A truly scientific social science will seek to understand the processes of social and individual interaction―the nature and dynamics of social relations―so it can reach a more valid prediction and control of social phenomena and, at the same time, conserve the dignity and integrity of individual personality.

While the Census Bureau and the United States government used the term
SMSA (by 1969 there were 233 of them), social scientists were also using
new terms to describe the elusive, vaguely defined areas reaching out
from what used to be simple "towns" and "cities" . A host of terms came
into use : "metropolitan regions," "polynucleated population groups,"
"conurbations," "metropolitan clusters," "megalopolises," and so on.
인구조사국과 미국정부가 SMSA 라는 용어를 사용하는 한편, 사회과학자들은
과거에 단순히 "towns" 와 "cities" 였던 것들로부터 벗어나는 이해하기
힘들고 애매한 지역들을 묘사하기 위해서 새로운 용어들을 사용했는데, 즉

"conurbations," "metropolitan clusters," "megalopolises," 등등이다.
