용어들은 공학적이나 경제적인 것보다는 오히려 사회학적 의미를 내포하고 있다.
이러한 모든 일반적인 용어들은 매우 직설적이고 질적인 방법에 단지 유용하게
사용되어 질 수 있도록 해야 한다. 이러한 것들이 양으로 표시될 때, 그것들이

다람쥐가 쳇바퀴를 돌고 있는 모습을 들여다보고 있으면 목적이 무엇인지
궁금해진다. 발이 닳도록 달려보지만 늘 제자리에 돌아와 있는 데도 다시
쉴사이 없이 발을 놀려댄다. 'getting nowhere'라는 표현이 있다. 「아무 곳
에도 당도하지 못하다」라는 이 말은 「아무 소용이 없다」는 뜻을 가진다.
Husband:I'm extremely tired, but I can't fall a asleep.
Wife:Why don't you do some exercise?
Husband:I'm too tired. Honey, you're so determined. You've been riding
the stationary bike for over 30 minutes.
Wife:Does the squeaking sound of the bike bother you?
Husband:Well…?
Wife:I'm gaining weight these days. I'm afraid I'm getting nowhere by
riding a bike.
Husband:Well, I think you're going too far tonight. Please come back.

아내:요즈음에 제 몸무게가 늘고 있어요. 자전거 타는 게 아무 소용이 없나봐요.
남편:오늘 밤에는 너무 멀리까지 가는 것 같구려. 이제는 돌아오구려.
