Building materials are among the oldest human artifacts, but today's
materials differ appreciably from those used prior to the nineteenth
century. Superbly sculptured buildings of natural stone, built several
thousand years ago, survive to prove that the skill is of very ancient
origin. Even civilizations that lacked metal tools succeeded in working
stone with remarkable precision. These were exceptional even in their
own time, however, the most common building materials in the Ancient
World and in the developing countries until recently being timber (or
bamboo or reeds) and sun-dried bricks. These readily available materials
were, and are, nondurable, but simple buildings using them could, and
can, be erected quickly and cheaply.
건축자재는 가장 오래된 인간의 인공물이지만 오늘날의 자재는 19세기 이전에
사용된 자재와는 상당히 다르다. 수천년전에 자연석으로 화려하게 조각된
건물들은 살아남아 그 기술이 매우 오래되었음을 입증하고 있다. 심지어
금속으로 된 도구가 부족했던 문명조차도 아주 정확하게 돌을 다루는데
성공했었다. 그러나 이러한 것은 그 당시의 시대에서조차도 비범한 것이다.
고대세계와 그리고 최근까지 개발도상국에서 가장 흔한 건축자재는 목재(혹은
대나무 혹은 갈대)와 햇볕에 말린 벽돌이었기 때문이다. 이렇게 쉽게 구할 수
있었던 자재들은 내구적이지 못했고, 지금도 그렇다. 그러나 그러한 자재를
사용하는 단순한 건물들은 신속하게 그리고 싸게 지을 수 있었고 지금도
그렇다.
