「뒤에」를 의미하는 전치사·형용사·부사로서 동의어를 이루지만 서로 바꿔 쓰일 수는 없다. 장소·위치에 관해서 말할 때 after는 움직이는 것의 전후·순서를 나타내는 데에 운동을 표시하는 동사·명사와 함께 쓰인다.

이렇게 쓰이는 경우 어느 것이 앞서고 뒤서는지를 전혀 나타내지 않는다. run after a person은 그 사람 앞에 서려는 노력을 나타낼 뿐이다. 정지 상태의 동사와 함께 쓰이는 경우에도 운동의 전후·순서가 문맥에 의해 나타날 뿐이다. stern은 눈물이나 애원에 조금도 동하지 않는, 비타협적인·신축성 없는·불굴의 굳은 결의를 강조하고, 때로는 접근하기 어려운, 남을 멀리하는 모습·태도·성질을 암시한다. 이를테면 a severe judge는 냉정하고 공명정대하지만, 겉으로 다정하게 보일 수도 있다. 그러나 a stern judge는 온화하거나 관대한 성질을 밖으로 나타내 보이는 따위의 일은 하지 않는다.

austere는 austeros(=dry)에서 왔다. 어원적으로는 돌능금(crab apple)같은 과일에 독특한, 수분과 단맛이 없는 데서 유래된 것이다. 지금도 때로 신맛이 나는 과일이나 포도주에 대해서 쓰이지만, 주로 사람·사람의 습관·생활양식·생활환경·예술작품 따위에 쓰인다.

sure와 certain은 흔히 바꿔 쓸 수 있다. 그러나 sure는 단순하고 일반적인 말로, 의심 또는 주저함이 없는 것을 암시한다. 즉, 다만 주관적인 확신의 상태를 강조할 뿐이다. 한편 certain은 특별한 근거·증거에 의한 확신을 강하게 암시한다. 따라서 certain이 한결 뜻이 강한 말이다.
I am sure(certain) that he is honest./ He is sure(certain) to lose./ I felt for time sure of his innocence; I am now certain of his guilt.
sure와 certain은 이렇게 서술 용법에서 흔히 바뀌어 쓰일 수 있는데, 한정 용법에서 sure는 a sure aim(꼭 맞히는 겨냥)처럼 ‘확실한, 실수 없는’의 뜻이고, certain은 There is no certain cure for his disease.와 The soldier faced certain death.처럼 ‘믿을 수 있는, 피할 수 없는’의 뜻을 나타내기도 한다. 그러나 대개 A certain person phoned.와 He had a certain charm.에서처럼 ‘어떠한, 어떻다고 꼬집어 말할 수 없는’이라는 전혀 다른 뜻으로도 쓰인다.
confident는 특히 어떤 기대에 대한 확신(certainty, sureness)이 견고한 것, 굳은 신념을 강조한다.

positive는 특히 자기의 의견이나 결론이 정확하다는 확고한 신념, 거의 독단적이 될 정도의 신념의 암시한다.

[比較] suspect, surmise, suppose, suspicion
suspect는 경멸적인 뜻을 가진 말로, 충분하지 않은 증거를 가지고서 또는 전혀 증거 없이 ‘(죄가 있다고, 거짓이라고, 가짜라고, 바람직하지 않다고, 흠이 있다고, 나쁘다고) 상상하다’를 의미한다.
They suspected him of cheating at cards, but there was nothing to justify an open accusation./ He suspected that there was sabotage in connection with the fire.
surmise에는 suspect같이 추한 함축된 뜻은 없다. 다만 확실한 또는 강력한 증거도 없이 ‘생각하다, 추측하다’의 뜻이다.
I surmised that you were his son from your striking resemblance to him. suspect는 surmise의 뜻을 나타낼 수도 있지만, 나쁜 뜻을 나타내려고 하지 않는 경우에는, 후자가 모호하지 않으므로 그것을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
suppose는 참이든 아니든 관계없이, 논의를 위해서 또는 결론을 찾아내기 위해서 ‘추측하다, 생각으로 기울다, 관념을 가지다’, 또한 가설적으로 ‘가정하다’는 의미이다.
Do you suppose that she wished to remain unmarried?/ The roads were no better than the old had supposed./ All right, suppose we do give him the money? What will happen then?
suspicion은 ‘의심, 미심, 수상함’의 의미하는 명사지만, 무식한 이들이 흔히 동사로 쓰는 수가 있다. 물론 비표준적 용법이며, 표준용법에서는 suspect를 써야 한다.

