라는 뜻이 있던데요. 술 이름 중에서도 'Tom and Jerry' 라
는 말도 있구요.
Tom 이란 이름이 이렇게 좋지 못한 뜻으로 쓰이게 된 그 유
래가 궁금합니다.

'Tom' 은 여러분도 잘 알다시피 우리나라의 '철수'라는
이름처럼 미국의 대표적인 남자 이름입니다. 그러다 보니
이름 자체가 흔하고 부르기 쉬워서 좋지 못한 일에 쉽게,
많이 쓰이게 된 것입니다.
이와 함께 Tom 에게는 부정적인 일화들이 붙을만한 일화
들이 많이 있었죠.
11세기 영국에서 과중한 세금으로부터 주민들을 구하기 위
해서 머시아 백작(Earl of Mercia) 의 아내, Godiva 가 남편
과 내기를 했다고 합니다.
그 내기는 알몸으로 백마를 타고서 마을 거리를 달리면, 아
내가 청한대로 세금을 낮추어 주겠다는 것이었습니다.
그러자 Godiva 는 정말로 요구에 응했는데, 그녀가 말을 타
고서 거리를 달릴 때 창가에서 이것을 엿보던 Tom 이라는 재
단사가 장님이 되어버렸다고 합니다.
여기서 'peeping Tom (여자의 벌거벗은 모습을 염탐하는 사
람)' 이란 말이 유래되엇다고 하지요.
또 다른 일화가 있습니다.
성경에서 Tom (우리말 성경에서는 '도마'로 번역) 은 예수
님의 제자들 중에서 특히 의심이 많아서 에수의 부활을 눈으
로 확인하기 전에는 부활의 사실을 믿지 않으려 햇었죠.
위와같은 여러가지 이유로 Tom 이란 이름의 인물과 연관된
좋지 않은 인상이 사람들의 인식 속에 은연중에 자리잡게 되
엇고, 결국 Tom 이란 이름은 그다지 좋지 못한 일에서 사람
들의 입에 자주 오르내리는 이름이 되어버린 듯합니다.
또 다른 예로 '어중이떠중이,모든 사람'이란 뜻으로
'Tom, Dick and Harry' 라는 말도 있고, 숫고양이를 'Tomcat'
라 부르기도 합니다.
말괄량이,왈가닥은 'Tomboy' 라고 하지요.

" Clear the coast! " 는 "길 비켜!"이고 "The coast is clear." 는
"때는 지금이다." 라고 합니다.
어떤 이유에서 이런 표현이 나왔나요?

서양에서는 일찌기 바다를 통한 활동이 왕성해서 바이킹족이 전유럽
의 해안을 벌벌 떨게 했는가 하면 콜룸부스의 세계 탐험도 이루어졌고
전쟁시에도 해안을 통한 적의 침입이 이루어지기도 했습니다.
그래서 '바다는 세계와 통하는 길'이라는 인식이 깊게 자리잡고 있었
을 것입니다.
위의 두 표현은 그런 맥락에서 상통하고 있지요.
해안을 통해 침입하려고 벼르고 벼르던 적들이 철통같은 수비를 하고
있는 상대를 보고 후퇴해서 돌아가면 해안을 지키던 군사들은 "위험은
사라졌다!" 하고 소리를 지르겠지요.
바로 이 말이 "The coast is clear!" 랍니다.
그런데 이 말은 근대로 넘어오면서 밀수꾼에 의해 더욱 널리 번지게
됩니다.
해안의 경계를 맡던 경찰들이 사라진 후 잽싸게 물건을 들여오면서 하
는 말인즉, " 이 때다! " 했던 것이죠.
그리고 'clear'는 동사로 쓰여서 '깨끗이 없애다,치워버리다' 의 뜻이
므로 " Clear the coast. " 는 "길을 비켜라." 는 의미도 되지요.

South Korean President Kim Dae-jung won this year's Nobel Peace Prize Friday.
김대중 대통령이 올해 노벨 평화상 수상자로 선정됐다.
Kim became the first Korean to receive the coveted Nobel Prize.
한국인으로 노벨상을 받는 것은 김 대통령이 처음이다.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Kim was chosen as the
Nobel Prize awardee for his ``work for democracy and human rights
in South Korea and in East Asia in general, and for peace and
reconciliation with North Korea in particular.''
노르웨이 노벨상 위원회는 13일 김 대통령이 북한과의 한반도 평화와
화해를 이뤄내고 한국과 아시아의 민주주의와 인권 상황을 개선한
공로로 올해 노벨 평화상 수상자로 선정됐다고 밝혔다.
``Through his 'sunshine policy', Kim Dae-jung has attempted to
overcome more than 50 years of war and hostility between North
and South Korea,'' the committee said.
노벨상 위원회는 “김 대통령은 일관된 `햇볕정책'으로 50년 이상
지속된 남북한의 전쟁과 적대관계를 해소하기 위해서 힘써왔다"며

The committee, apparently conscious of North Korean leader
Kim Jong-il, said it wanted to ``express recognition of the
contributions made by North Korea's and other countries'
leaders to advance reconciliation and possible reunification.''
``Kim also showed considerable commitment in favor of democracy
in Burman and against repression in East Timor.''

Kim won the prize from 115 individual and 35 organization nominees,
braving the hottest ever competition since 1901, when the Nobel
Peace Prize was established.
In his run-up to the Nobel award, Kim beat U.S. President Bill Clinton,
who had bridged the now crumbling Middle East peace process,
former Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomirdin and the Salvation Army.

Kim was first nominated for the prize in 1987 by lawmakers in
the United States and Germany and foreign professors who
sympathized with his democracy struggle.
Since then, he has been nominated every year - a total of 14 occasions.

외국 교수들이 처음으로 평화상 후보로 추천한 뒤 지금까지 계속해서
모두 14차례나 후보에 올랐었다.
The 2000 award ceremony will be held in Oslo on Dec. 10.
But Kim will actually receive his prize in Stockholm, Sweden,
with the awardees of literature, medicine, physics, chemistry and economics.
김 대통령에 대한 노벨 평화상 수상식은 오는 12월10일 노르웨이 오슬로에서 열리며,
문학·의학·물리·화학·경제 등 나머지 노벨상 수상자들과 함께
스웨덴 스톡홀름에서 상을 받게 된다.
The award comprises a gold medal, a diploma and a check for 9 million
Swedish crowns (1 billion won) and Kim must give a lecture
on his achievement within the next six months.
