대통령직을 사퇴한 Nixon은 후임자인 Ford 대통령이 자기를
사면해 주기를 기다리고 있었는데 전화로 사면이 언제 돠냐고
물었을 때 전화상태가 좋지 않아 Ford대통령이
I beg your pardon?이라고 말하자 Nixon은
No, the other way around. I beg your pardon!이라고 말했다.
물론 joke인데 Ford가 말이 잘 안 들려서 I beg your pardon이라고
한 것인데 Nixon은 이 말을 글자 그대로 해석해서
'아니 그 정반대요. 내가 당신의 사면을 간청하고 있소!'라고
말한 것이 되었다.
'사면'을 pardon이라고 하기 때문에 이런 joke가 가능한 것이다.

The politician was accused of exploiting the fears of the public to gain support for his campaign.
그 정치인은 선거운동을 위해 대중의 불안을 이용했다는 비난을 받았다.

The unreported money included 20 million won for the operation
of his election campaign team and 130 million won for volunteers,
Rep. Lee's former campaigner, Kim Yu-chan, claimed.
이번 사건을 폭로한 사람은 이명박의원의 선거운동원으로 활동했던
김유찬씨로 김씨는 "누락액 중에는 선거운동팀 활동비 2천만원, 자원
봉사자 활동비용 1억3천만원이 포함돼 있다"고 주장했다.

A local newspaper said it contacted some of Rep. Lee's campaign
volunteers and confirmed that they received money from him. That
is an illegal campaign practice.
한 일간지에서는 "李의원의 선거운동 자원봉사자 몇명을 취재한 결
과 그들이 비용을 받았음을 확인했다"고 보도했다. 자원봉사자에게 선
거비용을 지급하는 행위는 불법이다.

Prosecutors at the Seoul District Prosecutor's Office said they
found that the second-term lawmaker had spent some 100 million
won more than the legally-allowed amount for his election bid
during interrogation into some 60 members of Lee's campaign staff
and examination of bankbooks of some of these staff members.
서울지검측은 "이의원의 선거운동원 60명에 대한 조사와 이들의 예금
계좌 추적 결과, 이의원이 법정 비용을 초과한 1억여원을 선거비용으

overseas flight during the interrogation of Lee's staff members,
including Lee Kwang-chol, 37, who served as accounting officer
for the businessman-turned-politician during the election
campaign.

등 선거운동원들에 대한 조사를 통해 이의원이 김씨의 해외도피에 개
입했다는 사실을 확인했다고 밝혔다.

Reforms for Clean Elections : 깨끗한 선거를 위한 개혁
To the surprise of political circles and the general public, the Central
Election Management Committee filed complaints Friday against 20
lawmakers who are suspected of having spent more than they were
allowed to or of having offered gifts to voters while campaigning in the
April 11 general elections. This is the first time that the election
watchdog has initiated legal action against such a large number of
incumbent lawmakers.
중앙선거관리위원회가, 지난 4월 11일 총선에서 선거운동기간동안에 허용
된 비용을 초과했거나 유권자에게 금품을 제공한 혐의로, 20명의 국회의원

Using the opportunity provided by the disclosure of the
controversial illegal campaigning, the Assembly needs to review
unreasonable and unrealistic clauses in the election law. Particularly
suspect is the freedom given to incumbent lawmakers in the pre-election
campaign period to publish reports on their Assembly activities in the
electorate, a privilege not enjoyed by other candidates.

The other controversy is over the non-inclusion of ``funds given
candidates by political parties for party activities'' in official campaign
spending, whose ceiling is set by the election law _ to the disfavor of
independents. Yet, rewriting the law alone will not help much. We hope
the CEMC action has raised the politicians' respect for and fear of the
law.
다른 쟁점은, 선거법에서 한도가 정해진 공식적인 선거운동자금에 "정치
활동을 위해 정당에서 주는 자금"을, 포함시키지 않은 조항인데, 무소속 후
보들에게 불리한 불평등이 되고 있다. 그러나, 선거법을 개정한다고 많은 문

* 'fat cat' 은 무엇인가?
-> '정치자금을 바치는 부자;지위가 높고 세력있는 사람;유명인'
의 의미로서 특히 선거운동시에 많은 자금을 기부한 사람을 나타
내는 표현. 이는 또한 자신의 노력에 의한 것보다 착취나 뒷거래
등을 통해 재산을 모았음에도 불구하고 자신을 과시하며 살아가
는 독선적인 특권 부유층의 사람들을 비꼬아 표현하는 것이다.
특히 fat cat은 정치인이나 사업가를 가리킨다.
이것은 제1차 세계대전시 큰 돈을 벌어 부자가 된 사람을 가리켜
사용된데서 유래한다.
