≫ " Prince of Wales "가 영국의 황태자 라고 하는데....유래는 ?
→ 역사적인 배경이 있습니다. 오늘날 우리가 영국이라고 부르는
브리튼섬은 잉글랜드,스코틀렌드,웨일스의 3개로 구성되었죠 ?
옛날에는 각각 독립된 나라였고 그중에서도 잉글랜드의 서쪽에 위
치한 Wales는 13C 후반 까지는 독립을 유지하면서 그 왕을 "Pri
-nce of Wales"라고 불렀고 1282年에 잉글랜드 애드워드Ⅰ세에게
패해서 Wales왕국은 바람과 함께 사라졌던 것이죠. 이 전쟁중에
애드워드Ⅰ세의 차남이 북웨일스의 "카나폰 성"에서 태어났는데
그 직후에 형의 죽음으로 인해서 황태자가 되게 되었습니다.
이어서 애드워드Ⅰ세로 부터 "Prince of Wales "라는 칭호를 부여
받게 된것이 오늘날까지 같은 칭호로 내려온 것입니다.

이라고 합니다.
예를 들어 통 공부를 않던 'Tom'이 오늘은 공부를 하고 있는 보고
"아니, 'Tom'이 공부를 다 하다니 내일은 해가 서쪽에서 뜨겠네."
라고 하려면 "Tom is studying today.Now I've seen everything!"
이라고 합니다.
또 좀처럼 가능성이 없는 일을 표현할 때는 "If monkeys fly." 또
는 "If pigs fly."라는 말을 씁니다.
예를 들어 " 'Tom'이 공부를 한다고? 결코 그런 일은 없을거야."
라고 말하려면 "If monkeys(pigs) fly, Tom will study." 라고 하면
됩니다.
원숭이나 돼지가 날으는 일은 없을테니까 이런 표현을 하는 것이지요.

The earliest American folk art portraits come, not surprisingly, from

Before the 1500's, the western plains of North America were dominated by
farmers. One group, the Mandans, lived in the upper Missouri River

Reprieve for Puerto Rico. Hurricane Debby passing to the north
of the islands. Also good news for the Dominican republic
which lies immediately to the west of Puerto Rico. Here's

The center is very close to the large islands like Puerto Rico
and Hezbanella that blocks off the inflow from the south and
the Caribbean. And they have a hard time strengthening and
in fact they often even, uh, weakened somewhat. In this case
as seen looks to us like it's gonna stay far enough off, uh,
these, uh, to the north of these islands and we sure do
indeed see some strengthening. With 75-mile-an-hour winds,
Debby apparently caused little damage on Antigua and other
small islands in the Caribbean.
