Later on I had to leave the office, and I returned to find my wastebasket
perched on top of my desk. "Why is this here?" I asked the secretary.
"Your sister returned your call," she replied.
사무실에서 언니네 집으로 전화를 했더니 10대인 조카가 그녀가 없다고 했다.
과거 경험을 통해 전화해달라는 말을 전해달라는 것이 소용없다는 것을 알고
있었다. "부탁 한가지 할께," 내가 말했다. "난로 위에 있는 주전자를 커피
테이블에 갖다 놓아라. 너의 어머니가 왜 주전자가 여기 있냐고 물으며 내가
그렇게 시켰다고 말해라. 그러면 네 어머니는 왜 내가 그랬는지 알아보려고
전화를 할거다."
나중에 나는 사무실을 떠날 일이 있었다. 돌아와 보니 휴지통이 내 책상
위에 있었다. "이게 왜 여기 있지?" 비서에게 물었다.
"언니에게서 전화 왔었어요." 비서의 대답이었다.
저희 사장님께서도 이처럼 놀라운 성과를 듣고 매우 기뻐하시며 개인적인 기쁨을
전해달라고 하셨습니다.

◆ individual, private, personal
individual은 각 개인의 독립성, 차이, 개성이 강조되는 단어입니다.
individual taste : 개인적인 취향
We must respect the will of the individual.
--> 개인의 의지를 존중하여야 한다.
private은 '공공의'의 반대 의미를 지닌 단어로, 개인에 속하는(비밀로 해야 하는)이라는 뜻이며, 어감이 다소 어둡습니다.
private affair : 남에게 알리고 싶지 않은 개인적인 일
I couldn't come because of a private matter.
--> 저는 개인 사정 때문에 못 왔어요.
personal은 개인에 관한이라는 뜻이지만 private에 비해 좀 단순합니다.
personal affair : 누구에게나 있는 일신상의 일
