미국 소아과 의료협회(APMA)의 한 연구에 따르면, 18세 이상 미국인의 77%는 발에 통증을 경험하는데, 그 가운데 2백만 명이 발바닥 근막염으로 고통을 받는다.

국소적이거나 전이된 통증이나 증상을 나타내는 근막 발통점.
cellulitis (봉와염, 봉와직염) 근막이나 세포 조직강, 특히 피하 조직을 따라 퍼져나가는 미만
성의 염증 과정. 현저한 화농 현상 없이 근막면을 따라서, 조직 공간을 통해 퍼져나가는 확
산적 염증 과정. 심부피하조직이나 가끔 근육의 급성 광범성, 확산성, 수종성, 화농성의 염증
으로 농양형성을 동반하기도 한다. 여러 종류의 박테리아에 의하여 수술 또는 외상부의, 화
상, 기타 피부병소에 감염되어 초래되며, 주로 A군 streptococci 및 Staphylococcus aureus
가 가장 흔한 원인균이다. 이것은 면역기능이 저하된 사람이나 단독 환자에게도 발생된다.
이 질환은 조직 사이로 확산되어 박테리아가 생성하는 많은 양의 하이알루로니데이스가 다
당기질을 분해하고, 섬유소 용해소는 섬유소 장벽을 용해시키고, 레시티네이스는 세포막을
파괴함으로써 결과적으로 조직면을 서로 분할시킨다. 임상증상으로는 경계가 불분명한 수종,
온열감 및 동통 등이 나타난다.
fibromatosis (섬유종증, 섬유증) 깊게 있는 근막에서 발생하는 섬유성 종양 모양의 결절 형
성으로 국소 재발의 경향이 있다.
latent myofascial trigger point (잠재성 근막 발통점) 촉진에 의해 통증이 나타나는 것을 포
함하여 활동성 근막 발통점의 모든 특성을 가지지만 자발성의 임상적 통증이나 증상의 원인
이되지는 않는 근막 발통점.

myofascial trigger point (근막 발통점) 보통 골격근의 단단한 띠나 근막내에 있는 과민한
점으로서 압박을 받으면 통증이 있으며, 특징적인 전이통 (referred pain), 민감성 (속발성
통각과민), 그리고 자율신경 효과가 나타난다. 활동성 (active)과 잠재성 (latent)으로 분류한
다.
