깜짝깜짝 놀라고 불면증에 시달린다. 불안과 우울증도 잘 연관되나 자살관념은 흔하지 않다. 증상의
시작은 외상후 수 주 및 수 개월의 잠복기를 가지며 과정은 유동적이나 다수가 회복된다. 환자의
일부는 수년간의 만성적 경과를 밟으며 인격변조 (F62.0)의 과도기를 거친다.

은퇴, 부모가 되는것 등의 주요한 변화나 분기일 수 있다. 개개인의 성향과 취향에 따라 적응장애의
발현모습과 위험도가 달라지며 스트레스성 요인 없이 이런 증상이 나타날 수도 있다. 증상은 다양하
나 우울한 기분, 불안, 걱정(혹은 혼합형), 일상생활의 수행 불가능, 현재의 상황에 대처할 수 있는
능력의 상실, 미래를 계획할 수 있는 능력의 상실로 대표될 수 있다. 성인에 있어 행위장애가 연관
될 수 있다. 우세한 표현 양상은 짧은, 혹은 지속적 우울반응이며 정서나 행위 장애이다.
