The "trial of the century" at the Seoul District Court has entered its
final stage, with the prosecutors demanding the death sentence for
former president Chun Doo-hwan and life imprisonment for Chun's
successor, Roh Tae-woo. Sentences ranging from 10 years to life term
were demanded for the other 14 defendants.
서울 지방법원에서 열린 "세기의 재판"은 검찰이 전두환전대통령에게 사
형을, 그리고 전씨의 후임자인 노태우전대통령에게는 무기징역을 구형함으
로써 막바지 단계에 이르렀다. 나머지 14명의 피고인들에게는 10년 징역에
서 무기징역까지 구형되었다.
Arguments in this trial boil down to whether Chun Doo-hwan and
his collaborators took an extraordinary military action because it was
necessary to probe the assassination of president Park Chung-hee as
the defense claimed, or they engineered the ``coup-like incident'' in
order to gain political power in denial of the constitutional order and in
defiance of the military chain of command. The justifiability of the
suppression of the Kwangju uprising in 1980 depends largely on the
judgment of the Dec. 12, 1979 mutiny.
