steal은 가장 일반적인 말로 특히「남몰래 훔치다」를 의미한다.

또한 살그머니 하는 짓·남 모르게 하는 짓의 뜻이 강하게 들어 있고, 나쁜 짓을 한다는 뜻이 약하게 되는 수도 있으며, 때로는 아주 없어지는 수도 있다.

purloin은 본래 멀리 옮기다. 한편에 두다(remove far off, set to one side)를 의미했을 뿐이지만, 도둑질과 관련하여 슬쩍 빼돌리는 것이 강하게 든「도둑질하다, 훔치다」의 뜻으로, 지금은 문어로 쓰인다.

pilfer는 작은 분량을 또는 사소한 물건을 훔치는 것, 즉「좀도둑질하다」또는 때로 steal이 너무 가혹스럽게 들릴 때에 완곡어로 쓰이며 고, steal은 도둑당한 물건을 목적어로 삼아, He stole money from a friend.처럼 쓴다. 전자는 사람에 중점이 있고, 후자는 물건에 관심을 둔 표현이다.
hold up은 미국에서 흉기를 가지고 통행인의 길을 막고 강탈하는 것을 말한다. 이런 범인을 a hold-up man이라고 하는데, robber가 금품을 빼앗는데 비해, 이것은 금전을 빼앗는데 흔히 쓰인다. 그러나 이 구별은 확립된 것은 아니다.
