It was a turning point in my life.
It changed my life.

Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.
오늘, 저는 여러분께 제가 살아오면서 겪었던 세 가지 이야기를 해볼까 합니다. 별로 대단한 이야기는 아니구요. 딱 세가지만요.
The first story is about connecting the dots.
먼저, 인생의 전환점에 관한 이야기입니다.

Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college.
물론 제가 대학에 있을 때는 그 순간들이 내 인생의 전환점이라는 것을 알아챌 수 없었습니다.
But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
그러나 10년이 지난 지금에서야 모든 것이 분명하게 보입니다.

Kim's Stance Against Hanchongnyon : 한총련에 대한 김대통령의 대응
President Kim Young-sam has made some unusually critical
statements about militant pro-Pyongyang student activism, equating
the recent violent student demonstrations at Yonsei University to an
urban guerrilla operation. This position of Kim's is expected to mark a
turning point in the government's handling of the radical student
movement, mainly under the control of the hard-line Hanchongnyon or
Korean Federation of University Student Councils.
김영삼대통령은, 최근의 폭력적인 연세대 시위 사태를 도시 게릴라 작전
이라고 부르면서, 친 북한 과격 운동권학생들에 대하여 이례적으로 비난 성
명을 발표하였다. 이러한 김대통령의 입장 표명은, 강경 노선인 한총련, 즉
한국 대학생 총연합의 주도하에 있는 과격 학생운동을 대하는 정부의 태도
가 전환점을 맞이한 것으로 볼 수 있다.

equate : 동일시하다, 같은 것으로 보다

I feel this is a turning point in my career.
나는 이것이 내 일생(직장생활)의 전환점이라고 생각해요.

The first year of my college was terrible for me.
I didn't know how to handle myself.
I had a growing fear that I might flunk out.
The turnaround came one day during my second semester, on a day when my English professor was returning some essay papers to the class.
She held mine up, and I could see all the red marks and comments she had put on it.
I thought, “Oh, what is she going to do? Criticize my work in front of all these other students?”
Instead, she said, “Your grammar and spelling need a lot of work, Arthur, but this is an example of a very well-organized paper.”
Surely she had no idea what she had done for me.
She had blessed me with an affirmation.
She had shown me I could do something.
나의 대학교 1학년 생활은 끔찍했다.
나는 어떻게 해야 할지 몰랐다.
낙제할 거라는 두려움이 점차로 커져갔다.
영어 교수님께서 학생들에게 작문 과제를 돌려주었던 2학년 어느 날, 전환점이 찾아왔다.
교수님께서는 내 과제를 치켜들었고, 나는 교수님께서 표시한 빨간 표시들과 지적 사항들을 볼 수 있었다.
“아, 교수님께서 무엇을 하려는 것일까? 다른 학생들 앞에서 내가 한 과제물을 힐책하려는 것은 아닐까"라는 생각이 들었다.
그 대신, 교수님께서는 "Arthur, 문법과 철자는 많은 노력을 필요로 하지만, 이것은 매우 잘 짜여진 작문의 예이구나."라고 말씀하셨다.
교수님께서 나를 위해 무엇을 했었는지 교수님께서는 분명히 몰랐다.
교수님께서는 긍정을 함으로써 나를 축복해주셨다.
교수님께서는 나에게 나도 뭔가를 할 수 있다는 것을 보여 주셨던 것이다.

김 회장은 "4차 산업혁명 시대는 협력과 네트워크가 경쟁력의 원천"이라며 "가뜩이나 경영자원이 부족한 중소기업 입장에서는 협동조합 육성 조례가 공동으로 생산·구매·판매에 나서고 기술 개발도 제도적으로 촉진하는 전환점이 될 수 있다"고 지적했다.
In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, cooperation and networks are sources of competitiveness, Chairman Kim pointed out, saying, "For small and medium-sized companies that already lack management resources, the ordinance on fostering cooperatives can be a turning point to jointly produce, purchase and sell and systematically promote technology development."

어려운 상황에서도 노력 여하에 따라 전환점이 앞당겨질 수도 있는 것이다.
take a turn for the better’라는 표현이 있다. 「더 나은 방향을 향해
전환하다」라는 식의 이 표현은 「개선되다」라는 의미로 사용된다.
A:Our country's economy is in danger. The value of the currency is
going down.
B:I think the people of your country have been hard-working and thrifty.
A:To tell the truth, not that hard-working and thrifty for the past
few years.
B:Oh, I see. However, facing the situation is vital, I think.
A general consensus which will lead the people is needed.
A:That's right. If we set up a common goal and work together, the
economy will take a turn for the better.
B:There's no never-ending trial.
A:우리나라의 경제가 위험에 처해 있습니다. 화폐의 가치가 떨어지고 있습
니다.
B:당신 나라의 국민들은 근면하고 절약을 해왔잖아요.
A:솔직히 말해서, 지난 몇년 동안은 그렇게 근면하거나 절약을 하지 못했
습니다.
B:오, 그렇군요. 하지만 상황을 직시하는 것은 중요한 것 같습니다. 국민
을 이끌 수 있는 공감을 형성하는게 필요합니다.
A:그렇습니다. 우리가 공통의 목표를 설정하고 함께 노력한다면 경제가 개
선될 겁니다.
B:끝이 없는 시련은 없는거죠.
