E-commerce, using information technology, is a quickly growing way to do business.
In this approach to business, a company or a person develops a Website on the Internet to sell or buy a product or service.
They advertise their product through links to other sites.
They also develop and use safe ways on the Internet for people to buy things, usually using credit cards.
People anywhere in the world can find the Website and decide if they want to buy the product or service.

Whether it is a business-to-business transaction or a retail sale, e-commerce shifts the balance of power in favor of the customer.
This happens because the Web reduces distances.
Instead of spending hours driving around comparison shopping, a Web shopper can quickly gather information about products and sellers almost anywhere.
Businesses have found that the real distance between producers and consumers has disappeared.
In this new economic situation, the buyer is king.
If one seller cannot deliver a superior product at a competitive price in real time, another seller will.
The realization that any business can directly reach a final consumer is changing the relationships among producers, wholesalers, distributors, retailers, and consumers.

On the surface, e-commerce appears to offer a big environmental bonus by eliminating hundreds of thousands of trips to the shopping mall.
A closer look, however, reveals that e-commerce may not be so friendly to the environment.
On-line book shopping, for example, may reduce energy use by less frequent visits to bookstores, but this actually creates more serious problems.
Every book ordered on the Web is heavily packaged and travels on a transportation network.
Instead of shipping, say, 10 copies of “Harry Potter” in one box to a bookstore, 10 boxes with one copy are shipped to e-commerce customers.
After all, this method requires more plastic bags which take a long time to decay.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Just like their brick-and-mortar competitors, many
online retailers fail to deliver on their promises, according to a
survey of online shopping sites released this week.

Resource Marketing, Inc., a Columbus, Ohio-based technology marketing
and communications firm that works with high-tech clients, said it spent
thousands of hours and thousands of dollars buying goods from 45 Web
sites over the past two years.

U.S. Expects WTO to Extend Ban on Cyberspace Duties

REDMOND, Wash. -- World trade ministers meeting in Seattle beginning
this month likely will agree to keep cyberspace a duty-free zone for at
least another 18 months, a top U.S. official said on Friday.

The moratorium on customs duties, in place since a May 1998 WTO
agreement, applies only to communications, goods and services that are
transmitted electronically including digital books, music and software.
전자상거래 관세부과 유예조치는 지난해 5월 2차 WTO 각료회의에서 채택됐다.
당시 통신 및 디지털 도서, 음악, 소프트웨어를 포함해서 전자적으로 거래가

Because such transactions happen almost invisibly, much like telephone
calls or fax transmissions, Aaron said that any effort to impose and
collect customs duties would be ``enormously intrusive.''
``The duties themselves, and the extraordinary means needed to provide
and police collection would slow the growth of electronic commerce and
could encourage the development of technologies to circumvent the law,''
he said in a speech.

Aaron said it was unlikely that proposal would be approved at the
upcoming ministerial meeting, but he was optimistic an agreement could
be reached before the next WTO ministerial meeting in three years.

And so when they came up with this e-commerce thing, I figured they were

Online shopping rose 11 percent last week, marking the biggest weekly
jump since the beginning of November, according to Nielsen/NetRatings'
electronic commerce survey of shopping during the holiday season.
