The longstanding South Korea-Japan dispute over the Tokdo islets
had strained bilateral relations early this year, once
threatening to abort a planned summit between President Kim
Young-sam and Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto.
독도영유권을 둘러싸고 오랫동안 있어왔던 한일간 분쟁은 올해초에도
양국관계를 경색시켜, 김영삼 대통령과 하시모토 日총리 사이에 예정

The summit meeting by President Kim Young-sam and Pakistani
Prime Minister Mohtrama Benazir Bhutto has imparted momentum to
the two countries' ties and is expected to accelerate mutual efforts to
expand cooperation in political, diplomatic and economic sectors. In their
meeting, the leaders of the two Asian countries have found a common
ground for increased international collaboration in the region and the
world community.
김영삼대통령과 파키스탄의 모트라마 베나지르 부토 수상간의 정상회담은
양국 관계에 새로운 전기를 가져왔으며 이를 계기로 앞으로 정치, 외교, 경
제분야의 협력 확대를 위한 공동 노력이 가속화 할 것이 예상된다. 이번의
회담에서, 두 아시아 국가의 정상은 지역과 세계 무대에서 국제 협력을 증

Topping the results of the summit talks at Chong Wa Dae on Monday
is perhaps their agreement on increased Korean investments in Pakistan
industry and infrastructure projects, namely energy, tourism, textile and
paper development and railway, port and airport construction. To
facilitate the cooperative program, Kim promised Bhutto to send a
high-powered delegation soon to explore investment opportunities in
Pakistan.
월요일에 열린 청와대 정상회담의 가장 중요한 결과는 아마도 파키스탄의
산업과 에너지, 관광, 섬유와 제지, 철도, 항만과 공항건설등의 사회 기반 시
설에 한국의 투자를 늘리기로 한 양국이 합의일 것이다. 협력 계획의 원활
한 추진을 위해, 김대통령은 파키스탄의 투자 가능성을 타진하기 위한 고위
사절단을 곧 파견하겠다고 부토수상에게 약속하였다.

In tandem with economic progress, the Central and Latin American
countries are establishing regional economic blocs to protect their
interests. Under these circumstances, President Kim, accompanied by
about 40 business leaders, is going to have summits with heads of the
five countries to promote trade and economic partnerships. He will also
hold a summit conference in Guatemala with the leaders of neighboring
nations, including Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and El Salvador.
경제발전에 힘입어, 중남미 국가들은 그들의 이익을 지키기 위해 지역 경

They should know how to organize a full-scale world summit.
Reporter : Are all the diplomats honest people, or are they liars?
Goldstein : “An ambassador is an honest man sent abroad to lie for his country.”
So said Sir Henry Wotton in the 16th century.
Nowadays, of course, the complete diplomat needs just a few more skills.

There are many pending diplomatic issues to be resolved
between Korea and Japan, among which are such sensitive
issues as the fisheries agreement, economic aid, the
lessening of Seoul's *trade deficit with Tokyo, and the
opening of our entertainment industries, to name just a few.
Seoul looks forward to Minister Obuchi's *contributions. The
scheduled summit between President Kim Dae-jung and Japan's
prime minister in October should be the occasion to test his
will and determination for the promotion of mutual
cooperation and collaboration into the 21st century.

The Clinton-Jiang summit meeting on June 27 has made a
milestone in advancement of a peaceful global community by
striking some 47 agreements that touch upon all important
issues of our times such as nuclear proliferation
environmental degradation, international crimes and economic
cooperation, to mention just a few here.
6월 27일의 미-중 정상회담은 우리 시대의 모든 중대한 현안을
다루는 47개 합의사항을 결정함으로써 평화로운 지구 공동체의
발전에 시금석이 되었다. 여기서 몇 가지만 언급하면 핵 확산이나

Hardly has any summit diplomacy been inconsequential in the
history of international relations. If the *summitry involves
the heads of great powers like the United States and China,
the impact on the subsequent development of international
affairs have *invariably been decisive and long lasting.
President Clinton's China engagement, it appears, has made a
small yet significant start which will make a definite
contribution to the closing of this bloody century marred by
chronic wars and conflict and, hopefully, to the opening of a
new millennium for peace and prosperity for us all.

없었다. 정상회담에 미국과 중국과 같은 초강대국들의 지도자들이
참여한 경우 그 결과로 국제관계의 발전에 미치는 영향은
변함없이 결정적이고 장기적으로 지속되어왔다. 클린턴 대통령이
중국문제에 관여하는 것은 만성적인 전쟁과 투쟁에 피로 물든 이
세기를 마감하고, 바라건대 우리 모두의 평화와 번영을 위한
새로운 일 천 년을 개막하는데 결정적인 공헌을 할 작지만 중대한
출발점이 될 것으로 보인다.

지난 2월 하노이 북·미 정상회담을 앞둔 시점까지만 해도 평균 수익률이 9.5%에 달했지만, 이후 회담 무산과 북한 단거리 미사일 발사 등의 변수가 생기면서 현재 연초 이후 수익률은 -5.13%로 돌아선 상태다.
Right before the North Korea-U.S. summit in Hanoi in February, the average return rate reached 9.5%, but the return rate in the early year has now become -5.13% due to variables such as the cancelation of the summit and the launch of short-range missiles by North Korea.

정용택 IBK투자증권 리서치센터장은 "다음주 미·중 정상회담이 열리기 전까지는 시장이 불확실성에 눌려 있기 때문에 주가 상승폭에 한계가 있다"며 "하반기 실제 금리 인하가 이뤄지기 전까지 박스권 장세가 펼쳐질 가능성이 높다"고 분석했다.
Chung Yong-taek, head of the research center at IBK Investment & Securities, said, "Until the U.S.-China summit next week, there is a limit to the rise in stock prices because the market is pressed by uncertainties," adding," It is highly likely that the box pattern will unfold until the actual rate cut takes place in the second half of the year."
