미국의 33번째 대통령이었던 Harry Truman의 책상 위애는
The buck stops here.란 표어가 적혀있었다고 한다. 이말을 직역하면
buck은 이곳에서 멈춘다는 말이다. 그런데 이말은 원래 있었던 관용
어구인 Pass the buck.을 변형시켜 만든 표현으로 더 이상의 책임전
가는 없다. 내가 모든 책임을 진다.는 표현이다.
Pass the buck하는 얘기는 poker에서 나온 표현이다. poker에서는
돌아가면서 패를 돌리는데, 패를 돌리는 사람을 dealer라고 부른다.
보통 dealer가 누구인지 확실하게 밝히기 위해서 dealer앞에다가
buck이라고 불리우는 작은 표를 놓게 된다. 그런데 사람들은 dealer
가 되는 것을 별로 달가와하지 않는 편이었는데, 왜냐하면 poker의
dealer는 급한 poker game의 종류를 정해야하고, 패를 돌려야하고,
또 가장 먼저 betting(돈을 거는것)을 해야하기 때문이었다.
바로 여기서 Pass the buck.이란 표현이 나오게 되었는데, 이말은
dealer를 상징하는 표를 넘기다. 다시 말하면 dealer의 책임을 넘기
다라는 뜻이다.
오늘날 Pass the buck.이란 말은 일반적으로 남에게 책임을 전가시
키다, 책임을 회피하다라는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
따라서 이와 정반대의 표현인 The buck stops here.는 스스로 모든
책임을 지겠다는 말이 되는 것이다.

The bright young lad thought he could talk his way out of anything.
그 약은 젊은 남자아이는 말만 잘 하면 무슨 일에서든지 벗어날 수 있다고 생각했다.
Stumped by a tough midyear exam, he wrote this excuse across the cover:

One summer, in almost all store and restaurant windows on the Massachusetts
island of Nantucket, large signs were posted prohibiting the entry of people with bare
feet. There was, however, a noticeable exception. A small shop off the main street
boldly displayed the message "Bare Feet Welcome." The shop : the local sandal maker.

Reading is not only a supplement to experience. Good reading is experience itself.
The author who can write with power and insight and truth can make his perceptions
a part of your awareness of the world around you. Thus the person who deprives himself
of the wisdom and understanding of great writers deprives himself of an invaluable
experience that can be gained in no other way.
독서는 경험의 보충에 불과한 것이 아니다. 좋은 독서는 경험 그 자체다.
힘과 통찰력과 진실을 갖고 쓸 수 있는 저자는 자신이 이해한 것을

A new ad posted in our apartment house by a young boy announced that he would
wash a car for 50 cents. I promptly took advantage of his offer and, knowing that I was
his first customer, gave him an extra quarter for a job well done. Upon passing his sign
about ten minutes later, I was amused to see that it now read: "Car Wash 75 cents -
Experienced."
