하고 있다.
카테고리 킬러(Category Killer):넓은 매장에다 전자제품이든 생활용품이든
특정한 종류의 제품들을 대거 갖추고 이를 싼 가격으로 집중판매하는
'품목별 전문할인매장'.
서킷시티(전자제품),토이자러스(완구),오피스맥스(문구,사무용품),F&M(의약품,
생필품),보더(서점)등이 이에 해당된다. 특징으로는 품목은 한두가지
뿐이지만 그 품목내에서는 없는 제품이 없게 다양한 상품구색을 갖추고
대량구매를 통해 저가판매하는 것이다.
Purchasing power라 하면 자동적으로 '구매력'하고 번역
하시지요? 이 말은 우리가 일상생활에서 흔히 접할 수 있을
정도로 일반화된 경제 용어입니다. 구매력이라는 말은 단순하게
생각해 보면 어떠한 물건을 살 수 있는 힘인데, 이렇게만 정의
내려서는 곤란합니다.
원래 '구매력'이라는 말이 의미하는 바는 value of money as
measured by the goods and services it can buy 즉, 구매할 수
있는 재화(goods)와 용역 (services)으로서 측정되어지는 돈의
가치입니다.
쉽게 말해 우리가 신문 등에서 접하게 되는 purchasing power
(때로 purchase power라 하는 경우도 있습니다)의 경우는 dollar,
yen을 비롯하여 원화 가치를 비교할 때인 경우가 많습니다.
물론 일반적으로 우리가 생각하는 구매력 즉, 서민들의 구매력이
떨어졌다, 올라갔다는 식의 용법도 잘못된 것은 아닙니다.

저가 모델, 저가 상품은 영어로 low-price products, low-price
models라 합니다. cheap products도 같은 뜻이기는 하나 cheap을
사용하게 되면 '싸구려'라는 인상을 강하게 주므로 상황에 따라
inexpensive나 low-price, 또는 reasonable과 같은 단어를 적절히
사용할 수 있어야 합니다.
Depreciation은 가치(value)가 떨어지는(go down, decrease)
것이므로 the won's depreciation 또는 depreciation of the
won은 원화의 가치가 떨어지는 것 (절하되는 것)을 의미합니다.
반대로 가치가 상승하는 경우에는 appreciation을 사용한다는
것도 알아 두시기 바랍니다.
1 달러를 사기 위해서 900원만 지불하면 되었던 것이 최근 1400원
정도를 주어야 하므로 똑 같은 제품을 (달러화 기준으로) 사기
위해서는 depreciation이 있기 전 보다 500원을 더 주어야 하므로
원화 값이 헐값이 된 셈입니다.
구매력이 떨어진다는 것은 바로 이와 같이 똑 같은 양의 돈을
가지고 있더라도 환율 변동으로 인해 가치가 절하되면 그 돈으로
수입품이나 수입원자재로 이루어진 물건을 구매하기 위해서는
돈을 그만큼 더 지불해야 되는 것이므로 실질적인 소득 감소의
결과를 갖게 되는 것이고 바로 이러한 경우를 놓고 원화의
구매력이 떨어졌다고 하는 것입니다.
반대로 달러의 경우 한국 시장에서 물건을 사는 데는 구매력이
엄청나게 상승한 것이 되는 셈입니다. 왜냐하면 그 동안 10달러를
주어야 살 수 있던 것도 이제는 약 6달러만 내도 살 수 있게
되었기 때문입니다.
