Ｑ： Doorknocker syndrome이 자신의 사회적 신분이
중류층이라고 믿는 사람들이 많아지는 형상이라는데
왜 그런가요?
Ａ： 신드롬에는 두 가지 현상이 있습니다.
병리학적인 신드롬과 사회학적인 신드롬이 그것인데요.
스스로를 중류층이라고 믿는 사람들이 많아 지는 사회적
현상을 Doorknocker syndrome, 우리 말로 하면 '중류의식 증후군'
이라고 합니다.
Doorknocker는 문에 달린 쇠장식 같은 것을 말하는 것인데요.
방문객의 내방을 알리는 용도로 쓰이는 이 쇠장식이 달린
집에 살려면 어느 정도 경제 능력이 있어야 되겠죠.
그런 이유로 영국에서는 Doorknocker이 붙어있는 집에
산다는 것이 중류계층의 상징으로 여겨왔습니다.
풍요의 시대라는 요즘에는 노동계층에서도 이 Doorknocker이
달린 집에 사는 사람들이 많아 졌구요. 스스로를 중산층이라고
여기는 사회 풍조가 두드러지게 되었죠.
아뭏든 Doorknocker Syndrome이란 말은 중류층을 문에 다는
쇠장식에 비유한 재미있는 신조어입니다.

For these same reasons, the average American would be surprised if a seated passenger offered to hold her bag while she was standing.
According to our American standards, we'd have to politely refuse such an offer, believing that it would unfairly inconvenience the sitter,
that it was meant as a polite gesture, and not a genuine offer.
Another point to consider is that Americans who live in big cities have keen senses of suspicion about other people.
같은 이유로 보통 미국인이 자리에 앉은 승객이 서 있는 자신에게 가방을 들어주겠다고 제안한다면 놀랄 것이다.
우리 미국인의 기준에서 보면, 그런 제안은 정중하게 거절해야 할 것이다.
그런 일은 자리에 앉아 있는 사람에게 부당하게 불편을 끼칠 것이며,
그런 것은 예의상 하는 행동이지 진심에서 우러난 제안은 아니라고 생각하게 때문이다.
또 고려해야할 점은 대도시에 사는 미국인들은 다른 사람에 대해서 상당히 강한 의심을 품고 있다는 것이다.

Southwest many years ago.

Then, alas, with pathetic ignorance of human psychology, it has proceeded by some educational scheme to bind humanity afresh with inert ideas of its own fashioning.
그런데 슬프게도 인간은 인간 심리의 가련한 무지로 인한 어떤 교육계획으로 그 인간 스스로가 만들어 놓은 불활성 사상에 또 다시 인류를 새로이 얽어매는 과정을 밟아 왔다.

many people oppose making euthanasia legal for several reasons.
많은 사람들이 안락사를 합법적으로 만드는 것을 몇 가지 이유로 반대하고 있다.

The person requesting to die might just be going through a temporary phase and might later change his or her mind.
