 그리고 고양이는 비를 상징한다
고 하지요. 억수로 내리는 비를 인간과 친숙한 개와 고양이로 비유해
서 재미있게 표현한 'It is rainning cats and dogs'는 격식을 차리는
자리에서는 표현을 삼가하는게 좋고 그대신 정식으로 표현하자고 하면
It's rainning very heavily. 라고 얘기하는 것이 좋겠지요. 또 어떤
분들은 rain cats and dogs를 개나 고양이가 싸우는 것에 비유해서 서
로 으르렁 거리는 것에 비유해서 비가 많이 내린 것을 표현할 때 이렇
게 표현한다고 이야기하는 사람도 있습니다.

After the team meeting with the OD, you should inform the petitioner of all problems
found as result of our review. You should state that the listing of problem areas is
advisory and that additional problems, if found after the petition is officially filed, will
