Is there a recycling machine?
In the United States and in many European countries, there is a serious problem.
What should be done with the garbage?
There is no more room for garbage.
It is not possible to burn garbage, because that pollutes the air.
So the governments are looking for ways to reduce the amount of garbage that is produced.
One way to do this is to recycle as much as possible.
Not all kinds of garbage can be recycled, of course.
The easiest things to recycle are probably glass and paper.
미국과 많은 유럽 국가들에서 심각한 문제가 있다.
쓰레기를 어떻게 해야 할 것인가?
쓰레기를 버릴 더 이상의 공간이 없다.

My coworker Lewis is an environmentalist.
He is up to date on every environmental cause.
He strictly separates his trash, he doesn't use chemicals on his lawn, and he drives a small car to save oil and reduce pollution.
Lewis is not afraid to lecture his peers when he sees them doing something that might harm our environment.
Today Lewis and I met at the copy machine.
I asked Lewis how his paper recycling drive was going.
“Well, you're not participating,” he said.
“Oh, I'm sorry,” I said.
“I should have joined you.”
Then I saw what he was copying: a handwritten note of about three sentences.
He had made dozens of copies.
“Why didn't you make one copy, and then double it up? You could have saved a lot of paper,” I told him.
Lewis smiled weakly.
“Oh, you're right.
Normally I would have, but I'm late for a meeting.”

최근의 모든 환경 운동을 모두 꿰고 있다.
쓰레기를 엄격하게 분리하고, 잔디에 농약을 사용하지 않으며, 기름을 아끼고 오염을 줄이려고 소형차를 몬다.
Lewis는 환경에 해를 끼칠 수 있는 동료의 행위를 목격하면 그를 훈계하는 일을 서슴지 않는다.
오늘 복사기 앞에서 Lewis를 만났다.
나는 그에게 폐휴지 재활용 운동이 어떻게 진행되고 있는지를 물었다.
“원 참, 넌 동참도 안 하고 있잖아,” 하고 그가 대답했다.
“오, 정말 미안해.
나도 동참했어야 했는데,” 하고 내가 말했다.
그 때 그가 복사하는 것을 보았는데, 세 문장 정도를 손으로 쓴 짧은 메모라는 것을 알게 되었다.
그는 수십 장을 복사했다.
“왜 한 장을 복사한 다음, 겹쳐 복사하지 않았니? 종이를 많이 아낄 수 있었을 텐데,” 하고 내가 말했다.
“그래, 네가 맞아.
보통 때라면 그렇게 했겠지만, 지금은 회의에 늦었거든.” 하고 멋쩍게 웃었다.
So the governments are looking for ways to reduce the amount of garbage that is produced.
따라서 정부는 산출되는 쓰레기 양을 줄이는 방안을 모색하고 있다.
One way to do this is to recycle as much as possible.

Not all kinds of garbage can be recycled, of course.

The easiest things to recycle are probably glass and paper.

The new paper, called green-paper, is just as easily made as normal
recycled wood paper, and is much less costly in terms of renewable
resources : it takes about 26 years to grow a mature tree, while
ordinary garden vegetables regenerate annually.
흔히 그린 페이퍼라고 불리는 이 새로운 종이는 보통 재활용되는 나무
종이만큼 쉽게 만들 수 있으며, 자원의 재생 가능성 측면에서 볼 때 비용이

The paper is every bit as flexible as normal paper, and can be made
in any shape and any color.

cameras. Also fix-it shops are getting rare. Why should we repair the old
when we can buy the new? As a result, junk yards are filled with
still-usable items. We don't reuse or recycle, which would save us money.