[比較] vicious, villainous, iniquitous, nefarious, infamous
vicious는 악덕(vice), 부도덕(immorality)에 빠지거나 관계되는 뜻을 품고, 보통 도덕적인 타락을 암시하며, virtuous(유덕한)의 정반대어이다.
form vicious habits
흔히 이 말은 흉한 것, 사나운 성미나 일부러 하는 잔인한 행위 같은, 특별히 비난받을 성질을 나타낸다.
The horseman delivered one last vicious cut with his whip.(그 말 탄 사람은 마지막으로 채찍을 한 번 후려갈겼다.)
또는 과오, 결점, 고칠 수 없는 상태 등의 가치가 저하되는 것을 가리킨다.
villainous는 vicious보다 비난의 뜻이 강한 말로, villain(악덕배)이 가지고 있는 성질을 암시하기도 하지만, 그저 vicious의 강조어로 쓰인다.

Not a prayer 또는 not a chance라고 줄여 쓰기도 한다.

Beat it! 꺼져 버려!
* beat it 이라고 하면 많이 들어본 말이긴 하지만 알고 보면
생각했었던 거와 전혀 다른 의미를 지니고 있음을 알게 된다.
예를 들면 미국에 이민온 지 얼마 되지 않는 교포 청년이
아파트를 구하러 다니다가 어느 집 앞에서 고약한 개 한 마리와
마주쳤다. 개는 청년을 보고 마구 짖어 댔다. 청년이 개한테
겁을 주기 위해 개를 발길로 차는 시늉을 하니까 개는 뒤로
물러서면서 더 짖어 댔다. 이때 그 집에서 한 노파가 나오더니
'beat it'이라고 소리쳤다. 그런데 교포 청년은 그 말을
'때려라'고 하는 줄 알고 개를 한번 발길로 찼다. 그러나
노파는 미친 듯이 무어라고 소리를 질러 댔고 겁이 난 청년은
삼십육계 줄행랑을 쳤다. 이 교포 청년이 'beat it'을 알아들은
것은 제대로 알아들었다. 그러나 그 뜻을 '개를 때려라'라고
해석한 것은 잘못이었다. 왜냐하면 beat it은 우리말 '저리 가!'의
속된 표현인 '꺼져'에 해당하는 말이기 때문이다.
같은 뜻으로 get lost!, scram, split, buzz off, take a walk등
많이 있다. 그 노파가 'go away' 라고만 말했어도 '저리가!'라는
뜻으로 알았을 테지만 속어인 beat it!이라고 했으니 갓 이민온
그 청년이 알아들을 리 만무했다. beat의 원래 뜻은 '때리다'이지만
'선수를 친다'는 뜻으로도 많이 쓰인다.
You beat me to her.라고 한다면 '네가 그녀한테 나보다 선수를
쳤구나'라는 뜻이 된다. beat는 또 속어로서 tired, '피곤하다'는
뜻으로도 쓰인다. You look beat.는 '너 피곤해 보이는구나'란
말이다. 또 beat me는 I don't know.와 같다.

'액체 상태로 있는'이 아니라 '현금으로 바꿀 수 있는
상태'를 가리키고 take a bath는 '목욕한다'는 말이
아니라 '금전상 큰 손해를 본다'는 뜻의 slang이다.
그리고 take a beating도 '매를 맞는다'는 뜻외에
역시 '금전적으로 큰 손해를 본다' '바가지 썼다'는
뜻으로 자주 쓰인다.
그리고 You got ripped off도 같은 의미이고
You paid through the nose라고 해도 역시
'너 바가지 썼다'란 말이 된다. 이런 말들은 slang이므로
우리 같은 외국인들이 함부로 쓸 것은 아니고
미국인들이 이런 말을 쓸 때 알아듣기만 하면 된다.

You have a fat chance. 넌 가능성이 전혀 없어.
* fat chance는 slim chance와 같은 뜻, 즉 '가능성이
거의 없구나'하는 뜻이다. 그러므로 little chance와
같은 말이다.

'letterman'을 '집배원' 이라고 오해하기 쉬운데 전혀 그렇지 않으니
조심하시기 바랍니다.
여기서의 'letter'는 '글자'라는 뜻으로서 'letterman'은 '글자가 찍
힌 사람' 이란 말입니다.
어떤 사람에게 글자가 찍힐까요?
운동선수들을 보면 'uniform'의 앞뒤로 소속 팀을 나타내는 글자가 붙
