이게 된다. 'Show one's teeth'라는 표현은 「이빨을 내보이다」라는 식으로
된 표현인데,「적개심을 내보이다」라는 의미를 가진다.

bury 라는 말은 '묻다, 숨기다'는 뜻이지요. 그리고 hatchet 라는 말은
'손도끼, 특히 북미 인디언들이 사용했던 전투용 도끼' 를 가리키는 말입니다.
그래서 bury the hatchet 이라는 말을 직역하면 '전투용 도끼를 묻다' 라는
표현이 되지요. 이 표현은 오늘날 '싸움을 그만두다, 화해하다' 이런 뜻으로
쓰입니다. 그래서 Let's bury the hatchet. 이라는 말이 '화해 합시다!'
이런 말이 된 것이지요. 이 표현은 북미 인디언들의 풍습으로 유래가 된
것이라고 하지요. 예전에는 북미 인디언들이 The great spirit 이라고 하는
주신을 믿었는데 이 주신은 그들에게 손도끼를 묶고 적개심을 떨쳐 버리라고
가르쳤다고 합니다. 그래서 인디언들은 두 종족간의 싸움을 중단할 때
양 쪽 지도자의 손도끼와 다른 무기들을 땅에다 묻었다고 전해지고 있습니다.
오늘날 이 bury the hatchet 이라고 하는 것은 싸움을 중단하는 것 뿐만
아니라 '한이 맺힌 과거의 일을 용서하다'는 말로도 쓰입니다.
