비동기전송방식(ATM. Asynchronous Transfer Mode):일반 전화교환기와
데이터 통신용패킷교환방식을 결합한 새로운 전송방식. ATM은 지난 86년
프랑스텔레콤 산하 국립전기통신연구소가 네트워크나 단말기, 데이터의
종류와 관계없이 모든 종류의 정보를 하나의 통신방식으로 교환하고자 하는
목적으로 개발했다.

스톡옵션(stock option)(주식매수 청구권):회사의 설립과 경영 기술혁신 등에
기여했거나 기여할 능력을 갖춘 임직원에게 자사주식을 싸게 살 수 있는
권리를 주는 제도. 마이크로소프트, 인텔, IBM등 대부분의 정보통신기업들이
이 제도를 시행하고 있다. 국내에서는 1997년4월부터 증권거래법 개정에
따라 이 제도를 도입할 예정이다. 특히 벤처기업을 중심으로 확산될 것으로
보인다. 이는 이런 조건으로 회사밖에서 우수한 인재를 스카우트할 수 있어
고용제도의 유연성 유지에도 도움이 된다. 그동안 법으로 금지되었던
이재도가 최근 일본에서 연내에 허용하기로 방침을 정했다는 보도도 있다.

LAN(Local Area Network):근거리 통신망, 구내통신망. 학교나 회사 공장과
같이 한정된 공간 내에서 교환기를 이용해 정보를 주고받는 네트워트 형태.

인도 전체 software수출액의 절반이상을 차지할 정도로 IT 산업이 집중되어 있는 인도의 Silicon Valley. 인도 중남부 데칸고원 남쪽 지역에 위치한 도시로 28û 안팎의 온화한 날씨로 예로부터 천연적인 휴양지로 알려져 왔으나 지난 91년 정부가 Software Technology Parks (소프트웨어기술단지)를 세우기 시작하면서 급성장을 하기 시작, 2001년 현재 입주업체들이 350개가 넘는 대규모 산업 단지가 조성됐다. 인도 정보통신산업의 mecca로 등장한 Bangalore는 20세기동안 가장 빠르게 성장한 세계 10대 도시의 하나로 손꼽히고 있을 정도로 많은 변화를 겪었다. 1700여 개에 이르는 공과대학에서 IT인력만 매년 6만 여 명씩 배출하고 있는 점이 이같은 Bangalore의 성장에 큰 몫을 한 것으로 전문가들은 보고 있다. 참고로 인도의 IT 전문인력은 미국 Silicon Valley에서 활동중인 2000여 벤처기업 가운데 인도출신 최고경영자가 40%에 이를 정도로 세계 최고의 수준을 자랑하고 있다

``For LG, losing the satellite broadcasting license would be
devastating since it has failed to secure the asynchronous license
for IMT-2000. The whole foundation for its information and
communication business, which LG has identified as its core
competence of the future, would be dismantled as a result,'' the
industry analyst said.
"LG 입장에서는 이미 IMT-2000의 비동기식 사업자 선정에서 탈락했기
때문에 이번 위성 방송 사업자 선정에서까지 패하게 되면 거의 치명적일
것이다. 결과적으로 LG가 미래 핵심 사업으로 인식해온 정보 통신
업계의 전체적인 기반이 와해될 것이다."라고 기업 분석가는 말했다.
